• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

New Orleans Attack: Biden, Trump react as investigation ongoing on the horrific New Year’s Day attack

Following the deadly attack on New Orleans on the New Year’s Day, United States President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump have both reacted.

On Wednesday, 1st January, 2025, President Joe Biden described the incident as “horrific” and stated that preliminary investigation is being carried to ascertain if the attack was an act of terrorism.

Biden also indicated that there nothing to justify the attack in which he described the “horrific” attack early hour of yesterday in New Orleans.

He disclosed that Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into the attack to ascertain if it was a terrorist attack.

In a written statement, Biden said: “I have been continually briefed since early this morning by federal law enforcement leadership and my homeland security team, including Secretary of Homeland Security Ali Mayorkas, Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco, White House Homeland Security Advisor Liz Sherwood-Randall, and the Mayor of New Orleans regarding the horrific incident that occurred there overnight.”

The attack claimed, at least, fifteen lives and twenty-five people were reported to have sustained various degrees of injury after a vehicle rammed into a gathered crowd on Bourbon Street, authorities disclosed.

Police statement reads that the driver was on-course to inflict damage as he was spotted driving recklessly in the early morning hours on Wednesday.

Subsequently, the driver came out of the vehicle, holding an assault weapon, which led him to being shot and killed by officers.

Speaking to reporters on the New Year’s Day, before boarding Air Force One, en route to Maryland, at Delaware Air National Guard Base in New Castle in Delaware.

“I am grateful for the brave and swift response of local law enforcement in preventing even greater death and injury,” Biden said.

“I have directed my team to ensure every resource is available as federal, state, and local law enforcement work assiduously to get to the bottom of what happened as quickly as possible and to ensure that there is no remaining threat of any kind.”

“I will continue to receive updates throughout the day, and I will have more to say as we have further information to share.

The US president added, “In the meantime, my heart goes out to the victims and their families who were simply trying to celebrate the holiday.”

“There is no justification for violence of any kind, and we will not tolerate any attack on any of our nation’s communities.”

Biden gave a short speech on the attack as he left Delaware for Camp David, though he refused to give vivid description of the suspect’s identity.

“I’ve contacted every agency in the federal government, as well as the state. They’re all coordinating to get−get to the bare facts,” he said.

The suspect’s identity was subsequently revealed by FBI to be Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, from Texas.

Further investigations are being intensified to ascertain if the killed suspect had any tie with terrorist organization after an ISIS flag was seen in his vehicle, the FBI revealed.

The United States President said that his first reaction to the horrific attack was “one of anger and frustration” and he hinted that later, he would have more to say.

On the other hand, Donald Trump, the United States president-elect, has bemoaned that attacks, describing it as “pure evil.”

“Our hearts are with all of the innocent victims and their loved ones, including the brave officers of the New Orleans Police Department.

“The Trump Administration will fully support the City of New Orleans as they investigate and recover from this act of pure evil!” Trump wrote in a social media post.

“When I said that the criminals coming in are far worse than the criminals we have in our country, that statement was constantly refuted by Democrats and the Fake News Media, but it turned out to be true,” Trump said, hours before the FBI identified the suspect as a U.S. citizen from Texas.

In the statement of Mike Johnson on his verified X account, the United States House Speaker, a native of Louisiana, also described that attack as “pure evil”

“The vicious attack on innocent people celebrating the New Year in New Orleans early this morning was an act of pure evil, and justice must be swift for anyone who was involved.”

“Please join us in praying for the victims, their families, and the first responders and investigators on the scene.”

Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy, who is also a member of Republican Party, called the attack “tragic” but gave a thumb-up to the Sugar Bowl−a yearly college football game played on New Year’s Day in New Orleans−to go on amidst the tragedy.

“The terrorists win if we don’t live our lives. We must live our lives. Otherwise, one more time, they win and they can’t win.

“We’ve got to track them down, we’ve got to hunt them down, we’ve got to find out their supporting network, and we’ve got to bring them to justice,” Cassidy said.

A few hours after Cassidy’s speech, a New Orleans’ official indicated the postponement of the match until Thursday.

Troy Carter, a Democratic Representative in Louisiana, whose legislative jurisdiction extends to New Orleans, revealed that he had conversation with the White House and with DHS secretary Mayorkas on the attack.

Carter sent condolences to the families of the victims and said that his heart is with them.

“As we continue to learn more about this tragedy, including the motive behind such senseless violence, I am committed to working with local and federal authorities to ensure justice for the victims and to strengthen measures that safeguard our communities against acts of terror,” Carter stated.

This is just the preamble to the “New Year’s Day” New Orleans attack story.
