Akure —

Balenciaga has unveiled its Spring/Summer 2027 collection at Paris Fashion Week, giving creative director Pierpaolo Piccioli another opportunity to define his vision for the luxury house.

The show took place in Paris on October 1, 2026. It arrived about a year after Piccioli became Balenciaga’s creative director following Demna’s departure for Gucci.

Piccioli focused on bringing couture techniques directly into everyday clothing. As a result, familiar pieces such as shirts, T-shirts and jeans received more elaborate construction and sharper shapes.

The designer moved the collection toward lightness and softness. That approach marked a noticeable change from some of the heavier and more oversized styles associated with Balenciaga in recent seasons.

The presentation took place inside the Tennis Club de Paris. Unlike the dark setting used for his first ready-to-wear show, the new venue was bright, open and calmer.

At the centre of the space stood a textile sculpture by French artist Aude Franjou. The work, inspired by coral, became an important visual element throughout the presentation.

Piccioli has a personal connection to coral and regularly wears a coral necklace. Therefore, the sculpture carried meaning beyond decoration. He connected it with the need to protect both nature and the fashion community.

Meanwhile, the clothing showed how strongly Piccioli wanted couture to enter everyday wardrobes. A simple white shirt, for instance, was transformed with rows of stitching that created a sculpted peplum effect.

A white T-shirt received a similar treatment later in the show. Instead of leaving the basic garment completely casual, Piccioli used couture construction to give it more shape and presence.

Jeans also received a fresh treatment. The collection featured blue denim cut on the bias, giving the familiar material a different fall and movement.

Piccioli described the technique as new for Balenciaga. It also showed how he is creating his own design language while working with the house’s history.

The collection mixed tailoring, casual clothing and eveningwear. Wide white trousers appeared alongside colourful jackets, while flowing gowns added drama.

Colour became increasingly important as the show progressed. Neutral shades such as white and cream appeared first. Later, brighter orange, pink, blue and green tones brought greater energy to the runway.

The colourful pieces included bomber jackets and tailored garments. He balanced those stronger shades with simpler pieces, keeping the collection visually connected.

Eveningwear provided some of the show’s most dramatic moments. Piccioli presented narrow black tailcoats, flowing gowns and a striking pale pink satin piece that extended into a long, voluminous train.

However, he did not completely separate eveningwear from casual dressing. One dramatic look combined an elegant top with ordinary blue jeans.

That contrast reflected one of the collection’s main ideas. Piccioli treated everyday clothes as a starting point for luxury craftsmanship rather than as separate from couture.

The designer also continued Balenciaga’s tradition of experimenting with silhouette. Some pieces had rounded shapes, while others created volume around the body without appearing excessively heavy.

Footwear followed the collection’s softer direction. Models wore minimalist sneakers, flat thong sandals and slipper-like shoes instead of relying heavily on the chunky styles that became strongly associated with Balenciaga under Demna.

Accessories also appeared in a more understated form. Bright handbags were shown without prominent logos, allowing their colour and shape to attract attention.

The approach reflected a wider shift within luxury fashion. As consumers become more selective, brands are placing greater attention on comfort, craftsmanship and versatile clothes.

Balenciaga’s new collection responded to that environment without abandoning experimentation. Piccioli continued to use unusual proportions, strong colour combinations and carefully constructed garments.

The collection showed his growing relationship with Balenciaga’s history. Cristóbal Balenciaga was known for innovative construction and sculptural silhouettes, which Piccioli referenced through modern clothing.

Still, Piccioli is not simply repeating the past. Instead, he is combining historic techniques with pieces that people already recognise and wear, including denim, T-shirts, shirts and tailored trousers.

That balance has become central to his work at the house. Since arriving at Balenciaga, he has gradually moved between couture, everyday clothing and dramatic eveningwear.

His latest collection continues that process. It suggests that he wants Balenciaga to remain experimental while making its clothes feel lighter and more approachable.

The setting reinforced that message. The bright runway created a clean environment where clothes remained the main focus.

The coral-inspired installation added another layer to the presentation. It connected the fashion collection with ideas about community, nature and protection.

Meanwhile, the front row included several notable guests. Vogue and Reuters reported appearances by Anna Wintour, Kering chairman François-Henri Pinault and other fashion and entertainment figures.

The show also marked another step in Piccioli’s first full year at Balenciaga. He has continued to establish how he wants the house to look under his leadership.

His Spring/Summer 2027 presentation therefore combined several elements. It brought couture techniques into ordinary garments, introduced softer footwear, expanded the use of colour and explored new proportions.

More importantly, it showed a designer trying to balance Balenciaga’s past with its future. Piccioli respected the house’s couture heritage while developing clothes that fit contemporary wardrobes.

The collection also showed that luxury does not always depend on oversized shapes or visible branding. Construction, fabric, colour and movement can create impact.

As Paris Fashion Week continues, Balenciaga’s latest collection stands out as an important chapter in Piccioli’s developing story at the house.

For Spring/Summer 2027, he presented fashion that moves between the extraordinary and familiar. Couture techniques elevated everyday pieces, while dramatic gowns kept the collection connected to high fashion.

Ultimately, Piccioli’s Balenciaga continues to take shape through that balance. The latest collection places craftsmanship at the centre while giving familiar clothes new energy, movement and personality.
