• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Starting a football club as a tool for community engagement is an innovative and impactful way to address social issues, foster unity, and create opportunities for personal growth.

Football, being a universal language, has the power to bring people from diverse backgrounds together, making it a powerful medium for social work.

Whether you’re aiming to empower youth, promote inclusivity, or tackle specific societal challenges, a football club can be a transformative platform for change.

This guide provides a comprehensive roadmap to help you establish a football club that not only promotes the sport but also drives meaningful community engagement.

Step 1: Define Your Vision and Objectives

Every successful football club starts with a clear purpose. Begin by asking yourself:

What issues do I want to address through this club?

Who is my target audience?

What are my long-term goals?

For example, your objective might be to create a safe space for underprivileged youth, foster gender equality in sports, or promote physical and mental well-being.

Your vision will shape the club’s mission and help attract stakeholders who share your goals.

Step 2: Conduct a Community Needs Assessment

Understanding the needs of the community is essential for creating a relevant and effective football club.

Engage with community members, local leaders, schools, and other stakeholders to identify challenges and opportunities.

Conduct surveys or focus group discussions.

Observe the local demographics and existing sports culture.

Identify gaps, such as lack of recreational facilities or youth programs.

This assessment will ensure your club addresses genuine needs and garners local support.

Step 3: Secure Funding and Resources

Establishing a football club requires financial and material resources. Start by creating a detailed budget that includes costs for equipment, facilities, uniforms, and administrative expenses.

Then, explore potential funding sources:

Local Businesses and Sponsors: Partner with businesses that share your vision or have an interest in community development.

Grants and NGOs: Apply for grants from organizations that support sports and social initiatives.

Fundraising Events: Host community events such as fun runs, bake sales, or charity matches to raise funds.

Crowdfunding: Use online platforms to appeal to a broader audience for donations.

In addition to monetary support, seek in-kind donations like footballs, kits, or venue access.

Step 4: Register Your Club and Establish Governance

Also, For legitimacy and access to competitions, register your football club with the relevant local or national football association. This process often involves:

Drafting a constitution outlining the club’s structure, vision, and policies.

Appointing a governing body, including a president, treasurer, and secretary.

Establishing clear rules and regulations for players, staff, and volunteers.

A registered club is more likely to attract sponsors and participate in official tournaments.

Step 5: Recruit Staff, Volunteers, and Players

The success of your football club depends on the team behind it. Begin by recruiting:

Coaches and Trainers: Hire qualified individuals to train players and ensure their physical and technical development.

Social Workers and Counselors: Include professionals to provide guidance, mentorship, and support for players.

Volunteers: Engage community members to help with logistics, event planning, and outreach efforts.

When recruiting players, prioritize inclusivity by organizing open trials and targeting underrepresented groups, such as girls or marginalized youth.

Step 6: Secure Facilities and Equipment

Identify a safe and accessible location for training and matches. Options may include:

Public parks or school fields.

Renting or partnering with existing sports complexes.

Developing your own ground if resources permit.

Equip your club with basic necessities, such as footballs, cones, goalposts, and kits. Collaborate with sponsors or use donations to cover these costs.

Step 7: Develop a Structured Training Program

Create a training program that balances athletic development with personal growth. A well-rounded program should include:

Physical Training: Focus on fitness, agility, and strength.

Technical Skills: Develop ball control, passing, shooting, and tactical awareness.

Life Skills Workshops: Integrate sessions on teamwork, leadership, communication, and conflict resolution.

Encourage players to set personal goals and celebrate their progress, both on and off the field.

Step 8: Promote Community Engagement Through Events

Use your football club as a platform for community events and social impact. Some ideas include:

Hosting friendly matches or tournaments to bring people together.

Partnering with schools to run football clinics for children.

Organizing awareness campaigns on issues like health, education, or substance abuse.

These activities will enhance the club’s visibility and strengthen its bond with the community.

Step 9: Market Your Football Club

Branding and marketing are essential for attracting players, sponsors, and supporters. Develop a unique identity for your club with a name, logo, and slogan that reflect its mission. Use various channels to promote your activities:

Social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Flyers, posters, and announcements in local schools and community centers.

Partnerships with local media for coverage of matches and events.

Consistency in communication will help build a loyal fan base.

Step 10: Monitor Progress and Evaluate Impact

Regularly assess the performance of your football club to ensure it aligns with your goals. Track metrics such as:

Player attendance and skill improvement.

Participation in community events and tournaments.

Feedback from players, staff, and community members.

Use this data to refine your strategies and celebrate milestones, such as winning a match or achieving a funding goal.

In conclusion, starting a football club as a tool for community engagement is more than just creating a team; it’s about building a movement that unites, inspires, and transforms lives.

By following these steps, you can create a sustainable club that addresses community needs, fosters personal growth, and leaves a lasting legacy.

Football is not just a sport—it’s a powerful catalyst for social change, and your club can be at the forefront of this transformation.
