The Nigeria Police Force has unveiled plans to develop a comprehensive security roadmap ahead of the 2027 general elections, as part of efforts to strengthen electoral integrity and prevent violence across the country.
The initiative will take centre stage at the sixth edition of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers (CARSPO 2026), scheduled to hold from September 21 to 23, 2026, in Owerri, Imo State.
The three-day conference, organised in collaboration with Lenders Consult International, is expected to bring together senior police officers, security experts, and key stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for effective election security management.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the conference is themed “Developing a Nigeria Police Roadmap for Effective Management of Security During Elections.”
The retreat, he noted, would provide a platform for high-level discussions on emerging security threats and innovative policing approaches ahead of the polls.
Iniedu explained that participants at the conference would include officers from the rank of Commissioner of Police and above, alongside experts in security, governance, and technology.
“The conference will serve as a strategic forum to examine emerging electoral security challenges and develop actionable frameworks to guide police operations before, during, and after the elections,” the statement read. “Key areas of focus will include the protection of voters, electoral officials, candidates, election materials, and the general public.”
The opening ceremony of the conference is scheduled to commence at 10 a.m. on Monday, September 21, in Owerri, with top-ranking officers and stakeholders expected to attend.
Initiative Aims At Strengthening Professionalism
The planned retreat comes at a time when political activities are gradually intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections. The Independent National Electoral Commission has already released a revised timetable, fixing the Presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027.
Under the timetable, campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections are expected to commence on August 19, 2026, while those for governorship and state assembly elections will begin on September 9. Political parties are also required to conclude their campaigns 24 hours before the respective election days.
With the commencement of campaigns imminent, major political parties have begun ramping up activities, including consultations, grassroots mobilisation, coalition-building, and the strengthening of party structures nationwide.
The ruling All Progressives Congress, alongside opposition parties such as the Peoples Democratic Party, African Democratic Congress, and Nigeria Democratic Congress, have intensified preparations to mobilise supporters and position themselves strategically for the polls.
The build-up to the elections has also heightened concerns over electoral security, particularly in relation to the protection of voters and electoral officials, as well as the prevention of violence, voter intimidation, and disruptions to the electoral process.
Timely Planning Crucial To Mitigating Risks
Security analysts have repeatedly stressed the importance of early planning and coordination among security agencies to mitigate risks associated with elections in Nigeria, where past polls have often been marred by incidents of violence and malpractice.
Against this backdrop, the CARSPO 2026 conference is expected to play a critical role in shaping the police’s approach to election security by identifying potential threats and outlining strategies to address them.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Lenders Consult International, Shina Philips, reaffirmed his organisation’s commitment to supporting the Nigeria Police Force in its efforts to secure the electoral process.
“As a private organisation, Lenders Consult International is committed to strengthening our strategic partnership with the Nigeria Police as they prepare to provide adequate security during the 2027 general elections,” he said.
He emphasised that the role of the police in ensuring a credible electoral process cannot be overstated, noting that stability during elections largely depends on the effectiveness of the Force.
Quoting the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, Philips said, “The stability of the electoral process largely depends on the Police as the lead agency in internal security and democratic processes.”
“Since inception, when we first got approval to organise the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, we have worked to secure sponsorship for every single edition. We consider this our contribution to support the selfless and patriotic work of the Nigeria Police,” he stated.
Conference Attracting International Participants
He also noted that the conference has grown in scope and influence over the years, attracting international participants and evolving into a platform for sharing global best practices in policing.
“Our vision for the Conference and Retreat has expanded as it continues to attract international participants. Nigeria, as the giant of Africa, is taking the lead in adopting modern policing methods, and we are committed to ensuring that the conference remains focused on delivering cutting-edge solutions,” Philips added.
Observers say the success of the 2027 elections will depend largely on the ability of security agencies, particularly the police, to maintain neutrality, respond promptly to threats, and collaborate effectively with other stakeholders.
They also emphasise the need for continuous training, improved logistics, and the adoption of technology-driven solutions to enhance surveillance, intelligence gathering, and rapid response during elections.
As preparations gather momentum, the upcoming CARSPO 2026 conference is expected to provide a crucial opportunity for the Nigeria Police Force to refine its strategies and reinforce its commitment to ensuring peaceful, credible, and secure elections in 2027.
