Lagos —

The Leprosy Mission Nigeria is set to invest ₦228.3 million in a new livelihood programme aimed at helping 180 persons affected by leprosy and persons with disabilities build sustainable sources of income across five states and the Federal Capital Territory.

The intervention, which begins in October 2026, will cover 20 communities in Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Sokoto and the FCT. Beneficiaries will receive vocational training, enterprise management support, digital technology skills and start-up assistance.

The programme is designed to address a major challenge facing many vulnerable people: having a skill does not always mean having the opportunity or resources to turn that skill into a sustainable livelihood.

For persons affected by leprosy and persons with disabilities, barriers such as stigma, limited access to finance, restricted employment opportunities and difficulty reaching markets can make economic independence more difficult.

The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, therefore, is taking an approach that goes beyond traditional skills training.

Rather than simply teaching beneficiaries a trade, the organisation plans to combine vocational skills with business development, digital knowledge and start-up support.

The aim is to help participants move from acquiring skills to actually using those skills to establish or strengthen businesses.

National Director of The Leprosy Mission Nigeria, Dr Sunday Udo, said the objective is to create pathways through which beneficiaries can build sustainable livelihoods, participate more fully in their communities and achieve greater economic independence.

This focus on economic independence is important because long-term empowerment requires more than temporary assistance.

A person may know how to sew, produce food, repair equipment or provide another service, but without access to capital, customers and business knowledge, it can remain difficult to earn a dependable income.

The new programme seeks to close some of those gaps.

Beneficiaries will receive practical vocational training while also learning how to manage enterprises and use digital technology.

The digital component is particularly relevant as more businesses now depend on online communication, digital marketing and technology to reach customers.

For small business owners in rural communities, the ability to promote products through digital platforms could help them reach customers beyond their immediate neighbourhoods.

It could also give people with disabilities more flexible ways to participate in economic activities.

However, digital access alone is not enough. Beneficiaries will also require practical business knowledge, including pricing, record keeping, customer relations and reinvestment.

The enterprise management component of the programme is expected to provide this additional support.

The initiative is part of a four-year programme being implemented by The Leprosy Mission Nigeria in collaboration with The Leprosy Mission Sweden, with funding support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, known as Sida.

Community participation is another important part of the intervention.

According to the organisation, beneficiaries were identified from communities where it is already working to strengthen inclusion, livelihoods, resilience and community participation.

Local community structures and stakeholders are also being involved in the implementation process.

This approach could help ensure that the programme responds to the realities of the communities rather than operating as an isolated intervention.

It can also encourage local ownership and improve the chances that the benefits will continue after the formal training period.

The 20 communities covered by the programme span six locations: Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Sokoto and the FCT.

This geographical spread means that the intervention will reach beneficiaries living in different social and economic environments.

Despite those differences, the need for inclusive economic opportunities remains a common concern.

For persons affected by leprosy, social stigma can sometimes create additional barriers to employment and community participation.

Similarly, persons with disabilities may face physical, financial or social obstacles that limit their access to education, employment and entrepreneurship.

Economic empowerment can therefore play an important role in changing how vulnerable people participate in their communities.

When individuals can earn an income and run businesses, they are better positioned to make decisions about their households and contribute to the wider economy.

The programme also reflects a broader shift in conversations around disability inclusion.

Instead of viewing people with disabilities only through the lens of vulnerability or assistance, inclusive development increasingly focuses on skills, rights, participation and economic opportunity.

For the 180 beneficiaries, the programme could provide a practical pathway towards that goal.

However, its long-term impact will depend on what happens after the training.

Access to markets, continued mentorship, appropriate start-up support and the ability to overcome everyday business challenges will all influence whether beneficiaries can sustain their enterprises.

The Leprosy Mission Nigeria has said the intervention is intended to help beneficiaries establish or strengthen livelihood activities and expand their access to markets and customers.

That focus on markets is significant because producing goods or offering services is only one part of running a successful business.

Entrepreneurs must also be able to find customers, promote what they offer and generate enough income to keep their businesses operating.

Digital skills could support this process by helping beneficiaries advertise their products and services and communicate with potential customers.

At the community level, successful businesses could also create wider benefits.

As beneficiaries expand their enterprises, they may employ others, purchase supplies locally and contribute to economic activity within their communities.

The intervention could therefore benefit more people than the 180 individuals directly selected for support.

For the communities involved, the programme represents an opportunity to strengthen inclusion while addressing some of the economic barriers faced by vulnerable groups.

For the beneficiaries themselves, it offers a chance to build livelihoods based on skills, enterprise and greater access to economic resources.

As the programme begins in October, attention will turn to how effectively the training and support translate into real businesses and sustainable income.

The true measure of success will not simply be the number of people trained.

It will be whether beneficiaries can use the skills, digital knowledge and start-up support to build businesses, reach customers, earn income and participate more fully in their communities.

For 180 people across 20 communities, the initiative could become an important step towards greater economic independence and a more inclusive local economy.
