• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

How Ten Ten Can Shape Nigeria’s Cultural Future is not just a question; it’s a possibility that, if nurtured, can transform Nigeria’s cultural landscape in ways unimaginable.

Ten Ten is a traditional Nigerian game that has, until now, remained largely confined to certain regions.

Yet, the potential it holds for fostering unity, creating economic opportunities, and shaping a cultural future for generations is immense.

This game, often played by children in various communities, is more than just a pastime, it embodies the spirit of collaboration, rhythm, and creativity.

In a country as diverse as Nigeria, Ten Ten has the ability to bridge gaps across ethnic and cultural divides, bringing Nigerians closer through a shared experience.

The game can also be the springboard for economic empowerment, especially for young people.

By promoting Ten Ten, we can provide avenues for financial independence, encourage entrepreneurial initiatives, and integrate this traditional game into the national cultural fabric, ensuring its survival for future generations.

The Charm of Ten Ten

The charm of Ten Ten lies in its simplicity, which belies its depth. Traditionally played by young children, especially girls, Ten Ten involves a rhythmic exchange between two participants.

They engage in a series of leg movements, creating intricate patterns while chanting songs.

The goal is to avoid matching the leg movements of the opponent, requiring speed, precision, and an eye for detail.

How Ten Ten Can Shape Nigeria’s Cultural Future

The game is usually played on the ground with no need for fancy equipment, making it accessible and inclusive.

Although Ten Ten is predominantly practiced in southern Nigeria, it holds value for Nigerians across different regions.

The game is not just a form of entertainment but a means of cultural expression. It teaches children the importance of coordination, teamwork, and focus, all while having fun.

Unfortunately, despite these merits, Ten Ten has yet to gain widespread recognition, remaining largely within the confines of local neighborhoods and villages.

The Unifying Power of Ten Ten

Nigeria, a country with over 250 ethnic groups, faces significant challenges in achieving unity.

While sporting events like football can bring Nigerians together, they often do so in ways that feel external to everyday life.

Ten Ten, however, holds the power to unite people at the grassroots level.

This traditional game can help dissolve barriers created by ethnicity, religion, and geography, creating a sense of commonality that transcends these divisions.

How Ten Ten Can Shape Nigeria’s Cultural Future

Through community-based tournaments and school programs, Ten Ten can encourage Nigerians to interact and collaborate in ways that are both meaningful and fun.

It can be a symbol of unity, where children from different parts of the country gather to compete or simply share in the joy of playing together.

When people from diverse backgrounds play the same game, it fosters a sense of belonging to a larger whole, promoting national pride and collective identity.

Economic Opportunities Through Ten Ten

While Ten Ten has the potential to unify Nigerians, its economic benefits are equally profound.

Imagine a future where Ten Ten becomes an official game, played in schools, community centers, and even national competitions.

This could open the doors for financial independence, particularly for the youth.

By hosting competitions and events, Ten Ten could provide a platform for young Nigerians to earn money, gain exposure, and build careers.

Furthermore, as the game gains popularity, it could attract sponsorships from both local and international businesses.

Merchandise, such as Ten Ten-themed clothing, accessories, or sports equipment, could create new markets for local entrepreneurs.

The rise of Ten Ten could also stimulate the tourism sector, as international visitors would be drawn to Nigeria to experience the game and its cultural significance firsthand.

Additionally, as Ten Ten garners attention, new roles would emerge in event management, coaching, marketing, and other related fields, leading to job creation.

Local artisans could also benefit from creating items related to the game, ranging from custom outfits to commemorative items for tournaments.

How Ten Ten Can Shape Nigeria’s Cultural Future

The ripple effect of Ten Ten’s success would be felt across multiple sectors, creating a dynamic ecosystem that fosters economic growth and empowerment.

Empowering the Next Generation

One of the most significant impacts Ten Ten could have is on education. Schools across Nigeria could adopt the game as part of their physical education curriculum.

Ten Ten not only promotes physical fitness but also fosters the development of critical thinking and social skills.

It teaches children how to work together, develop strategies, and deal with challenges—all crucial life skills.

As children engage in Ten Ten, they are encouraged to think on their feet and adapt quickly.

These skills extend beyond the game, helping children grow into well-rounded individuals capable of navigating life’s complexities.

Moreover, as the game requires little more than a flat surface and two players, it can be played anywhere, providing an easy and cost-effective way for children to stay active and engaged.

The educational benefits of Ten Ten also extend to fostering creativity.

The rhythmic songs and movements involved in the game are an avenue for self-expression, where children can explore their creativity in a social setting.

This aspect of the game is often overlooked but plays a significant role in helping children connect with their cultural heritage and express their identities.

Globalizing Ten Ten

Though Ten Ten is rooted in Nigerian tradition, it has the potential to capture the attention of the global community.

In a world where cultural exchanges are increasingly valued, Ten Ten could be introduced to other countries as a unique African game.

The rise of digital platforms presents an exciting opportunity for Ten Ten to be shared internationally, allowing people from around the world to learn about Nigerian culture and partake in the game from afar.

Online platforms, such as YouTube, social media, and even mobile apps, can help spread awareness of Ten Ten globally.

With the growing interest in African culture and heritage, Ten Ten could serve as a cultural ambassador for Nigeria, drawing attention to the country’s rich traditions.

International tournaments and exhibitions could be organized to showcase the game, attracting tourists and enthusiasts alike.

How Ten Ten Can Shape Nigeria’s Cultural Future

By embracing digital media, Ten Ten can transcend borders and become a globally recognized game, further enhancing Nigeria’s cultural profile on the world stage.

As people from diverse cultures engage with Ten Ten, it can evolve into a symbol of African unity and creativity.

Preserving Nigeria’s Heritage

For Ten Ten to truly thrive, it must be actively preserved and promoted.

This requires concerted efforts from the government, cultural organizations, and media outlets.

By including Ten Ten in national cultural celebrations, schools, and community events, we can ensure that future generations will inherit this cultural treasure.

Additionally, collaborations with sports federations and cultural groups could help establish Ten Ten as a formal sport, complete with a set of rules, regulations, and organized competitions.

This would guarantee the game’s longevity and relevance in the modern era.

As the game continues to grow, its cultural significance will only deepen, making it an important part of Nigeria’s identity for years to come.

In conclusion, Ten Ten is not just a traditional game; it is a potential force for unity, empowerment, and economic growth.

With its rich cultural roots and widespread appeal, Ten Ten can help shape the future of Nigeria by fostering stronger community bonds, creating new economic opportunities, and empowering the youth.

As Nigeria looks toward a brighter future, it is essential to embrace and celebrate the traditions that make the country unique.

Ten Ten is one such tradition—one that can unite Nigerians and the world while promoting financial independence and cultural preservation.

The time to elevate Ten Ten is now.
