  • Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

Prioritizing preventive care in Nigeria is essential for reducing the risks of chronic diseases and improving overall health outcomes.

In recent years, Nigeria has faced numerous health challenges from infectious diseases to non-communicable illnesses.

The burden of these health issues has strained our healthcare system, leading to increased mortality rates and diminished quality of life for many citizens.

However, there is a solution that can significantly improve the health landscape of our nation; prioritizing preventive care.

By shifting our focus from reactive treatment to proactive prevention we can pave the way for healthier Nigeria.

First and foremost, it is essential to understand what preventive care entails.

Preventive care, also known as preventive medicine includes a range of services designed to prevent illness before they occur.

Prioritizing Preventive Care In Nigeria

This encompasses vaccinations, regular health screening, health education and lifestyle counseling.

By investing in these services, we can reduce the incidence of diseases, lower healthcare costs, and ultimately enhance the quality of life for Nigerians.

One of the major benefits of preventive care is its cost- effectiveness.

In a study published by the World Health Organization (WHO), it was found that every dollar invested in immunization can yield a return of up to $44 in economic benefits.

This is because immunization can prevent illness that require expensive treatment or cause loss of productivity.

Currently, Nigeria spends a significant portion of its healthcare budget on treating diseases rather than preventing them.

By allocating resources towards preventive measures, we can alleviate the financial strain on our healthcare system.

This will ensure that funds are available for other critical areas, such as infrastructure and medical research.

Prioritizing Preventive Care In Nigeria

In the long run, investing in preventive care can save Nigerians millions of dollars in healthcare expenses.

Moreover, preventive care can also lead to healthier and more productive population.

Regular checkups and screening can detect diseases at early stage when they are easier and less expensive to treat.

This not only improves the chances of successful treatment but also reduces the risk of serious complications.

Prioritizing preventive care also means promoting a culture of wellness and healthy living.

Healthy citizens are more likely to be employed and contribute positively to the economy, leading to a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria.

Encouraging individuals to make healthy lifestyle choices such as maintaining a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding harmful habits can significantly reduce the risks of chronic diseases such as diabetics, hypertension, and heart diseases.

By instilling these habits from a young age, we can create a generation of healthier and happier Nigerians.

In addition to individual health benefits, preventive care can also have a positive impact on the environment.

Vaccinations and regular check-ups can help prevent the spread of infectious diseases, thereby reducing the impact on the environment.

This is especially important in densely populated areas where diseases can spread quickly.

Prioritizing Preventive Care In Nigeria

Also, preventive care can significantly improve public health outcomes. For instance, vaccination programs have proven to be one of the most effective ways to prevent infectious diseases.

In Nigeria, diseases such as measles and polio have seen a resurgence due to low vaccination rates.

By prioritizing immunization campaigns and ensuring that all children receive vaccination, we can protect our population from theses preventive diseases.

Despite the clear benefits of preventive care, the majority of Nigerians do not have access to it.

According to WHO, only 36% of Nigerians have access to basic healthcare services.

This highlights the urgent need for the government and healthcare providers to make preventive care a priority.

In order to make preventive care accessible to all, a collaborative effort is required.

The government needs to allocate adequate resources towards preventive care services, including immunization, regular check-ups and screening tests.

A robust primary healthcare system is the backbone of effective preventive care.

Nigeria government must prioritize the strengthening of primary healthcare facilities, ensuring they are well-equipped and staffed with trained professionals.

Prioritizing Preventive Care In Nigeria

In addition, healthcare providers must educate and encourage individuals to take advantage of these services.

Many Nigerians are unaware of the importance of regular health check-ups and healthy living.

The government, in collaboration with NGOs and community leaders, should launch comprehensive public health campaigns to educate citizens about the benefits of preventive care.

Community outreach programs and health campaigns also play a crucial role in creating this awareness and promoting preventive care.

These campaigns should be culturally sensitive and accessible, utilizing local languages and media platforms to reach diverse population.

Furthermore, investing in preventive care also requires a cultural shift in mindset on how we view health and wellness.

Traditionally, many individuals have relied on reactive healthcare, seeking medical attention when they are already ill.

This mindset must change. We need to foster a culture that values health education and encourages individuals to take charge of their well-being.

It is important to understand that preventive care is not a luxury, but a necessity.

Regular screening is essential for maintaining good health and catching any potential health issues before they become serious.

Prioritizing Preventive Care In Nigeria

In conclusion, prioritizing preventive care is key to a healthier Nigeria. It is time for the government, healthcare providers, and individuals to come together and make preventive care a top priority.

This mindset shift can go a long way in improving the health of Nigerians.

Let us work towards a brighter and healthier future for our nation.
