  • Nigel Farage’s Resignation : Political Money, Broken Rules and the Africa Diaspora Question

Nigel Farage’s resignation as MP for Clacton has turned a parliamentary standards controversy into a wider test of political money, democratic accountability and migration politics. With major parties refusing to contest the by-election, the episode raises urgent questions about whether electoral theatre can be used to weaken parliamentary scrutiny — and what that means for African diasporas in Britain, Ireland and at home....

  • Teaching Al-Musannaf Requires Rare Scholarly Expertise Beyond the Reach of Many Nigerian Scholars

Renowned Islamic scholar and founder of Darul Hadith Salafiyya, Zaria, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam (Albani Zaria), has stated that teaching Kitabul Al-Musannaf requires an exceptional level of scholarly competence that, according to him, many Nigerian Islamic scholars do not possess.

The late cleric made the remarks during one of his Sahih al-Bukhari lectures in 2013, while discussing contemporary religious issues and the qualifications required to teach classical Islamic texts.

According to Sheikh Albani, Al-Musannaf is among the most comprehensive works in Islamic scholarship and demands mastery of several disciplines before a scholar can competently teach its contents.

"Teaching Kitabul Al-Musannaf requires rare scholarly expertise beyond what many Nigerian scholars possess," he said.

He explained that a scholar seeking to teach the book must possess extensive knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), Hadith sciences (Mustalah al-Hadith), Islamic history (Tarikh), principles of narration, and other related Islamic sciences.

Albani argued that beyond academic qualifications, teaching the text requires years of specialization, extensive research, and a deep understanding of the differences among classical scholars and schools of thought.

According to him, many scholars lack the time, specialization, and depth of knowledge necessary to undertake such a demanding scholarly responsibility.

The respected scholar maintained that teaching advanced Islamic texts without the required expertise could lead to misunderstanding, inaccurate interpretations, and confusion among students of knowledge.

KaNo —

The Imo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects, Onyema Okonkwo and Emmanuel Onyekachi, over the alleged rape and murder of a 21-year-old nursing student, Wendy Achumba, in Umuadara Umulogho, Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State.

Until her death last Thursday, Wendy was a student of Our Lady of Mercy Nursing School, Obowo, where she was undergoing post-basic training in midwifery.

According to the spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, DSP Henry Okoye, said on Sunday that operatives of the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters, in collaboration with community stakeholders, arrested the two suspects following intelligence-led investigations into the incident.

Okoye disclosed that 32-year-old Onyema Okonkwo confessed to raping and killing the victim in an attempt to cover up the crime.

He added that the suspect also implicated 25-year-old Emmanuel Onyekachi as an accomplice, alleging that both men killed the student after she recognised them.

He also revealed that the suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation and prosecution.

“Operatives of the Obowo Divisional Police Headquarters, in collaboration with community stakeholders, have arrested two suspects allegedly connected with the rape and murder of Wendy Achumba, aged 21, a post-basic nursing student of Mercy College of Nursing Science, Umulogho, whose lifeless body was discovered in her private off-campus residence at Umuadara, Umulogho, in Obowo LGA” Okoye said

The suspects, Onyema Okonkwo, aged 32, and Emmanuel Onyekachi, aged 25, both indigenes of Umuadara Umulogho, were arrested following sustained intelligence-led investigative efforts by operatives of the division in synergy with community stakeholders.

“During the investigation, Onyema Okonkwo confessed to the killing of the victim after forcibly having unlawful carnal knowledge of her on multiple occasions in an attempt to conceal his crime and further implicated Emmanuel Onyekachi as being involved in the matter. To this end, the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command, CP Audu Bosso, assures the public that the matter is being handled with utmost diligence and professionalism and that anyone found culpable will face the full weight of the law”he added

Traditional Ruler Condemn Act
The traditional ruler of Umuadara Umulogho, Eze Patrick Uwalaka, alongside members of the community where the nursing school is located and where the deceased lived in an off-campus apartment have publicly denounced the killing and dissociated themselves from the crime.

Eze Uwalaka and members of the community on Sunday gathered at the village square to condemn the killing and invoke traditional sanctions against the perpetrators.

The monarch said the community had no involvement in the incident and reaffirmed that Umulogho remained peaceful and safe for residents.

He also urged anyone with prior knowledge of the crime to come forward and speak up.

“We, the people of Umulogho, are here to denounce this wicked act. We know nothing about it, and we exonerate ourselves and the land from any repercussions. Let the gods deal with the perpetrators” he said

“Our land is safe, and we are good people. If anyone has prior knowledge of this act, such a person should come forward before the wrath of the deities,” the monarch added

Also speaking, the president of Umulogho Youths, Chidiebere Iweajunwa, commended the role played by the community youth body in aiding the arrest of the suspects and called for speedy prosecution.

Nursing Forum Demand Justice
The Elegant Nurses Forum has condemned the gruesome killing of a student nurse, Miss Chinwendu Achumba, of the College of Nursing Sciences, Umuadara Umulogho, Imo State, describing the incident as “heartbreaking and barbaric.

In a statement issued by its National Coordinator, Nurse Thomas Abiodun Olamide, on Sunday, the forum said it received the news of her death “with deep shock, pain and anger.”

According to the group, the young nursing student was “brutally raped and murdered inside her room by suspected criminals who forcefully gained access into her residence.

Describing the killing as a reflection of worsening insecurity in the country. the forum said, “Such barbaric wickedness against an innocent young woman is not only evil but a direct reflection of the worsening insecurity and moral collapse currently threatening lives across Nigeria”

The group condemned what it described as continued government failure to protect citizens, especially women and students.

“We strongly condemn this horrific act and the continued failure of both the Imo State Government and the Federal Government to adequately secure the lives and properties of citizens,” the statement read

It added that “Nigeria is gradually becoming unsafe, especially for the girl child and women generally,” warning that “female students now live in fear, while young professionals continue to become victims of violent crimes due to the negligence and inefficiency of those entrusted with the responsibility of protecting the people.”

The forum also lamented the condition of nurses in the country, saying they remain “among the most humiliated and neglected professionals under the current dispensation.”

“Despite sacrificing their lives daily to care for humanity, they continue to face poor welfare, insecurity, intimidation and abandonment.

“It is heartbreaking that a promising Nurse whose dream was to save lives had her own life cut short in such a cruel and painful manner.”

The Elegant Nurses Forum demanded urgent action and accountability, calling for the “immediate and thorough prosecution of every individual connected to the rape and murder of Miss Chinwendu Achumba.
