Lagos —

A two-day medical outreach in Ekinrin-Adde, Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State, has provided healthcare services to 582 residents, including children and adults.

The initiative offered medical consultations, screening, treatment and surgical procedures, while its findings highlighted the need for regular health checks and stronger access to healthcare in underserved communities.

Residents of Ekinrin-Adde in Ijumu Local Government Area of Kogi State have benefited from a free medical outreach that provided consultations, screening, treatment and surgical services to hundreds of people.

The exercise, organised by Dr Tunde Ibiteye in collaboration with Medical Initiative for Africa, attended to 582 residents during a two-day programme held on September 25 and 26, 2026.

According to a report published by Tribune Online on October 13, the outreach formed the first phase of a broader medical initiative designed to improve access to healthcare at the grassroots.

The programme served 485 adults and 97 children. It also provided an opportunity for residents to receive medical attention and learn more about health conditions that may go unnoticed without proper screening.

For communities where access to routine medical services can be difficult, free outreach programmes offer an opportunity to identify health concerns early and encourage residents to seek appropriate treatment.

However, sustaining these benefits will require more than occasional medical visits. Residents need access to follow-up care, affordable medicines and health facilities that can manage conditions requiring continued treatment.

Screening Reveals Major Health Concerns

One of the important outcomes of the outreach was the identification of residents living with hypertension and diabetes.

According to the report, screening identified 149 beneficiaries with hypertension, while 118 were found to have diabetes. Another 98 beneficiaries were reported to be living with both conditions.

These findings highlight the importance of routine health checks, particularly for conditions that may not produce obvious symptoms during their early stages.

Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, occurs when the pressure of blood against the walls of the arteries remains consistently high.

Without appropriate management, it can increase the risk of serious complications, including stroke, heart disease and kidney damage.

Diabetes, meanwhile, affects how the body regulates blood glucose. When it remains uncontrolled, it can damage the eyes, kidneys, nerves and blood vessels.

Although these conditions require professional assessment, early detection can help people take steps to manage them and reduce the risk of complications.

For residents who rarely undergo medical examinations, an outreach programme may provide their first opportunity to discover that they need further evaluation.

Nevertheless, screening results should lead to appropriate medical care. People diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes may require additional tests, prescribed medication, dietary changes and regular monitoring.

Therefore, health professionals and community stakeholders need to encourage beneficiaries to continue treatment after the outreach ends.

Why Free Medical Services Matter

The cost of healthcare can prevent some families from seeking medical attention when they need it. Consultation fees, laboratory tests, medication and transportation can place additional pressure on households already managing other essential expenses.

Consequently, free medical programmes can help reduce some of these barriers, particularly for residents who struggle to afford routine healthcare.

During the Ekinrin-Adde outreach, beneficiaries received medical screening, consultations, treatment and health education. The programme also provided surgical interventions, with 43 surgeries reported.

These services addressed different healthcare needs within the community and gave beneficiaries access to medical attention without the usual financial demands associated with many services.

However, free outreach programmes cannot replace a well-functioning primary healthcare system. Some patients require specialist consultations, diagnostic investigations or long-term treatment that extends beyond a short medical exercise.

For this reason, organisers and relevant health authorities should consider how to connect beneficiaries with appropriate facilities after the programme.

Such arrangements can help patients who require additional investigations or continued treatment avoid losing access to care once the visiting medical team leaves.

Health Education Supports Prevention

Beyond treatment, the outreach included health education intended to help residents understand their health conditions and the importance of prevention.

Health education can improve how people respond to symptoms, seek medical advice and follow treatment recommendations.

For example, adults can benefit from checking their blood pressure regularly, maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in physical activity and following professional advice about prescribed medication.

Similarly, people living with diabetes may need regular blood glucose monitoring, appropriate nutrition and consistent medical supervision.

However, health messages must also recognise the economic realities facing many households.

Advice about healthy eating, for instance, becomes more useful when people understand affordable food choices that are available within their communities.

Community leaders, health workers and local organisations can help spread practical information through meetings, religious gatherings and other community activities.

In addition, families can encourage older relatives and other vulnerable residents to attend medical appointments rather than wait until symptoms become severe.

These measures can strengthen the impact of medical outreach programmes by helping residents make informed decisions about their health.

The Importance of Follow-Up Care

Although the number of beneficiaries demonstrates the reach of the Ekinrin-Adde exercise, the longer-term impact will depend on what happens after the programme.

Residents identified with hypertension, diabetes or other conditions may require further medical attention.

Those who underwent surgery may also need follow-up appointments to monitor recovery and identify possible complications.

Therefore, beneficiaries should receive clear information about where to seek additional treatment and when to return for medical assessment.

Healthcare providers can also encourage patients to keep records of their diagnoses, test results and prescribed medicines. These records may help other medical professionals understand their conditions during subsequent visits.

Furthermore, community organisations can work with healthcare facilities to identify patients who need additional support accessing treatment.

Such collaboration is particularly valuable when patients face transportation difficulties or cannot afford repeated consultations.

However, any follow-up arrangement must protect patients’ privacy and ensure that medical decisions remain in the hands of qualified professionals.

The experience in Ekinrin-Adde also demonstrates the value of partnerships between medical professionals and organisations seeking to improve community welfare.

When such initiatives combine treatment with education and appropriate referrals, they can help residents understand their health needs and take steps towards managing them.

Building Stronger Community Healthcare

The medical outreach provides an opportunity to consider how rural and underserved communities can improve access to essential health services.

Regular screening programmes, better-equipped primary healthcare centres and community health education can help people identify health concerns before they become more difficult to manage.

At the same time, government agencies and development partners can support efforts to improve access to qualified health workers, essential medicines and diagnostic services.

Local leaders can also encourage residents to participate in health programmes and share information about available services.

However, these efforts must remain consistent. A single outreach may help hundreds of people, but communities need reliable healthcare services throughout the year.

The findings from Ekinrin-Adde also show why routine screening deserves greater attention.

The identification of residents with hypertension and diabetes demonstrates that people may require medical support even when they have not sought care for a specific complaint.

Therefore, communities should view preventive healthcare as an important part of everyday life rather than something reserved for emergencies.

For beneficiaries who received treatment during the outreach, following medical advice and attending subsequent appointments will be essential.

Ultimately, the programme represents a practical effort to bring healthcare closer to residents of Ekinrin-Adde.

Its lasting value will depend on continued access to treatment, stronger health awareness and effective links between outreach services and established healthcare facilities.
