• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles is a story of patience, discipline and steady growth in a football environment where recognition is often delayed and competition is unforgiving.

In a country blessed with abundant football talent, only a few players manage to rise quietly through the ranks and earn a place at the highest level.

Kayode Bankole’s path has not been defined by loud headlines or overnight fame, but by consistency, resilience and an unwavering commitment to his craft.

His emergence as one of the youngest goalkeepers associated with the Super Eagles today reflects not just personal ambition, but also the gradual revival of faith in homegrown Nigerian talent.

Born in Nigeria and raised within the realities of local football, Bankole’s early years were shaped by modest beginnings and an environment that demanded mental strength as much as technical ability.

Like many Nigerian footballers, his first exposure to the game came through community football and informal training grounds where passion often compensates for limited facilities.

Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles

From an early age, he showed an unusual calmness in goal, coupled with sharp reflexes and a natural reading of the game.

These qualities would later become his defining attributes as he progressed through the domestic league.

The Nigeria Professional Football League played a crucial role in Bankole’s development. It was here that he learned the true demands of professional football, facing physical forwards, unpredictable pitches and intense pressure from passionate supporters.

Playing as a goalkeeper in the NPFL is often described as a test of character, as mistakes are magnified and praise is rare.

Bankole embraced this challenge, using each match as a learning opportunity. His time at Remo Stars proved particularly important, offering him regular game time and a platform to refine his decision making, positioning and leadership at the back.

At Remo Stars, Bankole gradually earned the trust of his coaches and teammates. His performances were marked by composure, clean sheet contributions and an ability to organize the defense effectively.

Rather than relying solely on athleticism, he demonstrated intelligence in his movements and confidence in one on one situations.

These traits distinguished him from many of his peers and attracted attention beyond the domestic league.

For a goalkeeper, such recognition is often slow to come, but Bankole’s consistency ensured that he remained on the radar of national team selectors.

Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles

His move to South Africa marked a significant turning point in his career. Joining TS Galaxy in the South African Premier Division represented a step up in exposure, structure and competition.

The league’s professionalism, improved infrastructure and tactical demands provided Bankole with a new environment to test himself.

Adjusting to a different football culture is never easy, especially for a goalkeeper whose role requires constant communication and understanding with defenders.

However, Bankole approached this transition with maturity, focusing on adaptation rather than immediate prominence.

In South Africa, he faced stronger opposition, faster tempo and greater scrutiny. Training sessions were more intense, and competition for the starting position was fierce.

Yet these challenges contributed positively to his growth. The experience sharpened his shot stopping abilities and improved his distribution under pressure.

More importantly, it enhanced his mental toughness, an essential quality for any goalkeeper aspiring to succeed at international level. His progress did not go unnoticed, as reports of his performances filtered back to Nigeria.

Bankole’s eventual call up to the Super Eagles was the result of sustained effort rather than sudden fortune.

National team selection is often influenced by form, availability and long term potential, and his inclusion reflected a belief in his future rather than a short term solution.

Being among the youngest players in the squad, especially as a goalkeeper, is a significant achievement in itself.

Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles

It places him in the company of experienced professionals and exposes him to the demands of international football at an early stage.

Training with the Super Eagles offered Bankole a different perspective on the game. The standards were higher, the margins smaller and the expectations immense.

Working alongside established goalkeepers and seasoned defenders provided valuable lessons in communication, concentration and preparation.

While opportunities for immediate playing time may be limited, such exposure is vital for long term development.

It allows a young goalkeeper to understand the rhythm of international matches and the psychological discipline required at that level.

Beyond the pitch, Bankole’s journey highlights broader issues within Nigerian football.

His rise underscores the importance of domestic leagues as genuine pathways to international recognition.

For years, local league players have struggled to gain consistent national team opportunities, often overshadowed by those based abroad.

Bankole’s story challenges this trend, demonstrating that quality, when combined with patience and professionalism, can still be rewarded.

It also sends a strong message to young players across the country that dedication within the local system can open doors.

As a goalkeeper, Bankole embodies qualities that align well with modern football demands. He is comfortable playing from the back, confident in aerial situations and increasingly vocal in organizing his defense.

Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles

While he continues to refine his game, his willingness to learn and adapt stands out.

These attributes suggest a player who understands that progress is continuous and that success at the top level requires humility as much as talent.

Looking ahead, Bankole’s future with the Super Eagles will depend on consistency, opportunity and sustained performance at club level.

Goalkeeping positions are often occupied for long periods, and breaking into the starting lineup requires exceptional form and patience.

However, his age works in his favor, offering him time to grow without undue pressure. With the right guidance and continued exposure to competitive football, he has the potential to become a long term asset for the national team.

In the broader context of Nigerian football, Bankole represents a new generation of players shaped by local grit and international ambition.

His journey is neither dramatic nor sensational, but it is authentic and instructive.

It reflects the reality of professional growth, where progress is built on small victories, resilience after setbacks and an unrelenting focus on improvement.

Such stories often resonate more deeply than tales of instant stardom because they mirror the experiences of countless aspiring footballers.

Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles

Ultimately, Bankole’s Journey to the Super Eagles is still unfolding. What has been achieved so far is a foundation, not a conclusion.

His rise serves as encouragement to young goalkeepers who dream of wearing the green and white, and as a reminder that Nigerian football continues to produce talent capable of competing at the highest level.

If nurtured properly, Kayode Bankole could well become one of the defining goalkeepers of his generation, standing as proof that quiet determination can lead to remarkable destinations.
