  • Tinubu Meets Kagame in Kigali, Pushes for Stronger Africa Trade Partnership President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has arrived in Kigali, Rwanda, following his participation at the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, where African leaders discussed a new partnership model focused on trade, investment, innovation, infrastructure, and shared prosperity. Tinubu thanked Rwandan President Paul Kagame for the warm reception and described their bilateral meeting at the Urugwiro Presidential Village as productive. According to the Nigerian leader, discussions centered on expanding trade between Nigeria and Rwanda, as well as early-stage talks with RwandAir on a flat-rate cargo arrangement aimed at helping Nigerian businesses move goods more efficiently across Africa. President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), stressing the need for African nations to strengthen intra-African trade, improve market access, deepen digital commerce, and remove barriers limiting business growth across the continent. He also announced that Nigeria will host the AfCFTA Council of Ministers and Digital Trade Forum in June, alongside the Intra-African Trade Fair (IATF) and CANEX events scheduled for November 2026 and 2027. Tinubu said Africa’s future would be shaped not by speeches alone, but through trade, investment, innovation, and stronger confidence in African markets. #Tinubu #Kagame #Nigeria #Rwanda #AfCFTA #AfricaForward #Trade #Investment #Africa #BreakingNews #TrendingNow

Unveiling Opportunities and Challenges for a Growing Sport

Squash rising in Northern Nigeria is a phenomenon slowly gaining recognition among sports enthusiasts, students, and professionals alike.

Though the sport is often overshadowed by football, basketball, and athletics in the region, squash has quietly carved out a niche for itself, offering players not just a physical challenge, but also a test of strategy, mental agility, and endurance.

The rise of squash in the North represents a growing interest in diversifying sports engagement beyond the traditional games, highlighting both opportunities and challenges for its future development.

Globally, squash is known as a fast-paced racquet sport that requires agility, quick reflexes, and strategic thinking.

It is played in enclosed courts, where two players (singles) or four players (doubles) compete to strike a small rubber ball against the front wall in such a way that the opponent is unable to return it.

Squash Rising In The Northern Nigeria

Originating in the mid-19th century in England, squash quickly spread to other parts of the world, including Africa.

In Nigeria, the sport has been present for several decades but has historically thrived more in the southern regions where better facilities and organized clubs were available.

However, the narrative is gradually shifting in the northern states as interest grows and more people are introduced to the sport.

Northern Nigeria, with its vibrant cities such as Kaduna, Kano, Jos, and the Federal Capital Territory of Abuja, has seen a steady increase in the number of squash enthusiasts.

The game is primarily played in private clubs, hotels, universities, and sports complexes where proper squash courts exist.

For many players in the North, these courts represent rare but valuable spaces where they can train and compete.

While access remains limited compared to the South, the passion for the game is undeniable, and the few facilities available often host local tournaments that attract considerable attention.

Squash Rising In The Northern Nigeria

One of the significant drivers behind squash’s rise in Northern Nigeria is the influence of educational institutions. Universities and polytechnics with sports facilities have begun integrating squash into their extracurricular programs.

Students are encouraged to participate not only to maintain fitness but also to develop discipline and mental focus.

Sports coordinators in institutions like Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and Bayero University in Kano have reported increasing enrollment in squash training sessions, indicating a growing curiosity among young people.

This trend suggests that squash could soon become more mainstream among the youth population if given proper support.

Despite its gradual growth, squash in Northern Nigeria faces several challenges that have hindered widespread adoption.

The most pressing issue is infrastructure. Unlike football fields or basketball courts, squash requires specialized indoor courts with regulated dimensions and materials.

Constructing and maintaining these courts is expensive, and in many northern states, public sports facilities prioritize more popular games, leaving squash underfunded and often inaccessible.

This infrastructural gap limits opportunities for aspiring players, particularly those from middle or lower-income backgrounds who cannot afford private clubs or membership fees.

Squash Rising In The Northern Nigeria

Another challenge is awareness. Squash remains relatively unknown to the general public, with limited media coverage and exposure.

Most people in Northern Nigeria are familiar with football tournaments on television or local athletics competitions, but squash events rarely receive similar attention.

This lack of visibility affects participation rates and discourages potential talent from pursuing the sport seriously.

Furthermore, coaching remains an obstacle, as there are few certified squash trainers in the region. Without access to professional guidance, players struggle to improve their skills and compete at higher levels, further slowing the sport’s growth.

However, the potential for squash in Northern Nigeria is enormous. The sport offers numerous benefits that go beyond physical fitness.

Squash improves hand-eye coordination, strengthens mental agility, and fosters strategic thinking, qualities that are transferable to many aspects of life.

For students and young professionals, engaging in squash can help develop focus, patience, and resilience.

Moreover, the sport has the capacity to attract sponsorship and support from local businesses and government agencies if promoted effectively, creating opportunities for tournaments, training camps, and youth programs.

Several success stories in Northern Nigeria highlight the potential for squash to flourish. Local players who began in university programs or private clubs have gone on to compete in state-level and national competitions, demonstrating that talent exists despite limited resources.

Squash Rising In The Northern Nigeria

Coaches and mentors play a crucial role in these achievements, guiding players through rigorous training regimens and helping them navigate the challenges of the sport.

These stories serve as inspiration and show that squash can become a viable and rewarding pursuit in the North.

Efforts to promote squash have also begun to take shape through organized competitions. Tournaments hosted in cities like Kaduna and Abuja provide a platform for players to showcase their skills and engage with the broader squash community.

These events not only elevate the profile of the sport but also encourage networking among players, coaches, and sports enthusiasts.

By highlighting competitive opportunities, tournaments help create a culture of recognition and achievement that is essential for any sport to thrive.

In addition to institutional and community efforts, there is a role for government policy in supporting squash’s growth.

Investment in sports infrastructure, particularly indoor facilities, can provide more access to training spaces.

Introducing squash into school sports curricula and providing funding for coaching certification programs would further strengthen the foundation for the sport.

Squash Rising In The Northern Nigeria

Partnerships with private clubs and international squash organizations could also bring expertise, equipment, and exposure to Northern Nigerian players, enabling them to compete at higher levels both nationally and internationally.

Beyond the technical aspects, promoting squash in Northern Nigeria has social implications. The sport can serve as a unifying activity, bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in healthy competition.

In a region where youth unemployment and limited recreational opportunities are challenges, squash offers a constructive outlet for energy, skill development, and personal growth. It also fosters a sense of discipline and responsibility, values that are critical for societal development.

Looking ahead, the future of squash in Northern Nigeria is promising if the right strategies are implemented.

Awareness campaigns, investment in infrastructure, and professional coaching are key factors that can transform the sport from a niche pastime to a mainstream activity.

Encouraging youth participation, hosting local and regional tournaments, and celebrating player achievements will create a culture that values and supports squash.

Squash Rising In The Northern Nigeria

As more individuals and institutions recognize the sport’s benefits, Northern Nigeria could emerge as a hub for squash talent in Nigeria, contributing to the country’s overall sports landscape.

In conclusion, squash rising in Northern Nigeria is more than just a story of a sport gaining traction; it is a narrative of potential, resilience, and opportunity.

While challenges such as limited infrastructure, low awareness, and lack of professional coaching remain, the growing interest in squash among students, professionals, and sports enthusiasts signals a positive trend.

By investing in facilities, coaching, and tournaments, and by promoting the sport through media and educational programs, Northern Nigeria can nurture a new generation of squash players who will compete nationally and internationally.

The rise of squash in the North is a testament to the region’s evolving sports culture and a call to action for stakeholders to support this promising sport.
