Nigerian artists dominated the 2026 AFRIMMA Awards, with Davido, Tems, BNXN, Phyno and other stars securing major honours at the ceremony in Dallas, Texas.

Nigerian music stars recorded a strong showing at the 2026 African Muzik Magazine Awards (AFRIMMA), with Davido, Tems, Ruger, Phyno and several other Nigerian artistes emerging among the major winners at the ceremony held in Dallas, Texas.
The awards, which took place on September 12, returned after a two-year break and recognised artists and entertainers from across Africa and the diaspora in 41 categories. The results continued to receive widespread attention in Nigeria in the days following the ceremony.
Davido led Nigeria’s biggest individual wins after his fifth studio album, 5ive, received the Album of the Year award. The album, released in April 2025, features collaborations with international and Nigerian acts, including Chris Brown, Victoria Monét, Becky G, Omah Lay and Victony.
The award was particularly notable because Davido entered the ceremony as the leading Nigerian nominee, with five nominations across major categories. However, he did not win Artist of the Year, which went to Congolese star Fally Ipupa. Ipupa also received the Crossing Boundaries with Music Award.
Another major Nigerian victory came from singer BNXN and producer Sarz, whose collaboration Back Outside won Song of the Year. The recognition highlighted the contribution of both singers and producers to the growth and development of African music.
Meanwhile, Grammy-winning singer Tems won Best Female West Africa, while Ruger received the Best Male West Africa award. Their wins added to Nigeria’s strong representation in the regional categories.
The awards also recognised Nigeria’s strength across different music genres. Rapper Phyno won Best Male Rap Act, while gospel singer Mercy Chinwo received the Best Gospel award. Rising singer Fola was named Best Newcomer, marking another important recognition for Nigeria’s emerging music talent.
In addition, DJ Tunez won Best DJ Africa, while Patoranking received the Best Male Reggae/Dancehall award. Producer London was named Music Producer of the Year, and Director Pink won Best Video Director. Victony also received the AFRIMMA Fans Choice Award.
Nigeria’s representation extended beyond music. Real Warri Pikin won Best Comedian, Uche Montana received Best Actor/Actress, while footballer Victor Osimhen was named Athlete of the Year. These awards reflected the wider contribution of Nigerian entertainers and public figures to African popular culture.
The 2026 edition also marked a new direction for AFRIMMA. Organisers combined the awards ceremony with the first AFRIMMA Music Festival in Dallas. The event brought together artists, DJs, performers, food vendors and fashion brands, creating a broader celebration of African culture. According to AFRIMMA, the festival attracted about 5,000 attendees, more than 100 artists and DJs, and participants from over 40 African countries.
The strong performance by Nigerian artists comes as Afrobeats continues to gain international recognition. Nigerian musicians now regularly collaborate with artists from other countries, perform on international stages and contribute to the growing global interest in African music.
Although Nigerian artists collected numerous awards, the night also highlighted the diversity of African music. Artists from countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Tanzania, South Africa and Jamaica also received major honours. Fally Ipupa’s Artist of the Year award and the collaboration award won by Diamond Platnumz and Juma Jux demonstrated the broad range of talent represented at the ceremony.
For Nigerian music fans and the wider African music community, AFRIMMA 2026 provided another platform for celebrating established stars while recognising emerging voices. The results also demonstrated the variety of Nigerian music, with Afrobeats, rap, gospel, reggae and dancehall artists all receiving recognition.
As African music continues to cross international borders, the achievements of Nigerian artists at AFRIMMA 2026 underline the country’s continuing presence in the continent’s entertainment industry.
