  • Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Public power, representation and democratic consequence

Reclaiming the true purpose of Northern politics means putting the needs and interest of the people above those of politicians.

Politics in Northern Nigeria has become a game of personal benefit. The needs of the people are often left in the shadows while politicians accumulate wealth and power.

This selfishness, which has endured for decades, has led to a situation where many in the north live in poverty and despair, despite the vast resources at the disposal of their leaders.

The true essence of politics is to serve the people, not to enrich oneself or one’s family.

It is a vocation that demands selflessness, sacrifice, and a commitment.  It must improve the lives of those who elect you.

Sadly, this fundamental principle seems to have been lost on many northern politicians.

For far too long, the political elite in the north have prioritized their personal gain over the wellbeing of their communities.

Rather than working to uplift their people, many have transformed their own constituents into beggars, dependent.

This distorted view of politics is not just harmful, it’s dangerous.

When politicians use their positions for personal enrichment, they forget their duty to the people who entrusted them with power.

Northern politician fails to invest in the essential sectors like education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure. These can transform the lives of millions.

Instead, resources are misappropriated, and the poor get poorer, while the politicians and their families live in luxury.

The unfortunate reality is that many politicians in the north have become more focused on amassing wealth. They no longer serve the very people who put them in power.

Their children are to study in foreign universities, while local schools are in disrepair.

Politicians secure medical treatment abroad, while hospitals in their communities remain underfunded and understaffed. Most live in palatial estates, while the roads that connect rural areas are filled with potholes.

This is the grim picture of a region that is rich in resources but poor in leadership.

One of the most glaring consequences of this corruption is the decline in the quality of education and healthcare in the northern region.

Many children in rural areas are denied the opportunity to go to school, while those in urban centers are subjected to subpar education.

Reclaiming The True Purpose Of Politics

Education in the North

The northern elites often send their children abroad for studies. The schools back home lacks basic infrastructure and teaching materials.

This creates a cycle of inequality where only the privileged few, have access to the opportunities that could lift them out of poverty.

Healthcare in the North

In healthcare, the situation is equally dire. Politicians who should be working to improve the local healthcare system often seek treatment abroad.

They leave the local hospitals to suffer from inadequate equipment and understaffing.

The people who rely on these healthcare facilities (The masses) are often left to die from preventable diseases.

Instead of investing in the improvement of local hospitals and healthcare infrastructure, many politicians seem to be more concerned with amassing wealth for themselves and their families.

This lack of investment in critical sectors such as education and healthcare have long-term effects on the region’s development.

The north remains plagued by poverty and underdevelopment. This requires urgent attention and action.

Many are unable to break free from the shackles of neglect and mismanagement.

Politicians who should be serving the public are instead living in a world of luxury, far removed from the struggles of the common man.

The essence of politics is about service, not selfishness.

It is about meeting the basic needs of the people. It is ensuring that every citizen, regardless of their background, has access to quality education, healthcare, security, and opportunities for a better life.

When politicians mismanage these resources, they not only fail the people. They also betray the very principles of democracy and good governance.

Northern Nigeria cannot afford to continue on this path.

It is time for a change. Politicians in the region must understand that their roles come with the responsibility to bring positive change.

They must shift their focus from personal gain to the collective good.

Northern politicians must begin to prioritize the improvement of basic infrastructure, such as roads, hospitals, and schools.

Reclaiming The True Purpose Of Politics

Policymakers must strengthen the healthcare system. Politicians do not need to travel abroad for basic medical treatment.

Also, education must be accessible to every child, not just the privileged few. Security must be paramount, so that people can live in peace and without fear for their lives.

Politicians in the north must come to terms with the fact that the people are watching.

They are watching as their leaders continue to squander public resources for personal benefit, while their communities suffer.

The people are calling for change and an end to neglect. They will not stand idly by, while their leaders continue to exploit them.

These changes won’t come about, until the politicians in the north recognize the urgent need for reform.

They must abandon their self-serving tendencies and put the people first.

In conclusion, it is not too late for northern politicians to change course. They can still make a real difference by embracing the true essence of politics, service to the people.

It is time to move beyond the politics of selfishness and corruption and work towards a brighter future for all.

Northern Nigeria is full of potential, and with the right leadership, it can become a model of progress and prosperity.

This can only happen when politicians understand that their role is not to enrich themselves. It is to enrich the lives of the people they serve. Let us reclaim the essence of politics to serve, not to steal.

It’s time for northern politicians to rise to the occasion, embrace their responsibilities, and help create a future where their people can thrive, not just survive.
