  • Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

The tragic killing of 16 Hunters in Edo State, has shocked the nation, raising concerns about the growing wave of mob justice.

This gruesome incident, which occurred on March 27, 2025, left 16 Northern Nigerian hunters dead under tragic circumstances.

These individuals were traveling to Kano for the Eid-el-Fitr celebration when a violent mob in Uromi, Edo State, accused them of being kidnappers simply due to the discovery of hunting rifles in their vehicle.

The incident has sparked outrage across the country, drawing attention to the dangers of vigilante justice and the urgent need for government intervention.

It is high time for the Nigerian government to take immediate action to address this problem and ensure that such heinous acts are never repeated.

The Tragic Killing of 16 Hunters in Edo State

The government must also provide proper compensation for the victims’ families, who are suffering from the loss of their loved ones in such a brutal and unjust manner.

Mistaken Identity and Jungle Justice

On that fateful day, the 16 victims, primarily Hausa hunters, were traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano, hoping to reach their destination in time for the Eid celebrations.

While en route, their truck was intercepted by local vigilantes who discovered locally made hunting rifles in their possession.

In rural areas across Nigeria, carrying hunting rifles is not an unusual sight, especially for hunters from the northern region.

However, in this case, the vigilantes mistakenly assumed the hunters were kidnappers, leading to a mob attack.

The vigilantes, who should have reported their suspicions to the proper authorities, instead took matters into their own hands.

They viciously beat and killed the 16 individuals, some of whom were burned alive inside their vehicle.

This tragic act of mob justice is a stark reminder of the dangers of allowing untrained citizens to decide the fate of others without due process.

The victims, who were innocent men traveling for a peaceful occasion, became victims of a violent and unjust system of justice.

A Call for Swift Action

The Nigerian government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has expressed deep shock over the killings.

The Tragic Killing of 16 Hunters in Edo State

In a statement, “President Tinubu condemned the incident, directing security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.

He emphasized that jungle justice has no place in Nigeria and that such actions must be eradicated from society”.

The Chief of Defense Staff, General Christopher Musa, also condemned the killings, calling for an end to mob justice and urging Nigerians to rely on security agencies for conflict resolution.

While these statements are encouraging, words alone are not enough.

The government must act swiftly and decisively to ensure that those responsible for the killings are identified and held accountable.

Furthermore, the authorities must send a clear message that mob justice will not be tolerated, and those who engage in such acts will face severe consequences.

Compensation for the Victims’ Families:

In addition to bringing the perpetrators to justice, the Nigerian government must take steps to compensate the families of the victims.

These men were not criminals; they were simple hunters who met an untimely and brutal death at the hands of a misinformed mob.

Their families, who have lost their loved ones, must be compensated for their loss.

The government has a moral obligation to support the victims’ families during this difficult time.

The Tragic Killing of 16 Hunters in Edo State

Compensation should not only be financial but also extend to providing support for the families in terms of healthcare, counseling, and other necessary resources.

The families of the 16 victims should not be left to suffer in silence, however, The government must stand by them and offer tangible support in the aftermath of this tragedy.

The Dangers of Mob Justice:

The killings in Edo State highlight a larger, more pressing issue facing Nigeria today.

the growing trend of mob justice, Across the country, vigilantes/ community police and mobs have taken the law into their own hands, meting out punishment without any regard for the legal process.

This phenomenon is dangerous and threatens the very fabric of Nigerian society.

Mob justice not only leads to innocent people being killed, as in the case of the 16 hunters, but it also undermines the rule of law and the justice system.

The Nigerian Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to a fair trial and protection from arbitrary punishment, especially over mistaken identify.

The Tragic Killing of 16 Hunters in Edo State

Mob justice strips individuals of these rights, allowing people to be judged, sentenced, and executed without any form of due process.

This unchecked violence is spreading rapidly in rural areas, where security agencies are often unable to provide adequate protection.

Without proper intervention from the government, this trend will continue to worsen, and more innocent lives will be lost.

Conclusion:

The tragic deaths of the 16 hunters in Edo State should serve as a wake-up call for the Nigerian government to address of sort of irregularities within the nation.

It is time for the authorities to take immediate action to prevent mob justice from becoming a norm in society.

The government must not only ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice but also compensate the victims’ families for their loss.

This incident highlights the need for stronger law enforcement, public education on the dangers of mob justice, and a commitment to upholding the rule of law.

Only through these measures can Nigeria hope to eradicate the menace of jungle justice and ensure that such senseless killings never happen again.
