  • Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Understanding the terms of dog ownership is crucial for any prospective pet parent. This will help ensure a happy and healthy relationship.

Dogs have long been known as man’s best friend, offering unwavering loyalty, companionship, and even protection.

But while they are capable of deep affection, their love comes with conditions.

Owning a dog is not just about receiving unconditional love, it requires effort, responsibility, and commitment from the owner.

Many people rush into dog ownership, captivated by the idea of having a furry friend without fully considering the obligations involved.

A dog is not a toy or a temporary companion; it is a living being that depends entirely on its owner for food, shelter, medical care, and emotional support.

Those who fail to meet these conditions often find themselves overwhelmed, leading to cases of abandonment or neglect.

This article explores the realities of owning a dog, highlighting the responsibilities that come with canine companionship and the rewards that make the effort worthwhile.

The Conditions of Dog Ownership

1. Time and Commitment

Bringing a dog into your home is a long-term commitment, often spanning over a decade.

Dogs require daily care, exercise, and companionship.

Unlike other pets that may be more independent, dogs thrive on human interaction and suffer when left alone for long periods.

Neglecting a dog’s emotional needs can lead to anxiety, destructive behaviors, and depression.

This is why potential dog owners must assess their lifestyle before deciding to adopt or purchase one.

2. Financial Responsibility

Owning a dog is expensive.

Beyond the initial cost of purchasing or adopting a dog, owners must budget for:

High-quality dog food

Understanding The Terms Of Dog Ownership

Routine veterinary check-ups and vaccinations

Emergency medical expenses

Grooming costs

Training and behavioral classes

Accessories such as leashes, beds, and toys

Failure to meet these financial demands can result in poor living conditions for the dog, leading to health complications or behavioral issues.

3. Proper Training and Socialization

A well-behaved dog does not happen by accident.

Training requires patience, consistency, and knowledge of canine behavior.

Basic commands such as sit, stay, and come are essential for the safety and well-being of the dog and those around it.

Understanding The Terms Of Dog Ownership

Socialization is equally important.

A dog that has not been exposed to different environments, people, and other animals may develop fear-based aggression or anxiety.

Proper socialization ensures that a dog can adapt to various situations without stress or hostility.

4. Exercise and Mental Stimulation

Dogs are energetic animals that require regular exercise to maintain their physical health and mental well-being.

The amount of activity needed varies by breed, but all dogs benefit from:

Daily walks

Play sessions

Interactive toys

Training exercises

A dog that does not receive enough exercise or mental stimulation may become restless.

it may develop behavioral problems, or even suffer from obesity

. Active breeds, such as Border Collies and Huskies, need even more rigorous physical and mental engagement.

5. Emotional Availability

Dogs form deep emotional bonds with their owners.

They experience emotions such as joy, fear, loneliness, and even jealousy

. An owner must be emotionally available to nurture their pet, providing affection, reassurance, and companionship.

Dogs that feel ignored or abandoned often develop destructive habits such as excessive barking, chewing on furniture, or digging.

Some may even experience separation anxiety, leading to stress-related illnesses.

6. Responsible Ownership and Legal Obligations

Dog ownership is not just a personal choice; it comes with societal responsibilities. Laws regarding pet ownership vary by region, but common legal requirements include:

Licensing and registration

Vaccinations and medical care

Leash laws and pet control regulations

Understanding The Terms Of Dog Ownership

Proper waste disposal

Failing to adhere to these regulations can result in fines, legal action, or, in severe cases, the forced removal of the pet from the owner.

The Rewards of Responsible Dog Ownership

While owning a dog comes with significant responsibilities, the benefits far outweigh the challenges for those who are prepared.

1. Unmatched Companionship

Dogs offer companionship that is difficult to match.

They are always happy to see their owners, provide emotional support, and help reduce feelings of loneliness.

Their presence can bring comfort during difficult times, making them excellent companions for people of all ages.

2. Improved Physical and Mental Health

Studies have shown that dog owners tend to be more physically active due to daily walks and playtime.

Additionally, dogs have been linked to lower stress levels, reduced blood pressure, and improved mental health.

The simple act of petting a dog can trigger the release of oxytocin, a hormone associated with bonding and happiness.

3. Social Benefits

Having a dog can lead to increased social interactions.

Whether at the park, during training classes, or on daily walks, dogs create opportunities for owners to connect with other pet lovers.

This can help build friendships and a sense of community.

4. Enhanced Security

Dogs serve as natural protectors.

Even small breeds can alert owners to potential dangers, while larger breeds can act as deterrents to intruders.

Understanding The Terms Of Dog Ownership

Their heightened senses and protective instincts make them valuable assets in home security.

5. A Sense of Purpose

Caring for a dog instills a sense of responsibility and purpose.

Many people find fulfillment in nurturing their pets, knowing they are providing a loving and safe environment.

This is particularly beneficial for individuals who live alone or struggle with anxiety and depression.

In conclusion, getting a dog is one of the most rewarding decisions a person can make, but it is not without conditions.

Owning a dog requires time, financial commitment, proper training, exercise, emotional availability, and legal responsibility.

Those who fail to meet these conditions risk creating an unhappy and unhealthy environment for both themselves and their pets.

However, for those who are willing to put in the effort, the rewards are immeasurable.

A well-cared-for dog provides unwavering loyalty, companionship, and joy that can last a lifetime.

But before bringing a dog into your home, ask yourself: Are you ready to meet the conditions that come with a dog’s love?
