• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Exploring Kano’s Renaissance in Healthcare Amidst Rich Culture revisits the well-documented transition of healthcare in the ancient city of Kano.

From the era of its unadulterated Hausa Empire to the now embedded Hausa-Fulani Empire, the healthcare of Kano has metamorphosed into what it is this day and will continue to unravel, positively.

Kano State, in northern Nigeria, has a rich history that goes back over a thousand years.

As one of West Africa’s oldest cities, Kano has long been a bustling center of trade, culture, and education. The city emerged as a major trading hub during the Trans-Saharan trade, known for its textiles, leather goods, Dying Businesses and agricultural products. Over time, it became a political and economic powerhouse, playing a significant role in the region.

Kano was part of the Hausa Kingdoms and became an important center for Islam in the 11th century. The Fulani Jihad in the early 19th century brought about the Sokoto Caliphate, which further solidified Kano’s place in Islamic history.

The emirate system began at this time, with the first emir being Usman dan Fodio. Since then, Kano has had 57 emirs, each contributing uniquely to its development.

Some notable emirs in Kano state include Muhammad Rumfa 1463–1499, who helped boost trade and spread Islam; Ibrahim Dabo 1807–1819, who was influential in local politics; Alhaji Mohammed Sanusi 1954–1963, known for modernizing Kano, Ado Bayero1963–2014, who promoted peace and development; and Muhammad Sanusi II 2014–2020-till date, recognized for his progressive ideas on economics and education.

INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT AT ITS PEAK

In recent years, Kano State has seen significant infrastructural development. Investments in roads, housing, and urban planning have changed the landscape. Major roads, like the Kano-Kaduna Highway, have improved connectivity, making it easier for people to trade and travel.

The Kano Free Trade Zone has also attracted investors and created jobs for many residents. It makes Kano state livelier and more attractive. The focus on education is impressive too, with many universities and colleges, Polytechnics, Nursing School and mono-technics, helping to build a skilled workforce.

Advancements in public facilities, such as the Kano City Mall and modern markets, have improved life for many residents. While the government has made strides in various sectors, there’s one area that actively and urgently needs serious attention which is “healthcare” amid development.

THE HEALTH CRISIS IN KANO

Despite its progress, Kano State faces significant healthcare challenges. The population is too large, but there aren’t enough healthcare facilities or professionals to meet the needs of the people. Kano state government being the agent responsible for providing effective healthcare to its citizens, should revise its scheme and strategies its plans once again.

It’s worth acknowledging for the state government to train, and retrain its staff on modern schemes. Workshops, conferences and updated courses that would enjoin health personnel on current issues should be included. The government should likewise, embrace the personnel to adapt new research findings and approaches to both newly discovered diseases.

This would be a worthy evolving way to overcome healthcare needs and emerge lasting solutions to the difficulties. Many hospitals struggle with outdated equipment and shortage of trained staff. This is leading to poor health outcomes especially in child healthcare sector.

The Cholera pandemic on different occasions highlighted these issues, showing just how vulnerable the healthcare system is.

Many residents faced delays in treatment and access to essential services was severely limited. This resulted in the loss of many lives on different occasions. Given its historical significance, Kano must address these. Investing in healthcare infrastructure is not just important; it’s a healthcare challenge.

A CALL FOR INVESTMENT IN THE HEALTH CARE

By building and equipping more hospitals and health facilities, the state can make quality healthcare accessible to everyone. This engagement should also focus on training and retaining health personnel. Having enough qualified staff is vital for effective healthcare delivery. Incentivizing health professionals to work in Kano could help swiftly bridge the gap. Improving primary healthcare services can also boost the economy. The economy can be boost by bringing quality healthcare units to the grassroots can lessen the pandemic.

A healthier population is more productive, leading to economic growth and stability.

Collaborative efforts between the government, and private sectors especially would be efficient, considering the growing ability of the private sector. Collaborations between the Government, elites, and Rich persons like Alhaji Aliko Dangote, who happened to be the richest man in the continent from Kano State Nigeria, is tremendous. This is seen as examples in some of the hospitals where he did several projects for. The widely known project as such by him was featured in “Asibitin Murtala”.

However, there’s still an urgent need for Dangote Business group to reconsider investing in the centre again as part of their cooperate social responsibility. This is a privilege for Mr. Dangote as it provides him with an optimum way of paying back to his state of origin.

This would foster as well, as reinforce unity and collaboration between him and his public. These approaches could drive necessary investments in healthcare. Kano State is at a critical point, needing to balance its rich history with the pressing demands of today. Also, while the growth in various sectors has been commendable, it’s essential to further prioritize healthcare infrastructure.

By investing in hospitals, health facilities and training for health personnel, Kano can secure a healthier future for its citizens and investors.

The potential for growth and development in Kano is immense. However, it requires an overriding commitment and greater focus on health alongside other infrastructural improvements and needs. Kano State has the chance to lead by example, showing that real progress includes taking care of its people through sustainable health measures.
