The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, in the sum of N100 million with one surety in like sum.

Making Healthcare Affordable In Plateau State is a call to action for all the political and healthcare stakeholders in Plateau State.

Plateau State Needs Government Subsidy for Accessible Healthcare Services. 

In recent years, healthcare in Plateau State has become a major concern for residents. 

Despite the presence of vital institutions like Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), many people in the region face significant barriers to accessing quality medical care.     

A primary factor contributing to this issue is the high cost of services, which often leaves the most vulnerable populations struggling to afford even basic treatment.

It’s time for the Nigerian government to intervene, reconsider its funding priorities, and introduce healthcare subsidies.

This would make healthcare more accessible for the people of Plateau State.

The High Cost of Healthcare in Plateau State

One of the major challenges facing healthcare in Plateau State is the skyrocketing cost of services, especially at public hospitals like JUTH. 

While private hospitals can often be even more expensive, public healthcare institutions, which should serve as affordable alternatives, are not better. 

Many patients cannot pay for necessary treatments, and in the worst cases, this leads to delays in care or complete neglect of medical needs. 

The cost of hospital services, including consultations, medications, and diagnostic tests, has increased dramatically.

This is due to several factors such as high import duties on medical supplies and insufficient funding from the government.

In a state like Plateau, where many residents live on limited incomes, these high costs are unaffordable for the average person. 

A recent survey found that more than 60% of families in Plateau State delay medical care due to financial constraints. 

This is not just a personal tragedy, however, it has wider implications for public health, leading to preventable diseases and worsening health outcomes.

Making Healthcare Affordable In Plateau State

The Need for an Urgent Government Intervention

The government has a crucial role in making healthcare more accessible to the people of Plateau State. 

Subsidising healthcare services could be one of the most effective ways to address the financial barriers that prevent people from seeking necessary treatment. 

A subsidy would reduce the cost of medical services, making them more affordable and ensuring that more people receive the care they need.

The Nigerian government must prioritise healthcare.

This is especially true in regions like Plateau, which face unique challenges such as overcrowded public hospitals, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and an increasing population. 

“Investing in healthcare services will not only improve the well-being of individuals but will also have long-term economic benefits. A healthier population is more productive, which in turn drives economic growth and stability”

Illustrating the Need: 

Subsidies in other regions of the world have shown significant benefits. 

In countries like South Africa and Brazil, government subsidies have led to improved healthcare access, particularly for lower-income populations. 

For example, in South Africa, the government introduced a National Health Insurance scheme, which aimed to make healthcare more affordable for citizens. 

The result has improved access to medical care, particularly in rural areas, where healthcare infrastructure is severely lacking.

Similarly, in India, subsidies on generic medications have made life-saving drugs affordable for millions of people, helping to lower the burden of diseases like tuberculosis, malaria, and even HIV. 

The impact has been profound, as it has saved countless lives and prevented unnecessary deaths due to the inability to afford basic medicines.

Making Healthcare Affordable In Plateau State

How a Subsidy Could Work in Plateau State

For a subsidy to be effective in Plateau State, the government must target the most pressing issues contributing to the high cost of healthcare services. 

Here’s a personal suggestion of how it could be done;

Direct Subsidy to Hospitals: 

The government could provide a direct subsidy to public hospitals, like JUTH, to lower the cost of services for patients. 

This would help hospitals manage operating costs and reduce the financial burden on patients.

 Subsidy for Medications: 

A significant portion of the high costs associated with healthcare comes from expensive medications. 

By subsidising essential drugs, the government can make treatments more affordable for patients who would otherwise have to choose between paying for food or paying for medicine.

Health Insurance Scheme: 

The government could introduce or expand health insurance schemes that cater specifically to the needs of Plateau State residents. 

With more people covered, the overall demand for public healthcare will be spread out, reducing the pressure on hospitals and ensuring that patients don’t have to pay high costs.

Improved Funding for Medical Equipment: 

Government funding should also be directed toward acquiring modern medical equipment. 

Many public hospitals in Plateau State operate with outdated tools.

This increases the cost of services as patients are forced to pay for additional tests or treatments, which could have been avoided with better equipment.

Benefits of Subsidised Healthcare

The benefits of providing subsidies for healthcare services are not limited to individual health.

Affordable healthcare can have wide-reaching economic advantages. 

For instance, when people have access to timely medical care, they are less likely to miss work due to illness.

This improves productivity and supports the local economy.

Furthermore, when healthcare costs are subsidised, there is an increase in preventative care, reducing the long-term cost of treating chronic illnesses. 

People who have access to affordable services are more likely to undergo regular check-ups.

This can prevent costly and complex health conditions down the road.

Agriculture : A Call For Youth Empowerment On The Plateau

The Way Forward:

The time for action is now.

The Nigerian government must reconsider its priorities and recognise that subsidising healthcare services in Plateau State is not just a social responsibility, rather it’s a wise economic decision. 

By investing in accessible healthcare, the government will not only improve the lives of the people of Plateau but will also contribute to the overall development of the nation.
