Akure —
The New York Times Company is in exclusive negotiations to acquire Letterboxd, the social platform for film lovers, in a deal valued at about $330 million.
Reports published on November 5 and 6, 2026, said the media company had emerged as the leading potential buyer.
However, the two companies have not announced a final agreement. The reported price therefore remains part of ongoing discussions, not a completed transaction. The talks could still change or end without a deal.
The service has attracted a large audience, particularly younger users. Reports put its user base at about 30 million.
Members follow friends, filmmakers and critics, publish reviews, and explore lists covering different genres, countries and periods. Letterboxd has therefore become more than a film catalogue.
It also shapes conversations around new releases, independent productions and older classics.
The reported $330 million valuation is significant when compared with the platform’s expected earnings.
The New York Times report placed Letterboxd’s projected earnings for 2026 at about $15 million. That would put the proposed price at more than 20 times the expected figure.
The valuation suggests that the potential buyer sees value in the platform’s audience, brand and influence, as well as its financial performance.
Tiny acquired a 60 per cent stake in Letterboxd in 2023, in a transaction that reportedly valued the business at between $50 million and $60 million. The platform’s founders retained the remaining 40 per cent.
The proposed $330 million deal would therefore represent a substantial rise from that earlier valuation. However, the final price, ownership structure and terms have not been confirmed publicly.
A WIDER DIGITAL STRATEGY
The potential purchase would support the New York Times Company’s efforts to expand beyond traditional journalism.
The publisher has built a portfolio of digital products that includes The Athletic, Wirecutter and Wordle. Each acquisition has added a different audience and service to its business.
The Athletic strengthened the company’s sports coverage and subscription offering. Wirecutter expanded its product review and shopping advice business, while Wordle brought a widely played word game to its portfolio.
Letterboxd would add a dedicated film community, giving the company another way to reach people who may not regularly visit its news products.
The strategy matters as media organisations compete for attention and recurring digital revenue. Readers now use a wide range of services for news, entertainment, games and recommendations.
By owning products that serve different interests, the Times Company can reach more audiences and encourage existing subscribers to use more of its services.
The company reported 13.8 million paid subscribers after adding 420,000 digital-only subscribers in the third quarter, according to reports. It has also set a target of reaching 15 million subscribers by the end of 2027.
A Letterboxd acquisition could support that ambition, although it is not yet clear whether the platform would become part of a combined subscription package.
Advertising could provide another reason for the deal. Reports say the Times Company plans to connect its advertising technology with Letterboxd’s systems.
This could help the publisher offer advertisers access to a broader range of digital audiences.
It may also create new commercial opportunities around film releases, reviews and entertainment-related interests.
However, the platform’s identity will be important to its future. Letterboxd has built its reputation around member reviews, personal film diaries and recommendations.
Its community values the freedom to discuss movies in its own way. If a new owner changes the service too quickly, it could weaken the qualities that helped it attract users.
For that reason, Letterboxd is expected to continue operating as a standalone platform for now if the deal proceeds.
This approach could allow it to retain its existing features while gaining access to the Times Company’s resources and commercial experience. Still, neither company has confirmed the precise plans for its operations.
WHAT THE DEAL COULD MEAN
The potential acquisition also reflects the growing value of online communities to established media businesses. A platform with an active and loyal audience can offer more than advertising space.
It can provide insight into user interests, support new products and create opportunities to build lasting relationships with customers.
For the film industry, a change in ownership could give Letterboxd access to greater resources and a wider commercial network.
The platform could potentially expand its reach, improve its services and develop new partnerships. Yet any growth strategy would need to respect the community that made it successful.
The deal could also raise questions about independence and editorial influence. Letterboxd is not a conventional film publication.
Its members contribute personal opinions, and its appeal depends on the variety of voices on the platform. The Times Company would need to protect that open environment while developing the business.
For now, the reported $330 million price remains subject to negotiations. No final agreement, closing date or detailed transition plan has been announced.
The companies may provide more information if they reach an agreement, but the current reports do not confirm that a sale will happen.
If completed, the transaction would mark another major step in the Times Company’s expansion into digital services.
It would also place one of the internet’s best-known film communities within a large media group with a growing range of subscription products.
The challenge will be to combine commercial growth with the independence and community spirit that define Letterboxd.
Ultimately, the talks show why established publishers are looking beyond traditional news products.
Digital audiences increasingly gather around shared interests, from sports and shopping to games and cinema. Letterboxd offers the Times Company access to one such community.
Whether the reported acquisition becomes reality will depend on the outcome of negotiations and the terms both sides accept.
