• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Using technology to elevate community engagement has become a vital strategy for building stronger, more inclusive societies.

Technology has transformed our world in countless way, making our lives easier and more connected than ever before. With the click of a button, we can assess information, connect with loved ones, and even order groceries.

But beyond personal convenience, technology also has the power to enhance community engagement. In today’s fast-paced and ever-changing society, utilizing technology can be the key to strengthening our communities.

One of the most significant ways technologies can enhance community engagement is through social media platforms. These digital spaces provide the opportunity for the people to connect and communicate with those around them.

From neighbourhood Facebook groups to community forums on Reddit, social media allows us to share information, discuss important issues and organize local events. These platforms have the power to bring together individuals who otherwise may never have interacted in real life. This help create a sense of unity and belonging within our communities.

Moreover, social media can also serve as a platform for community organization and local businesses to reach a broader audience. With the use of targeted advertisements and sponsored posts, these groups can reach individuals. Individuals who may not have been aware of their services or events.

This not only increases their reach but also encourage community members to get involved and support these organizations. Thereby strengthening the entire community.

In addition to social media, technology offers various tools and resources that can promote community engagements.

For instance, mobile applications can be used to report and track issues in the neighbourhood. This allows community members to take an active role in improving their surroundings and create a sense of ownership and pride in their community.

Another essential aspect of community engagement is education and awareness.

With the advent of online learning platform, individuals can assess a vast array of educational resources. Resources that are tailored to their interests and needs. This include courses on civic engagement, environmental issues, and other topics that are important for building strong communities.

Furthermore, technology helps provide access to virtual conferences, workshops, and seminars, allowing people to connect and learn form experts. It also helps to learn from fellow community members from all over the world.

Also, technology an integral role in promoting transparency and accountability within our communities. The rise of live streaming and video conferencing has made it easier for individuals to attend public meetings and also easy to hear directly from local leaders.

This increased access to information and communication fosters a sense of trust and understanding between community members and their elected officials. It also holds them accountable for their actions and decisions. This helps promote a more responsible and responsive government.

Some may argue that relying too much heavily on technology for community engagement can lead to a sense of disconnection and detachment from reality.  However, when used correctly, technology can complement and enhance face-to-face interaction, rather than replace them.

For example, online fundraising and crowdfunding platforms allow community members to support local initiatives and causes, even if they cannot attend in-person events. This inclusivity makes it easier for individuals to participate, regardless of their physical limitations or busy schedules.

Furthermore, technology has also made it easier for businesses and organizations within the community to organize and promote events. With the use of event management software, the process of planning and executing events has become easier.

These platforms allow for easy event registration, ticket sales and communication with attendees. By using event management software, businesses can reach a wider audience and attract more participants. All these help in increasing community engagement.

Apart from social media, online forums and event management software, technology has also made it possible for organizations to conduct surveys and polls. This will help gather feedback from community members and help keep abreast of events happening within the community.

Online surveys are easier to create and distribute, making it more convenient for community members to participate. They also provide real-time results, which allows for quick analysis and action.

Critics may also argue that technology can create a digital divide. Leaving behind those who do not have access to the necessary tools and resources. While this is a valid concern, it is essential to note that technological advancements have made devices more affordable and accessible than ever before.

Additionally, community organizations and local governments can work together to provide resources and support for those who may not have access to technology. By doing so, we can bridge the digital divide and ensure that everyone can benefit from the positive impact of technology on community engagement.

It is crucial to acknowledge that technology is not a magic solution for all community engagement issues. It is a tool that, when used thoughtfully and strategically, can bring numerous benefits to our communities. However, it is still up to us, as community members to take the initiative and use technology to our advantage.

Whether it is by joining online discussions, attending virtual events, or using apps to report issues. We must actively engage with technology to strengthen our communities.

Technology is a powerful tool that has the potential to enhance community engagement in numerous ways. From promoting communication and transparency to providing access to education and resources. Technology offers endless possibilities for building stronger and more connected communities.

As we continue to advance technologically, let us not forget to use these innovations to bring positive changes in our communities. Let us embrace technology and build stronger and more engaging communities together.
