• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

It reinforces the sport’s role as a unifying force in Nigeria and beyond.

A Tournament of Prestige and Global Recognition

Held annually in the oil-rich city of Port Harcourt, it serves as a magnet for top-tier players from Argentina, England, South Africa, and Nigeria.

The presence of world-class professionals elevates the level of play, making each match a thrilling spectacle that captivates both seasoned polo fans and newcomers to the sport.

This international participation not only enhances the tournament’s competitive edge but also strengthens Port Harcourt’s position as a global polo hub.

The tournament provides local players with the opportunity to test their skills against some of the best in the world.

This helps fosters talent development within Nigeria’s polo community.

The High-Stakes Competition and Coveted Trophies

At the heart of the Port Harcourt Polo Tournament is the fierce competition for some of the sport’s most prestigious trophies.

The 2025 edition saw teams battling for:

TY Danjuma Cup – A symbol of excellence in Nigerian polo.

Alfred Diette Spiff Cup – Honoring one of Nigeria’s notable statesmen.

TJT Princewill Cup – Representing royal heritage and polo’s elite status.

Governor’s Cup – The ultimate prize, often featuring the most intense matchups.

Each of these trophies carries a legacy, making their pursuit not just about victory but about etching one’s name in the history of Nigerian polo.

The adrenaline-pumping matches, combined with the elegant displays of horsemanship and strategy, create an atmosphere of excitement and prestige.

“Unity in Motion”: A Theme That Resonates Beyond Polo

The theme of the 2025 tournament, “Unity in Motion,” is particularly significant in a country as diverse as Nigeria.

Sports have long been a powerful tool for national cohesion, and this tournament stands as a testament to polo’s ability to bridge cultural and social divides.

The event brought together individuals from different ethnic backgrounds, business sectors, and social classes, all united by their shared passion for polo.

Beyond the matches, the tournament featured networking events, charity initiatives, and social gatherings that reinforced the spirit of unity and collaboration.

The Economic and Tourism Impact of the Tournament

The Port Harcourt Polo Tournament is not just a sporting event—it is a major economic driver for the city and the region.

The influx of tourists, players, and international guests translates into increased revenue for hotels, restaurants, and local businesses.

Luxury brands and corporate sponsors eagerly associate themselves with the tournament, recognizing its elite audience and marketing potential.

Additionally, the event provides employment opportunities, from hospitality services to event planning and security.

Polo tourism in Nigeria is on the rise, and this tournament plays a crucial role in positioning the country as a prime destination for equestrian sports.

A Social and Elite Networking Platform

Polo has always been associated with royalty, high society, and influential business leaders.

The Port Harcourt Polo Tournament serves as a premier networking platform, attracting government officials, industry magnates, and celebrities.

The event’s exclusive VIP lounges, after-parties, and corporate receptions create an environment where business and leisure seamlessly blend.

For many attendees, the tournament is as much about forging business connections as it is about enjoying world-class polo.

The presence of high-net-worth individuals makes it a prime setting for discussions on investments, partnerships, and philanthropy.

Cultural and Historical Significance of Polo in Nigeria

Polo in Nigeria has a rich history, dating back to the colonial era when it was introduced by the British.

Over the decades, it has evolved into a deeply rooted tradition, particularly in the northern regions of the country, where it is closely associated with the aristocracy and military elites.

The Port Harcourt Polo Tournament continues this legacy while also expanding the sport’s reach to newer audiences.

By hosting an event of this magnitude, the tournament organizers are not only preserving Nigeria’s polo heritage.

They are also ensuring that the sport remains relevant for future generations.

A Future of Growth and Excellence

Looking ahead, the Port Harcourt International Polo Tournament is poised for even greater expansion.

The increasing level of competition, growing international recognition, and corporate sponsorships indicate that the event will continue to be a key highlight in Nigeria’s sporting calendar.

The tournament’s success also underscores the need for more investment in equestrian sports infrastructure, training programs for young polo players, and initiatives that make polo more accessible to a wider audience.

Also, with the right support, Nigeria has the potential to become a dominant force in African polo and a key player on the global stage.

In conclusion, Port Harcourt Polo Tournament 2025: Unity in Motion Through Sport was more than just a gathering of skilled players and elegant horses—it was a powerful symbol of unity, progress, and excellence.

From the high-stakes competition to the cultural and economic impact, the event showcased the very best of what Nigerian polo has to offer.

As the tournament continues to grow, its legacy will extend far beyond the polo field, influencing sports development, business networking, and national unity.

In a world where division is often highlighted, this event is a reminder that sport has the power to bring people together.

The game of Polo helps create lasting memories and meaningful connections.
