• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Voter choice, political competition and democratic accountability

Unveiling the hidden reality of local government polls reveals a complex web of corruption and deceit in Nigeria’s electoral process.

There is need for electoral reform in Nigeria’s Local Government Polls. It needs immediate intervention by the federal Government of Nigeria

The recent local government election in Kano and Kaduna have sparked widespread concerns.

In these regions, the ruling party secured every single local council seat. This raises serious questions about the fairness and integrity of the elections.

The situation is not unique to these states but extends to many parts of Northern Nigeria, where political pressure and external influences seem to dominate the electoral process.

This scenario calls for urgent intervention by the federal government to ensure the proper conduct of elections at the grassroots level.

A Stark Example of Electoral unfairness

The local government elections, designed to empower communities and bring governance closer to the people, should ideally reflect a fair and transparent democratic process.

However, in Kano, Kaduna state, the outcome was alarmingly one-sided.

Unveiling The Hidden Reality Of Local Government Polls

Across all local councils, candidates from the ruling party swept to victory, with no opposition gaining a foothold.

Such results are not only surprising but also raise suspicions of widespread manipulation and coercion.

This phenomenon points to a larger issue. The undue influence of state governors, political elites, and other external forces that manipulates the fairness of the elections.

In a democratic system, elections should be competitive, transparent, and free from external control.

When one party dominates to this extent, it suggests that the system is being manipulated.

The local government polls in these regions may have been technically legal, but they were far from fair or free.

This erosion of democratic values is not only detrimental to the political process. It also undermines public trust in governance.

Federal Government Intervention; Need for Immediate Action

Given the alarming trends in recent local government elections. It is imperative that the federal government should steps in, to address these issues.

The lack of impartiality and transparency in the electoral process cannot continue to be uncheck.

The federal government should consider implementing measures that guarantee a level playing field for all political parties and candidates.

One of the most effective ways to curb the influence of state governors and other political figures is to propose an order for the simultaneous conduct of all elections.

Unveiling The Hidden Reality Of Local Government Polls

State, federal and local government elections need to hold at same time.

These can help federal government to reduce the opportunity for state governors to leverage their power and influence over local elections.

Furthermore, it would effectively neutralize the ability of governors to manipulate the electoral process for their own political gain.

Holding these elections together would not only reduce the likelihood of undue influence. It will also ensure a broader sense of accountability.

Voters are likely to make informed decisions if they know that their choices for local, state, and federal offices are all decided in the same election cycle.

This would foster greater transparency, reduce the chances of manipulation.

it will give citizens a clearer, more coherent view of the political landscape.

Strengthening Electoral Processes at the Grassroots

In addition, holding elections together will enable the federal government to implement stronger safeguards to prevent external interference and political corruption.

Adequate security measures must be in place to protect voters, election workers, and ballot boxes from intimidation or violence.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) must also be empowered. They must conduct thorough monitoring and audits of the electoral process. INEC must ensure that no irregularities occur while voting.

Moreover, one of the most crucial reforms is to address the role of the media in the electoral process.

While the media plays a key role in informing the public. It can be a vehicle for political manipulation if not handled responsibly

Media outlets must strive for objectivity, providing fair and accurate coverage of political events.

This includes highlighting any instances of electoral malpractice and holding politicians accountable for their actions.

Unveiling The Hidden Reality Of Local Government Polls

A more objective and balanced media will help reduce the spread of misinformation and prevent the political corruption that currently plagues Nigerian elections.

Also, voters must be educated about their rights and the importance of their vote.

An informed electorate is less likely to fall victim to electoral manipulation. He/she is most likely to stand up against any attempts to hijack the process.

The Way Forward to Restoring Trust in Elections

The issues surrounding the recent local government elections in Kano, Kaduna, and other northern states are not just about poor outcomes or political failure.

They are indicative of deeper structural flaws in Nigeria’s electoral system. Flaws that if left unaddressed, it could undermine the democratic process itself.

If the federal government truly wants to restore confidence in the electoral process, it must take proactive steps to ensure that future elections are transparent, free from manipulation.

All elections must be genuinely reflective of the people’s will.

This requires not only systemic reforms but also a commitment to enforcing those reforms.

Holding local government elections alongside state and federal elections, implementing strict measures against external interference.

in conclusion, ensuring that the media plays an impartial role are all crucial steps toward a more democratic Nigeria.

The recent election in Kano and Kaduna is a wake-up call.

The political corruption that has tainted the grassroots electoral process must be addressed henceforth.

Reforming the way elections are conducted and ensuring that the system is protected from undue influence. It is possible for Nigeria to build a stronger, fairer democracy for its people.

While the path to electoral integrity may be challenging, it is not insurmountable.
