• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Super Eagles eye redemption under new coach Eric Sekou Chelle, and fan are eagerly anticipating a turnaround in the team’s fortunes.

The appointment marks a new era for the national team.

One that holds immense promise and optimism for Nigeria’s footballing future.

Super Eagles Eye Redemption Under New Coach

Fans and experts alike are eager to see how the experienced Ivorian tactician will lead the Super Eagles to glory. Especially after a string of disappointing performances in recent years.

Chelle’s appointment comes at a critical time for Nigerian football.

With the Super Eagles needing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, they must build a competitive team capable of challenging for African and global honors.

The NFF’s decision to place their faith in Chelle has met with great hope, with many believing in his extensive experience.

His  tactical acumen will also help reignite the team’s potential.

A Coach with Vast Experience

Éric Sékou Chelle’s career trajectory reflects his deep understanding of the game and his readiness to manage at the highest levels.

Born on November 11, 1977, in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, Chelle’s footballing roots were planted early in his life.

As a central defender, he had a solid playing career that saw him represent several clubs in France, including Martigues, Valenciennes, and Lens.

Though his playing career did not make him a household name in global football.

Chelle’s leadership and tactical awareness on the field earned him respect from teammates and coaches alike.

Chelle’s international experience also includes a stint with the Malian national team, where he earned five caps.

His time in the national team setup exposed him to the intensity of international football.  His  experience has been vital in shaping his coaching philosophy.

After hanging up his boots, Chelle wasted no time transitioning into coaching, where he began his managerial journey with lower-league clubs in France.

However, it was his time with the Mali national team that truly put him on the map as a coach to watch.

Under his leadership, Mali made significant strides, including reaching the quarter-finals of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Chelle’s tactical discipline and ability to organize teams defensively while maintaining offensive threats impressed both critics and fans alike.

It was these qualities that drew the attention of the Nigerian Football Federation, and they wasted no time in offering him the prestigious role of head coach of the Super Eagles.

A Fresh Start for Nigeria’s Footballing Giants

The Super Eagles, despite their rich footballing history, have struggled to consistently perform at the highest level in recent years.

The team’s inability to secure a place at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, coupled with early exits in major tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations, has left Nigerian football fans frustrated and disappointed.

Super Eagles Eye Redemption Under New Coach

The question on everyone’s mind has been: when will the Super Eagles return to their former glory?

Éric Sékou Chelle’s arrival provides a glimmer of hope for the nation.

With a coach who has experience in both African and international football, Nigeria can expect a team that is more organized, disciplined, and capable of competing with Africa’s finest.

Chelle’s appointment signals a clear intent from the NFF to take Nigeria’s football back to the top, and much will depend on how he navigates the challenges ahead.

Nigeria’s 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign is already underway, and the Super Eagles face stiff competition in their group.

Chelle’s immediate task is to get the team back on track and secure qualification for the global tournament.

Nigeria will face tough teams like Rwanda and Zimbabwe, and with Chelle’s leadership, the Super Eagles will aim to finish top of their group and guarantee their place in the tournament.

Beyond World Cup qualification, Chelle’s goal will be to restore Nigeria’s pride on the African continent.

The Super Eagles have won three AFCON titles, but they have failed to win the prestigious tournament in recent years.

Chelle’s focus will likely be on building a team capable of competing for the AFCON title while also fostering the growth of young talent for the future.

A Tactical Innovator

Chelle’s reputation as a tactical mastermind precedes him.

As a coach, he is known for his ability to organize teams defensively and implement systems that allow his players to flourish within structured frameworks.

His defensive solidity was evident during his time with Mali, where his team was tough to break down, but Chelle is not one to shy away from attacking football either.

His philosophy involves balanced play, where defense and attack are given equal importance.

Under Chelle, the Super Eagles are expected to play with a tactical awareness that emphasizes discipline at the back while maintaining the attacking prowess for which Nigeria is known.

With a squad full of attacking talent, including the likes of Victor Osimhen, Samuel Chukwueze, and Kelechi Iheanacho, Chelle will need to strike a balance between organization and flair.

He will also have to adapt his approach based on the unique qualities of his players, a trait that will be vital as he aims to get the best out of the Super Eagles.

One area where Chelle can make a significant impact is in his approach to player development.

Nigeria is home to a pool of emerging football talent, both locally and abroad, and Chelle’s ability to spot and nurture young stars will be crucial to the Super Eagles’ long-term success.

By integrating young players into the squad and giving them opportunities to shine on the international stage, Chelle can lay the foundation for a future generation of Super Eagles that will be competitive on both the continental and global levels.

Team Cohesion and Leadership

One of the challenges Chelle will face is bringing together a squad that is full of individual talent but has sometimes struggled with unity and cohesion.

The Super Eagles have had their share of internal issues, with players often appearing disconnected or underperforming when it matters most.

Chelle’s ability to build team spirit and unity will be paramount to success.

Having a coach with experience in handling diverse personalities, like Chelle, is crucial in maintaining harmony within the team.

His leadership qualities will be put to test as he navigates the pressures of managing such a high-profile national team.

Chelle must create an environment where players are eager to give their best for the collective good.  Where individual egos are put aside for the greater good of Nigerian football.

Furthermore, Chelle’s relationship with the NFF will play a significant role in his success.

For any coach to thrive, a strong partnership with the governing body is essential.

With the backing of the NFF, Chelle can ensure that the Super Eagles have access to the best resources, training facilities, and support structures needed to succeed.

Managing Expectations and Pressure

The weight of expectation on Chelle will be enormous.

Nigeria has a passionate football fan base that demands success, and the pressure to deliver results will be intense.

Fans expect nothing less than victory, whether it’s in World Cup qualifiers or AFCON tournaments.

Managing this pressure while also keeping the team focused will be one of Chelle’s toughest challenges.

Chelle will need to foster a positive relationship with the media. Maintaining calm and composure under scrutiny will be vital for both Chelle and the team.

All these are important as they navigate the complexities of international football.

Looking Ahead: A Bright Future

While the road ahead may be with challenges, the future of Nigerian football looks promising under Éric Sékou Chelle’s leadership.

With a coach who is not only tactically astute but also deeply committed to developing young players, Chelle has the potential to build a Super Eagles team that will compete at the highest levels for years to come.

His appointment represents a fresh start, a new chapter for Nigerian football.

It represents an opportunity for the Super Eagles to reclaim their place among the world’s footballing elite.

As the team begins its journey under Chelle’s guidance, Nigerians will watch closely, hoping that this new era will be one of success, unity, and pride.

With the right leadership, tactical discipline, and the support of fans, the Super Eagles will rise to the occasion and fulfill their potential.

Only time will tell if Chelle can achieve his vision, but the early signs are promising, and the Super Eagles will be looking to soar to greater heights under their new coach.
