• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

The shocking ordeal the abducted activist found fighting for life in Zamfara began on an ordinary Monday morning in Sokoto state.

Just like the usuals, the sun rose when Hamdiyya Sidi Shariff, a fiery 26 year old activist, stepped out to buy a few food items, coincidentally on the plane of no return.

Her disappearance on 20 May 2025 quickly spiralled into a national emergency, with hashtags trending and human rights groups sounding alarms.

Fast forward a few tense days, and a chilling discovery has thrown the nation into shock.

Her case drew sharp criticism from human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, which condemned the actions of the Sokoto authorities as a violation of her constitutional rights.

Found, Barely Alive

Hamdiyya was found, literally not in Sokoto, not even in the neighbouring town but in the General Hospital of Bakura, a remote part of Zamfara State.

She wasn’t conscious as expected, her body; battered and frail, told its own story before any words could be uttered.

According to her lawyer from Abba Hikima & Co., the activist had been abducted, and there was no ambiguity about it.

She was being watched over by security operatives, but the reasons why she ended up in a hospital far from home remain murky.

The image of her lying unconscious, almost lifeless in a hospital bed has sent shockwaves across social media. Was this a warning? Or was it something far more sinister?

Silenced for Speaking Out

Just days before her disappearance, Hamdiyya had been preparing to face court. Her “crime”? Posting critical comments on social media about Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s leadership.

Hamdiyya Sidi Sharif, as an activist from Sokoto State, Nigeria, has become a symbol in the struggle for freedom of expression and political accountability in the country.

Her story began in late 2024 when she posted a TikTok video criticizing Sokoto State Governor Ahmad Aliyu for his government’s failure to support internally displaced persons (IDPs).

She was charged with “insulting or abusive language” and “inciting disturbance” terms that critics argue are increasingly used to silence dissent.

She was expected to appear before a magistrate on 21 May. When she didn’t show up, friends, family, and supporters feared the worst. And they were right to.

This wasn’t the first time Hamdiyya had faced backlash for speaking truth to power. Only months ago, she reported being physically attacked by unidentified men after a fiery Instagram live session where she called out poor governance and rising insecurity in Sokoto.

A Growing Pattern of Intimidation

Sadly, Hamdiyya’s story isn’t an isolated niche,  across Nigeria, there’s a growing pattern: young voices challenging the status quo, only to be met with threats, intimidation or beyond.

Civil society organisations have long warned of shrinking civic space.

But this incident has jolted the nation in a way few others have.

“I still remember her saying, ‘If I die, tell them I lived standing,’” recalls her university friend, Amina, who spoke to Morganable. “She was never afraid, but we always feared this day would come.”

The Legal Fallout Begins

With Hamdiyya now in critical condition, her legal team is gearing up for more than just defending her against spurious charges, but also, they’re demanding justice for her abduction and answers about who’s behind the act.

“This wasn’t random,” her lawyer said in a press conference on Sunday. To them; The timing, the location, the brutality, all points, spotlight to a targeted operation, the aim to pursue every legal channel to uncover the truth.”

Calls for an independent investigation have also been echoed by Amnesty International, which has described the case as “a glaring example of state-enabled repression.”

Why This Matters, Now, More Than Ever

At its heart, this is more than just a story about one young woman. It’s about the right to speak, to protest, to challenge authority without fear of violence or death.

It’s about Nigeria’s future; whether it will be shaped by courageous voices like Hamdiyya’s or silenced by fear.

Her story is triggering conversations in schools, churches, mosques, and even motor parks.

In Lagos, a group of university students held a candlelight vigil. In Abuja, a protest was broken up by police before it could even begin. Across X (formerly Twitter), the hashtags #JusticeForHamdiyya, #ProtectActivists, and #EndImpunity is gaining steam all over.

One particularly moving post read: “If Hamdiyya survives, it won’t just be her life saved—it’ll be the soul of our democracy.”

What Happens Next?

Right now, Hamdiyya remains in intensive care.

Her family has asked for privacy but has expressed most gratitude for the outpouring of support, though her first 72 hours after being found, was critical as lamented by Medical experts taking care of her.

Meanwhile, advocacy groups are calling for increased protection for activists across Nigeria. “This cannot happen again,” says Eno Adewale of the Centre for Civil Liberty. “Hamdiyya must not become just another statistic in a long list of voices snuffed out.”

For now, the country waits not just for her recovery but, for reckoning her story demands.

The right to speak, to protest, to challenge authority without fear…..
