Security Forces Intensify Efforts To Rescue Abducted Victims

Security forces comprising the military, police, and operatives of the Department of State Services have intensified operations in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State following the abduction of scores of residents by suspected terrorists last Friday.

The coordinated deployment followed a directive by President Bola Tinubu, who ordered an immediate security intervention to secure affected communities and ensure the safe rescue of victims.

Authorities have provided varying figures on the number of abducted residents. While the police estimate that between 155 and 164 persons were taken, the attackers, in a video circulating online, claimed they were holding more than 500 victims.

The discrepancy has further heightened anxiety among residents and relatives of those missing.

A community leader in Babanna, a neighbouring town that has become a refuge for displaced persons, Idris Shiyaki, confirmed the presence of security personnel in the area.

Speaking to journalists, he said the situation had begun to stabilise with the arrival of troops.

“The situation now is a bit under control because they mobilised military personnel there. As I speak, the troops are still expanding their base,” Shiyaki said.

DSS Confirm Deployment

“I’m aware the team landed on Wednesday, and additional personnel are being deployed to strengthen the operation,” the source disclosed.

The attacks, which occurred on August 21, targeted multiple communities during periods of religious observance.

Armed assailants reportedly struck Kpenya Mosque in Dekara district, as well as Gidan-Zana and Kpenya villages. At least five communities Mayanga, Dekara, Kapubara, Gbagbazhi, and Yagba were affected, with several residents killed, many abducted, and homes razed.

Attackers Struck At Night

Eyewitness accounts suggest that the attackers struck shortly after night prayers, unleashing coordinated violence across the settlements.

Survivors recounted scenes of chaos, with residents fleeing into nearby bushes and neighbouring towns to escape the onslaught.

Shiyaki said security forces had also been assisting with humanitarian efforts, including the evacuation of displaced persons and the burial of victims.

“Troops have been helping with the mass burial of those killed, and military vehicles are transporting displaced persons to safer locations like Babanna,” he added.

He further alleged that some of the insurgents had lived undetected within local communities for extended periods, blending in with residents and evading security patrols.

“They’ve been living with the people for a long time. Whenever the military came for patrols, they would hide them in their homes. Many residents believed they were harmless,” he claimed.

Security officials, however, cautioned against drawing premature conclusions, noting that investigations were ongoing to determine the full scope of the attackers’ network and local dynamics.

Defence Headquarters Deploy Troops

A senior military source confirmed that the Defence Headquarters had ordered immediate deployment to the troubled area, stressing that rescue operations require careful planning.

“Personnel were deployed immediately after the President’s directive. They are already on ground in Borgu. The first priority is to gather intelligence and assess the situation. Rescue operations are not rushed because the safety of victims is paramount,” the source said.

Similarly, the Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that efforts to rescue the abducted residents had commenced but warned that such operations must be executed with precision.

“If you rush it, you risk losing the lives of the victims. It is not about speed but about preparedness. We are analysing strategies to ensure that those abducted are rescued unharmed,” Abiodun said.

The attacks have once again drawn attention to the persistent security challenges in Niger State, particularly in remote areas bordering forest reserves. Borgu Local Government Area, which shares proximity with Kainji National Park, has long been considered vulnerable due to difficult terrain and limited security presence.

Intelligence reports indicate that many of the abducted victims may be held within the expansive Kainji National Park, a dense forest reserve that has reportedly served as a hideout for armed groups.

The Managing Director of Beacon Security and Intelligence Limited, Kabir Adamu, said it was likely that the kidnappers initially moved the victims around before consolidating them in a central location within the forest.

“When such incidents occur, the kidnappers often move victims from place to place before settling them in a secure location for negotiations. They are most likely within the Kainji forest reserve,” Adamu explained.

He noted that the geography of the area gives the attackers strategic mobility, allowing them to move across state and international borders if necessary.

“From that location, they can move toward Benin Republic, Kebbi State, or even Niger Republic. However, in most cases, their intention is to hold the victims there while negotiating ransom,” he added.

A retired military intelligence officer also emphasised the need for tactical deployment within the forest to restrict the movement of the attackers.

“They will likely remain within the forest because it is their operational base. Security forces need to dominate strategic points and block escape routes,” he said.

Investigations further reveal that multiple armed groups operate within the Borgu axis, complicating security efforts.

These include factions linked to Boko Haram, Ansaru, Lakurawa, Mamuda, and other bandit groups, some of which have overlapping interests and fluid alliances.

Despite the scale of the attack, the Niger State Government has confirmed that the abductors have not yet established contact or made any demands.

The Commissioner for Information, Obed Nuhu, disclosed this during a recent television interview, noting that authorities were focused on rescue operations rather than negotiations at this stage.

The incident has also raised concerns about prior warnings issued to residents of the affected communities.

Reports indicate that some villagers had been advised to relocate due to increasing terrorist activity in the area, but many remained due to economic and social constraints.

As security forces continue their operations, residents and families of the abducted victims remain anxious, hoping for swift and safe rescue efforts.

Analysts say the success of the mission will depend largely on intelligence gathering, inter-agency coordination, and sustained military pressure within the forest corridors.
