• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

As she cements her place among Britain’s finest athletes, her story serves as an inspiration to aspiring tennis players worldwide.

Early Life and Introduction to Tennis

Born on October 28, 2001, in London, England, Sonay Kartal developed a passion for tennis at a young age.

Raised in Brighton, she was introduced to the sport at just six years old.

Unlike many children who play for fun, Kartal showed exceptional promise from the outset.

Who Is Sonay Kartal?

Her natural talent, combined with hard work and determination, quickly set her apart.

Kartal trained at the Pavilion & Avenue Tennis Club, where she honed her technical abilities and tactical awareness under the guidance of experienced coaches.

From an early age, she demonstrated a remarkable work ethic, spending hours perfecting her strokes and improving her fitness.

This dedication laid the foundation for her future success.

However, her path to professional tennis was not without obstacles.

Like many young athletes, Kartal faced challenges, including injuries that temporarily halted her progress.

Wrist and back injuries in her teenage years forced her to miss key tournaments, delaying her transition to the professional circuit.

Yet, she refused to let setbacks define her. Instead, she used the time to recover, refine her game, and return stronger.

Dominance in Junior and ITF Tournaments

Before making her mark on the WTA Tour, Kartal gained valuable experience on the junior and ITF circuits.

She competed in several high-profile junior tournaments, showcasing her ability against top-ranked peers.

While she did not have a breakout moment as a junior, she steadily built a reputation as a formidable competitor.

Her transition to the ITF circuit marked the beginning of her professional journey.

Competing in lower-tier tournaments, Kartal worked tirelessly to improve her ranking.

She captured multiple ITF singles titles, proving that she had the skills and mindset to compete at a high level.

Who Is Sonay Kartal?

By the end of 2022, she had made significant strides, gaining recognition within the British tennis community.

Her aggressive playing style, characterized by powerful groundstrokes, quick movement, and intelligent shot selection, made her a tough opponent.

She possessed the ability to dictate play from the baseline while maintaining excellent defensive skills, qualities essential for success at higher levels.

Breakthrough on the WTA Tour

Kartal’s breakthrough moment came in 2024 when she won her first WTA Tour title at the Jasmin Open in Tunisia.

This victory was a defining moment in her career, proving that she could compete, and win, at the highest level.

She defeated Rebecca Šramková in the final, showcasing remarkable composure under pressure.

Winning this title propelled her into the top 100 for the first time, a significant milestone for any professional tennis player.

More importantly, it signaled her arrival on the global stage.

Following her WTA victory, she continued to build momentum, earning wild cards into prestigious tournaments.

With each match, she gained experience, learning how to handle the intensity of WTA-level competition.

Stunning Performance at Indian Wells

The start of 2025 saw Kartal take another giant leap in her career.

At the Indian Wells Open, one of the most prestigious tournaments outside the Grand Slams, she entered the draw as a lucky loser.

What followed was a series of remarkable performances that captured the attention of the global tennis community.

Who Is Sonay Kartal?

Kartal shocked the tennis world by defeating world No. 17 Beatriz Haddad Maia in a thrilling encounter.

This upset proved that she was capable of competing with the best.

Her incredible run at Indian Wells pushed her deeper into the tournament, eventually reaching the round of 16.

This achievement further boosted her ranking and established her as one of Britain’s top female tennis players.

Her next match, against world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, was highly anticipated.

Regardless of the outcome, the experience of competing against the best in the world provided Kartal with invaluable lessons.

It was clear that she was no longer just an emerging talent, she was a serious contender on the WTA circuit.

Playing Style and Strengths

Sonay Kartal’s playing style is a blend of power, precision, and speed. She thrives on aggressive baseline play, using deep, penetrating groundstrokes to control rallies.

Her forehand is a major weapon, allowing her to dictate points and apply pressure on opponents.

Her movement around the court is another key strength.

Kartal possesses exceptional footwork, enabling her to retrieve difficult shots and transition seamlessly between offense and defense.

This ability makes her a versatile player capable of adapting to different playing conditions.

Mentally, she exhibits a level of composure that is rare for a young player.

Her ability to stay focused, handle pressure, and fight through adversity has been instrumental in her rapid rise.

Many have drawn comparisons between Kartal and past British greats such as Johanna Konta and even Emma Raducanu.

Who Is Sonay Kartal?

However, she is forging her own path, developing a unique playing style that makes her a formidable competitor.

The Future of British Tennis

With her rapid ascent, Sonay Kartal is widely regarded as one of the most promising British tennis players of her generation.

Her rise comes at a crucial time, as British tennis seeks its next female star following Emma Raducanu’s historic US Open victory in 2021.

Kartal’s potential is undeniable. If she continues her upward trajectory, she could break into the top 50 and even challenge for Grand Slam titles in the coming years.

With the right support, training, and strategic planning, she has the tools to become a dominant force on the WTA Tour.

Moreover, her success is inspiring young British players, demonstrating that hard work and perseverance can lead to success.

As she continues to grow, she has the potential to become a role model for the next generation of tennis stars.
