A coalition of opposition political parties and stakeholders under the G-100 platform has initiated talks aimed at presenting a united front for Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with plans underway for a major summit in Abuja on August 18, 2026.
The move, which is seen as one of the most coordinated efforts in recent years to consolidate opposition strength, follows a series of consultations between the G-100 and leaders of six opposition political parties.
These include the African Democratic Congress, Allied Peoples Movement, National Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Peoples Redemption Party, and Social Democratic Party.
In a statement issued on Monday and signed by Salihu Lukman on behalf of the G-100, the group disclosed that the consultations had laid the groundwork for deeper discussions on how opposition parties could collaborate effectively and present a credible alternative to Nigerians in the next election cycle.
The statement, titled “G-100: Consultations with opposition leaders set stage for unity summit,” revealed that representatives of the coalition had held meetings with national chairmen, presidential candidates, and running mates of the participating parties.
“We have deliberately kept these consultations away from the glare of the media, in recognition of the sensitivity of many of the discussions and the need to allow party leaders to engage frankly and constructively without the pressure of premature public commentary,” the statement read.

“The leaders consulted recognise that a credible and effective opposition can only emerge through sacrifice, compromise and a willingness to place the larger interests of the country above narrow partisan or individual considerations,” the statement added.
Key issues likely to dominate the talks include the possibility of adopting a single presidential candidate, power-sharing arrangements, and the structure of a potential coalition.
The G-100 emphasised that it does not intend to impose any predetermined outcome on the parties but will instead act as a facilitator to build trust and encourage dialogue among the various political actors.
“The G-100 does not presume to dictate the outcome of these conversations. Our role is to facilitate dialogue, build confidence and help create the conditions in which the participating political parties can openly consider the difficult questions of cooperation, sacrifice, accommodation and collective action,” it stated.
Observers Say United Opposition Necessary
Observers say the initiative is a response to growing concerns that a fragmented opposition may struggle to mount a strong challenge against the ruling party in 2027.
Over the years, divisions among opposition parties have often weakened their electoral prospects, despite widespread public demand for alternative political leadership.
The G-100 noted that its initiative draws inspiration from the principles of the Ibadan Declaration, which calls for a credible pathway toward presenting a sole candidate in national elections.
According to the group, recent consultations have revealed a convergence of views among opposition leaders, although translating this goodwill into a workable framework remains a significant challenge.
Preparations for the summit are already underway, with the G-100 working closely with representatives of the participating parties to ensure a smooth and inclusive process. The group assured that the summit would be anchored on mutual respect and transparency.
“We are committed to ensuring that this process is deliberate, inclusive and anchored on mutual respect. Sustainable political cooperation cannot be imposed; it must be built through trust and consensus,” the statement noted.
The latest development comes amid heightened political activities across the country, as parties begin early positioning for the 2027 elections.
With several prominent figures expected to declare their ambitions in the coming months, discussions around alliances and coalition-building have taken centre stage in Nigeria’s political landscape.

“The central argument of the Doctrine of Necessary Democratic Opposition remains unchanged: Nigeria’s democracy is strengthened when citizens are presented with a credible alternative capable of competing effectively for their mandate,” the group stated.
It warned that continued disunity among opposition parties would undermine efforts to provide such an alternative.
“At this critical moment in our national journey, fragmentation among those seeking to provide that alternative serves neither the opposition nor the Nigerian people,” it added.
While the consultations held so far mark an important first step, the group acknowledged that the process of building consensus among diverse political interests would likely be lengthy and complex.
Group Urges Political Leaders To Demonstrate Courage
It called on political leaders to demonstrate patience, courage, and a willingness to make difficult decisions in the interest of the country.
“The task ahead will require patience, courage and, above all, sacrifice,” the statement concluded.
As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, the August 18 summit is expected to test the readiness of opposition parties to move beyond individual ambitions and embrace collective action.
The outcome of the meeting could determine whether the opposition can finally unite behind a single candidate or continue to operate along fragmented lines.
The development is also unfolding as political parties begin uploading details of their presidential candidates and running mates on the Independent National Electoral Commission portal, signalling the gradual commencement of the electoral process.
