A Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was diverted to Saudi Arabia after a violent cockpit incident left the captain injured and triggered an emergency response on September 30, 2026. The aircraft, flight FZ1073, was carrying 174 people when the crisis unfolded roughly two and a half hours after departure.
According to Israeli officials cited by Reuters, the co-pilot allegedly stabbed Captain Smit Machchhar during the flight and attempted to crash the aircraft. However, authorities have not established the final motive, and Flydubai has urged the public to avoid premature conclusions while investigators gather evidence.
The Boeing 737 MAX 8 was flying toward Tel Aviv when the situation suddenly escalated. Flight-tracking data showed a dramatic loss of altitude during the incident. Reuters reported that the aircraft plunged nearly 14,000 feet in less than 30 seconds before the crew stabilized it.
The aircraft also transmitted emergency signals. It first used the general emergency code 7700 before switching to code 7500, which indicates unlawful interference. These signals alerted authorities that the aircraft was facing an unusually serious situation.
Inside the cabin, passengers reportedly realized something was wrong as the plane began to descend sharply. Reports said the injured captain managed to open the cockpit door. That allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and confront the alleged attacker.
Several people then helped restrain the co-pilot. At the same time, other qualified crew members assisted with the aircraft. The plane eventually diverted to Tabuk Regional Airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely at about 6:45 GMT.
The captain and co-pilot were both injured and taken to hospital in Tabuk. India’s embassy in Saudi Arabia identified Machchhar as an Indian national and said he was receiving medical treatment. The embassy also said it was in contact with his family and Saudi authorities.
The passengers later continued their journey to Israel on a replacement Flydubai flight. Images and videos from Ben Gurion Airport showed passengers arriving safely after the frightening ordeal.
The incident has prompted questions about aviation security, cockpit protection and the screening of flight crew. It has also raised concerns about how an alleged attack could occur inside a secured cockpit during a commercial flight.
Still, investigators have not reached a final conclusion about what caused the incident. The UAE has opened an investigation, with authorities examining the circumstances, possible motives and whether the event had any connection to terrorist activity or prior planning.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the injured captain and the passengers who helped stop the incident.
He said their actions prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also praised Machchhar for his actions during the emergency.
At the same time, officials have been cautious about identifying the motive. Israeli authorities have raised the possibility of a deliberate attack, while other officials have stressed that the investigation remains active.
No final finding has established that a terrorist organization directed the incident.
The identity and background of the alleged attacker have also become part of the investigation. Reuters and other outlets reported that Israeli officials identified the co-pilot as an Omani national.
Saudi authorities detained him after the emergency landing, while investigators began examining his actions and possible motives.
The UAE Attorney General ordered investigators to collect information and evidence about the incident.
The probe is expected to examine whether the event involved terrorist activity, prior planning or another motive. Israel has also indicated that it may participate in the investigation.
The incident has also affected Flydubai’s operations. The airline suspended flights to and from Israel on October 1 while authorities investigate the cockpit incident.
The suspension adds another layer to the disruption caused by the emergency and reflects the seriousness with which the airline is treating the investigation.
The flight’s route also made the incident especially sensitive. The aircraft was traveling between the United Arab Emirates and Israel, two countries that established diplomatic relations in 2020.
Saudi Arabia, where the plane landed, does not have formal diplomatic relations with Israel, making the emergency landing an unusual example of regional coordination during a crisis.
Despite the frightening circumstances, the flight ended without a mass-casualty disaster.
The injured captain, passengers and other crew members played important roles in helping the aircraft reach the ground safely. Their actions also gave investigators valuable information about what happened inside the plane.
For the aviation industry, the case could lead to renewed discussion about cockpit security and crew screening. Airlines already use strict procedures to protect flight decks, but an alleged attack involving members of the flight crew presents a different security challenge from an external threat.
Authorities will now focus on establishing a clear timeline. They must determine what happened inside the cockpit, why the aircraft descended so rapidly, how control was restored and what led to the alleged assault.
For now, the motive remains unresolved. Flydubai has asked people to allow investigators to establish the facts.
As the UAE, Saudi Arabia and other authorities continue their work, further findings could clarify the sequence of events and whether the incident was an isolated act or part of a wider plan.
The emergency has therefore become both an aviation investigation and a major security case.
Most importantly, all passengers ultimately reached safety. The investigation will determine what happened in the cockpit and whether changes are needed to prevent a similar incident in the future.
Meanwhile, aviation authorities are expected to review the flight’s emergency procedures and the response of the crew.
The findings could influence future training, cockpit access rules and coordination between airlines, airports and security agencies when serious incidents occur during international flights.
