Christmas airstrikes hit Nigeria as Gummi tells Tinubu to stop US Military operations

Following President Donald Trump’s destination of Nigeria as a ‘Country of Concern,’ having sighted Christian genocide in Nigeria, the US Army has finally launched its first attacks.

The President of United States America, Donald Trump has declared that the U.S. army had carried out a deadly strike against ISIS in Nigeria after the terrorist group was accused of killing Christians in the country.

“Tonight, at my direction as Commander in Chief, the United States launched a powerful and deadly strike against ISIS Terrorist Scum in Northwest Nigeria, who have been targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians, at levels not seen for many years, and even Centuries!” the president wrote in a Truth Social post the evening of Christmas Day.

“I have previously warned these Terrorists that if they did not stop the slaughtering of Christians, there would be hell to pay, and tonight, there was,” Trump continued.

“The Department of War executed numerous perfect strikes, as only the United States is capable of doing. Under my leadership, our Country will not allow Radical Islamic Terrorism to prosper.

“May God Bless our Military, and MERRY CHRISTMAS to all, including the dead Terrorists, of which there will be many more if their slaughter of Christians continues.”

The U.S. deadly airstrike was launched on Thursday night against ISIS terrorists, as reported by the Department of Defense (Defense Department).

In a statement made by a staff of Defense Department, it is revealed that the United States Department of Defense worked with Nigeria to carry out the strikes and they were assented to by the country’s government.

The Associated Press reports that Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the collaboration included the exchange of intelligence and strategic coordination in ways “consistent with international law, mutual respect for sovereignty and shared commitments to regional and global security.”

“Terrorist violence in any form, whether directed at Christians, Muslims or other communities, remains an affront to Nigeria’s values and to international peace and security,” the ministry said in a statement.

In response to Trump’s assertion that Nigerian Christians are targeted by terrorists, Nigeria’s government claimed that Christians are not the only ones targeted by the terrorists buy people of many faiths have suffered various degrees of attacks by the extremist sects.

Reacting to the strikes, Pentagon chief, Pete Hegseth and White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dropped posts on their verified x accounts.

Hegseth said in his post: “The President was clear last month: the killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria (and elsewhere) must end. The @DeptofWar is always ready, so ISIS found out tonight—on Christmas.”

Christmas Airstrikes Hit Nigeria

The defense secretary added, “Grateful for Nigerian government support & cooperation. Merry Christmas!”

The Defense Department, which Trump re-named as Department of War, also posted an evident video on X with a copy of Mr. Trump’s comments.

In the post of U.S Africa Command on X: “At the direction of the President of the United States and the Secretary of War, and in coordination with Nigerian authorities, U.S. Africa Command conducted strikes against ISIS terrorists in Nigeria on Dec. 25, 2025, in Sokoto State.”

Pete Hegseth, Secretary of Defence, thanked Nigerian government for their support on the deadly ISIS strikes.

It can be recalled that last month, President Donald Trump instructed the Defense Department to “prepare for possible action” in Nigeria, claiming that the country’s government “continues to allow the killing of Christians.”

Also, he announced that Nigeria is a “country of particular concern.” The U.S. government has used this designation for nations observed to have committed “particular severe violation of religious freedom,” as posted on the State Department’s website

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria has previously rebuffed Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’

Mr. Trump said in November: “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities.”

Christmas Airstrikes Hit Nigeria

Nigeria’s population of 220 million people is mostly split between Christians and Muslims. There are also armed insurgent groups operating in the nation, including the Islamic extremist organization Boko Haram, which has also targeted Muslims, reported by various media outlets.

Various parts of northern Nigeria have been hit by conflict in an ongoing security crisis and Trump has cited the country out for what he describes as “the killing of Christians” by “radical Islamists.”

Affected people and Christian leaders in the country have echoed Trump’s claim that Christians are persecuted, saying they’ve long been targeted, abducted or murdered over their faith.

Stop U.S. Military Operations Now, Gummi Tells Tinubu

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to swiftly halt all the United States military operations in the country.

Gummi issued a warning that American inference could aggravate Nigeria’s security issues and undermine the country’s sovereignty. This call was made by the Islamic cleric on his Facebook page on Friday.

He noted that, while Islam supports the fight against terrorism, such move can only be made by “clean hands,” stating that the United States does not have the moral standing to spearhead such moves because of its world military record.

According to Gummi, he said that Nigeria had made a terrible mistake by letting foreign powers to play a role in its counterterrorism operations, insisting that “terrorists do not truly fight terrorists” and such an interference usually results in civilian casualties and hidden political interests.

Christmas Airstrikes Hit Nigeria

He warned that letting Nigeria become a center of war would attract anti-US forces into the country, and worsen the situation.

He also cautioned that US involvement, particularly under claims of protecting Christians, could polarize the country along religious lines.

The cleric also noted that airstrikes alone cannot wipe out terrorism, adding that actual counterterrorism demands strong ground operations, which he stated that Nigeria has strong-enough military to actualize if properly organized.

“This is the mistake Nigeria has made. Terrorists don’t fight terrorists in truth; they may only kill innocent people and have ulterior motives behind the drama of fighting ‘terror’.

Christmas Airstrikes Hit Nigeria

“As a principle, no nation should allow its land to be a theater of war. And no nation should allow its neighbors to be their enemies.

“If Nigeria wants military assistance, China, Turkey, and Pakistan can do the job effectively,” Gummi added.
