Akure —
Coinbase has added Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin to its retail and institutional platforms, giving the dollar-linked digital token access to a wider group of customers.
The companies announced this latest move on October 28, 2026. Eligible users in supported regions can now trade and manage RLUSD through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the Coinbase retail app.
The listing gives Ripple another useful route to reach people and institutions that already use Coinbase. It also expands the exchange’s range of digital assets designed to maintain a steady value.
However, the launch does not mean every Coinbase service supports RLUSD yet. The companies said access for Coinbase Global Exchange customers, including use of the token as trading collateral, will follow later.
Customers can convert US dollars and other supported dollar-denominated stablecoins into RLUSD at a one-to-one rate at launch.
They can also deposit and withdraw the token across three blockchain networks: the XRP Ledger, Base and Ethereum.
These options give users more flexibility when moving RLUSD between supported services and networks.
Ripple said it will provide liquidity on Base to support RLUSD activity on the network. Liquidity refers to how easily people can buy or sell an asset without causing a large change in its price.
The support could help users trade or transfer the token more smoothly as activity develops. Still, the announcement does not guarantee a particular trading volume or level of demand.
RLUSD launched in December 2024. Ripple designed it as a stablecoin that can be redeemed for US dollars and used in digital finance.
The company says reserves backing the token include US dollar deposits, short-term US Treasury securities and other cash equivalents.
These reserves are intended to support the token’s value and redemptions. As with any financial product, users should review the issuer’s disclosures and the rules that apply in their region.
Stablecoins are widely used by crypto traders who want to move between digital assets without converting funds back into traditional bank money each time.
Supporters also see potential in payments, settlement and corporate treasury services. For example, a business may use a dollar-linked token to transfer value across supported networks.
However, actual speed, cost and availability depend on the platform, blockchain and service provider involved.
WHY THE LISTING MATTERS
The Coinbase listing gives RLUSD access to a major crypto platform serving both retail customers and institutions.
For Ripple, wider availability may make it easier for users to find the token, trade it and hold it alongside other supported digital assets.
It also places RLUSD in front of customers who may already use Coinbase for trading, custody or settlement services.
Ripple’s senior vice president of stablecoins, Jack McDonald, described the partnership as an important endorsement of RLUSD.
His comments reflected the value of being available across a platform used by institutional clients, rather than appearing only on a limited number of trading venues.
Coinbase Institutional co-chief executive Brett Tejpaul said the addition gives clients another payment option within services they already use for execution, settlement and custody.
The listing also shows how crypto platforms are broadening their stablecoin choices. Coinbase had long centred its offering on Circle’s USDC.
It has since added other options, including PayPal’s PYUSD and Open USD, which is issued through a venture backed by Visa, Mastercard and Coinbase.
RLUSD now joins that wider group of dollar-linked tokens available through the company’s services.
That competition matters because stablecoins can serve different customers and business needs.
Some users focus on trading, while others may value payment features, network support or access through institutional platforms.
Yet a listing alone does not prove that a token will gain widespread use. Adoption will depend on factors such as liquidity, fees, customer demand, regulation and how easily users can redeem their holdings.
Ripple reported that RLUSD’s market capitalisation had passed $2.4 billion in its October 28 announcement.
Reuters, citing CoinGecko data in its report that day, put the figure above $2.5 billion. The figures reflect different reported snapshots, so they should not be treated as a single exact measure.
In either case, they indicate that RLUSD has grown since its launch in late 2024, although it remains much smaller than the largest stablecoins.
For now, customers in supported regions can access RLUSD through Coinbase Prime, Coinbase Exchange and the retail app.
The companies have not announced a specific date for Coinbase Global Exchange support.
That future access is expected to include the ability to use RLUSD as collateral, but users should wait for official platform updates before assuming the feature is live.
The three supported networks also give users a choice of where to send or receive RLUSD. However, they must select the correct network when transferring tokens.
Sending an asset through an unsupported network or to an incompatible address can lead to delays or permanent loss.
Users should check the network shown by Coinbase and confirm that the receiving service supports the same route before transferring funds.
For Coinbase, adding RLUSD fits its effort to offer more assets and services in one place. For Ripple, it provides another distribution channel for a token aimed at digital payments and institutional finance. The companies will now need to turn access into sustained use.
That will depend on whether customers find the token useful, whether liquidity develops across supported networks and whether the planned expansion reaches additional trading services.
RLUSD is now available through Coinbase’s retail and institutional platforms in supported regions. The next stage will be to watch for Global Exchange access and evidence of growing use.
Until then, the listing marks an expansion in availability, not proof that RLUSD will replace existing stablecoins or become a leading payment method.
