KaNo—
Investors surged into Nigeria’s equities market on Monday as the Initial Public Offering (IPO) of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals opened to overwhelming demand, drawing billions of naira in subscriptions within minutes and marking a historic milestone for the country’s capital market.
The landmark offering was formally launched during an opening gong ceremony at the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) in Lagos, where business leaders, policymakers, traditional rulers and capital market stakeholders gathered to witness the commencement of what has been described as the largest IPO in Nigeria’s history.
President and Chief Executive Officer of Aliko Dangote, who led the ceremony, rang the closing bell to officially declare the N2.15tn public offer open, positioning the refinery as the first petroleum refining company to be listed on the NGX in its 66-year existence.
The IPO consists of 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at N525 per share, with a minimum subscription set at 10 shares valued at N5,250. The offer, which opened on September 14, 2026, is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026, subject to terms outlined in the prospectus.
The offer is open to retail investors, institutional players, and eligible African investors, reflecting a deliberate strategy to broaden ownership of the multi-billion-dollar industrial asset.
Dangote Urges Nigerians To Participate In IPO
Speaking at the event, Dangote urged Nigerians across all walks of life, including teachers, civil servants, artisans and students to take advantage of the opportunity, describing the IPO as a pathway for ordinary citizens to build wealth and participate in a transformative national project.
“The Dangote refinery IPO is more than an investment opportunity; it is an opportunity for millions of Nigerians and Africans to build lasting wealth through ownership of a world-class industrial asset,” Dangote said.
He added that the refinery was already demonstrating strong financial performance, generating substantial revenue and profitability while contributing to the country’s economic stability.
According to him, investors who subscribe to the offer stand to benefit not only from potential dividends and capital appreciation but also from long-term wealth creation that could span generations.
“This offer is designed to allow ordinary people to participate in an extraordinary success story and share in the long-term value that Dangote refinery will continue to create for decades to come,” he said.
Dangote Says Conglomerate Shifts Towards Involving Public Participation
Dangote further revealed that the IPO represents the first phase of a broader strategy to list multiple companies within the Dangote Group, signalling a shift towards greater transparency and public participation in the conglomerate’s operations.
“We fully share our prosperity with the people. That’s why we call this a ‘People’s IPO.’ The journey has just started. It’s not only about the refinery,” he stated.
He disclosed that the group intends to list all its operating entities in the future, projecting significant growth in valuation over the next decade.
“I know our own market cap, even at a 10 times price-to-earnings ratio by 2030, should not be less than $350bn,” Dangote said, adding that the NGX would serve as a springboard for potential dual listings on international exchanges.
The refinery’s financial performance has also drawn attention.
Dangote revealed that the facility generated approximately N19.47tn in revenue in the first half of 2026, with a profit after tax of N2.55tn.
When combined with the existing market capitalisations of Dangote Cement Plc and Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc, analysts estimate that the listing could create an equity cluster valued at approximately N83.5tn on the NGX, significantly deepening market liquidity and investor participation.
Global financial observers have also taken note of the development.
According to Bloomberg, Dangote’s net worth could rise to as much as $58.2bn following the IPO, representing an increase of nearly $23bn from his current estimated wealth.
Such a surge could elevate him above prominent global billionaires, including hedge fund manager Ken Griffin and technology entrepreneur Eric Schmidt, further cementing his position as Africa’s richest individual.
Dangote, however, emphasised that the IPO was not solely about personal wealth but about fostering economic independence and strengthening Africa’s industrial capacity.
“We, as Nigerians and Africans, must be bold and lead the change to develop our economies. Only then will we be taken seriously on the global stage,” he said.
The Chairman of NGX Group, Umaru Kwairanga, described the transaction as a defining moment for Africa’s capital markets, noting that it demonstrates the continent’s ability to mobilise domestic capital for large-scale industrial projects.
“This is evidence that African capital can finance projects of this magnitude. It sends a strong signal to global investors about the depth and resilience of our markets,” he said.
Gov Sanwo-Olu Says IPO Would Democratize Investment
“This transaction is changing perceptions about what is possible in Africa. It is creating opportunities for a broad spectrum of investors, from small business owners and traders to institutional investors,” he said.
The Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi commended the accessibility of the offer, noting that the relatively low entry point of N5,250 enables everyday Nigerians to participate in national economic growth.
Similarly, former NGX President Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede highlighted the rapid inflow of capital into the offer, describing the early investor response as a strong indicator of confidence in the refinery’s governance structure and long-term viability.
Regional stakeholders also lauded the development. Chief Executive Officer of the Botswana Stock Exchange, Kesegofetse Molatlhegi, said the IPO demonstrates that African-led industrial projects can achieve global significance and attract substantial investment.
Meanwhile, the Chief Executive Officer of Dangote Petroleum Refinery, David Bird, disclosed that the facility has emerged as a major exporter of refined petroleum products to Europe, while maintaining high standards of operational safety and efficiency.
Market analysts say the successful launch of the IPO could mark a turning point for Nigeria’s capital market, encouraging more large corporations to list and providing investors with access to high-value assets previously unavailable to the public.
They also note that the listing could enhance foreign investor confidence, improve market capitalisation and contribute to the overall growth of the Nigerian economy.
