Club World Cup: Messi inspires Inter Miami to first win as the American club record first victory over European opponents

During the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup in America, Inter Miami record first in courtesy Messi’s free-kick.

It was a tense match last night as the American club was heading to one-all with Portuguese club, FC Porto, in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup.

Lionel Messi scored his first goal of the tournament from 20 yards to ensure Inter Miami record their first win in the competition following their one-all draw with Al-Hilal of Egypt four days ago.

Some things are bound to happen in the game of football as the ball landing in the back of the net when the Argentinian measures up the goal post before launching a free-kick into the net from 20-yards out.

It was a remarkable reminder to the world of football─do we even need a reminder─that Messi can still deliver memorable moments during Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over FC Porto.

The Argentine’s free-kick was a typical of his trademark and the Porto’s goalkeeper Claudio Ramos could have done to keep the ball out.

Of course, this was a man who scored fantastic 73 goals in 60 matches across all competitions during 2011-12 season while at Barcelona.

Standing centrally and on the edge of the D-area, the goal came as Messi’s mercy, but he chose a more difficult approach─launching the ball over the wall and to the far side of the goalkeeper.

This goal records his 68th goal from direct free-kicks Messi is highly experienced and lacks nothing while it comes to confidence and ability.

Only Brazilian Juninho Pernambucano has most free-kick goals (77), who spent most of his footballing career with French club, Lyon, and Pele, another Brazilian, with 70 goals from direct free-kicks, four goals ahead of Messi.

“Touched by God, isn’t he? Incredible. What a player,” former Portugal defender Jose Fonte said on Dazn.

“If you get a chance to go see this guy live – you go and see him. This is what he does,” ex-Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given added on Dazn.

“It’s nearly like a penalty for him – he is so precise. He is a genius.

“You call him maestro, magician, the words run out.”

After Messi’s strike, there came another fantastic finish from his Inter Miami team-mate Telasco Segovia, which completed a comeback win over FC Porto to position Inter Miami solidly in the running for a place in the round of sixteen at the FIFA Club World Cup.

Inter Miami’s win over Porto means a first time Major League Soccer (MLS) club have recorded a victory in the competition which also simply means that a draw in their final Group A tie with Brazilian club Palmeiras, who are the group toppers, would send both teams through to the next round.

Messi Still Has Amazing Feet

Just almost two years on that Messi left Europe and Paris Saint-Germain for the Major League Soccer (MLS), he remains one of the leading players in the history of round leather game.

Since joining Inter Miami almost two years ago, Messi has taken his goal tally for the club to 50 goals in 61 games and had emerged as the MLS outfit’s all-time leading scorer, albeit the club were inly established in 2018─seven years ago.

The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner is not an alien to delivering in the Club World Cup, having netted six times in seven appearances.

During his playing time with FC Barcelona, he netted five goals, including three in the finals of the competition, and became victorious in the competition in 2009, 2011, 2015.

Messi has netted fantastic 754 club goals and is not tired of scoring as he looks so hungry to score more.

“He’s the greatest player in the world,” said Inter Miami teammate Fafa Picault.

He remains joint-second in the ranking for all-time Club World Cup top scorers with Gareth Bale and Kareem Benzema with six each, and he is just a goal behind all-time top scorer in the competition, Cristiano Ronaldo (7).

No other player has recorded more completed dribbles than Messi, who tally of two dribbles at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta, while is also ranked fifth for most attempted passes in the game (56).

“You can have a high pass completion, but you’re not affecting the game,” ex-Scotland midfielder Don Hutchison said on Dazn.

“Lionel Messi does both, he is affecting the game, he is controlling the game. He is controlling his team-mates, he never gives the ball away.

“Lionel Messi has still got those amazing feet. At his age, 37, still dancing through.”

The Argentine maestro also recorded third for touches against Porto with 70, only Inter Miami’s team-mate Sergio Busquets (85) and Porto’s Fabio Vieira (99) have more.

World Can See That We Can Compete

Messi is close to celebrating his 38th birthday on Tuesday by booking a spot in the next round of the competition.

Inter Miami, with a mix of oldies in their squad like Lionel Messi, Luiz Suarez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Arba─allo who gave their youth years to Barcelona─and some American younger players, Inter Miami have raised their expectations.

Victory over FC Porto, yesterday, marked the first time ever an MLS team defeated an European side in an official competition.

“Today we showed to the world and ourselves that we can compete against any team,” manager Javier Mascherano told Dazn.

“It is great for the people of the USA to see our team compete in this kind of tournament.”

Ahead of this edition of the re-formatted Club World Cup, only one MLS side had featured in the competition─Seattle Sounders─who are also participating this year, they reached the second round three years ago.

Inter Miami, Los Angeles FC and the Sounders are all featured in this current competition, venued on home soil.
