• Tinubu Urges Plateau State Governor to Include Hausa/Fulani in his Cabinet, and also Recognize Them as Indigenes

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on political leaders in Plateau State to embrace inclusive governance by appointing members of the Hausa/Fulani community to key positions in the state government and recognizing them as indigenes of the state.

The President made the remarks during a high-level dialogue meeting with political, traditional, and religious leaders at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Addressing participants at the meeting, Tinubu stressed that sustainable peace and development in Plateau State require fairness, inclusion, and equal opportunities for all communities.

  • Goldman Sachs Lowers 2027 Brent Oil Price Forecast Over Supply Growth, Demand Risks

Goldman Sachs has reduced its forecast for Brent crude oil prices in 2027, citing expectations of increased global oil supply and growing concerns over weaker demand.

The investment bank said rising production from major oil-producing countries, coupled with uncertainties surrounding global economic growth, could place downward pressure on oil prices in the coming years.

Analysts noted that slower economic activity in key markets and the increasing adoption of alternative energy sources may affect long-term demand for crude oil.

The revised outlook comes as energy markets continue to monitor geopolitical developments, production policies by major exporters, and changing consumption patterns worldwide.

Lagos’ Economic Boom: Why Refuge Island Remains Forgotten despite the city’s rapid transformation into Nigeria’s financial powerhouse.

Lagos has become a beacon of economic progress, attracting local and foreign investors while witnessing massive infrastructural expansion.

However, amid this rapid growth, some communities remain neglected, struggling to access basic amenities.

One such place is Refuge Island, an overlooked part of Lagos where development is stagnated despite the city’s economic success.

While areas like Victoria Island, Lekki, and Ikoyi thrive with high-end real estate, luxury businesses, and world-class infrastructure, Refuge Island presents a stark contrast.

Residents live without stable electricity, good roads, healthcare, or quality education, making survival a daily challenge.

This article explores the challenges facing Refuge Island, the reasons behind its exclusion from Lagos’ development plan, and possible solutions to bridge the gap between the city’s wealth and its forgotten communities.

The Harsh Reality of Life on Refuge Island

Refuge Island’s residents are cut off from the economic prosperity Lagos enjoys. While the city is celebrated as a hub for innovation and commerce, basic services are absent in this part of town.

1. Lack of Infrastructure

There are no proper roads, making transportation difficult. During the rainy season, movement becomes nearly impossible due to flooding and muddy pathways.

Electricity is unstable, forcing residents to rely on expensive generators or remain in darkness.

Clean water is a luxury, as the community lacks a functional water supply system, leaving residents dependent on unsafe sources.

2. Limited Access to Healthcare and Education

There are few to no schools in the area, forcing children to travel long distances for education.

The absence of healthcare centers means residents struggle to receive medical attention, leading to high infant mortality rates and preventable deaths.

3. Economic Struggles and Social Issues

Without business opportunities, unemployment is rampant. Many residents depend on informal, low-paying jobs.

Poverty levels are high, making it difficult for families to afford decent housing, food, and other necessities.

Crime and insecurity are growing concerns, as the lack of government intervention creates a breeding ground for illegal activities.

Despite Lagos’ reputation as an economic powerhouse, Refuge Island remains in a cycle of poverty, disconnected from the city’s development.

Lagos’s Economic Boom: Why Refuge Island Remains Forgotten

Why Has Refuge Island Been Neglected?

Several factors contribute to the continued neglect of Refuge Island:

1. Urban Planning and Policy Failures

Lagos’ expansion has been unplanned, with rapid development favoring high-value areas while low-income neighborhoods are ignored.

Refuge Island lacks formal recognition in urban planning, making it difficult for government agencies to invest in its development.

2. Government Focus on Wealthy Districts

The Lagos State Government prioritizes high-revenue zones like Eko Atlantic and Banana Island, where real estate and business investments generate massive returns.

Refuge Island does not attract immediate economic gains, leading to low government interest in improving the area.

3. Limited Private Sector Involvement

Businesses and investors avoid Refuge Island due to poor infrastructure and security concerns.

Unlike other parts of Lagos, where companies find opportunities for expansion, Refuge Island is seen as too risky for investment.

4. Bureaucracy and Corruption

Slow government processes and bureaucratic red tape delay or completely stall development projects.

Even when funds are allocated for urban improvement, corruption often prevents these resources from reaching neglected communities.

As a result, Refuge Island remains stuck in underdevelopment, while other parts of Lagos continue to grow and flourish.

The Human Cost of Neglect

The neglect of Refuge Island has led to severe economic, social, and health consequences.

Lagos’s Economic Boom: Why Refuge Island Remains Forgotten

High Unemployment and Poverty

With no job opportunities and limited access to education, many residents remain trapped in poverty.

The lack of government and private investment prevents economic growth, leaving people with few means to improve their lives.

Health and Sanitation Crisis

Diseases such as cholera and typhoid are common due to poor sanitation and a lack of clean water.

Pregnant women struggle to access maternal healthcare, leading to high childbirth-related complications.

Crime and Social Unrest

As frustration grows, many young people turn to crime, worsening the community’s security situation.

The absence of law enforcement and government oversight fuels a sense of abandonment and hopelessness.

Lagos’ economic prosperity should benefit all residents, not just a privileged few.

If the government continues to ignore Refuge Island, the gap between wealth and poverty in Lagos will widen, creating a city where only the rich thrive while the poor suffer.

The Way Forward: Bridging the Development Gap

For Lagos to achieve inclusive economic growth, urgent steps must be taken to integrate Refuge Island into the city’s development plans.

1. Infrastructure Development

The government must prioritize road construction, stable electricity, and clean water supply to improve living conditions.

Proper drainage systems should be built to prevent flooding and improve sanitation.

2. Public-Private Partnerships for Investment

The government should offer tax incentives and grants to attract investors willing to develop the area.

Businesses must be encouraged to establish factories, markets, and enterprises to create jobs for local residents.

3. Education and Skill Development

Schools and vocational training centers should be established to equip residents with employable skills.

Scholarships should be provided for children from low-income families to ensure they receive quality education.

Lagos’s Economic Boom: Why Refuge Island Remains Forgotten

4. Healthcare Expansion

Fully equipped health centers and emergency medical facilities should be built.

Government and NGOs should collaborate to provide free or subsidized healthcare services.

5. Community Engagement and Empowerment

Local residents should be involved in decision-making to ensure development projects align with their actual needs.

The government must establish social programs that empower youth and women to participate in economic activities.

Without these measures, Refuge Island will remain a symbol of inequality, a forgotten place in a city that prides itself on progress.

Conclusion: A Lagos for All, Not Just the Wealthy

Lagos is often called “The Center of Excellence,” but true excellence lies in fair and inclusive development.

Economic progress should not be limited to Victoria Island, Lekki, and highbrow districts—it must extend to every part of the city, including Refuge Island.

The government, private sector, and civil society must work together to uplift marginalized communities.

Refuge Island’s residents do not demand luxury; they simply seek basic human needs—electricity, water, healthcare, education, and security. These are not privileges; they are rights.

If Lagos is to be a truly great city, it must ensure that no community is left behind.

The success of Lagos should reflect in the lives of all its people, not just a select few.

It is time for Refuge Island to be part of Lagos’ development story.
