  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

  • Rev. Ezekiel Dachamo Alleges Boko Haram Infiltrated Nigerian Military, Links Claim to U.S. Troop Withdrawal

JOS, Nigeria — The Regional Chairman of the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, Rev. Ezekiel Dachamo, has alleged that members of the Boko Haram insurgent group have occupied strategic positions within the Nigerian Armed Forces.

The cleric made the remarks in a video circulated on his social media page, where he discussed the security situation in Nigeria and the recurring violence in parts of the country.

According to Rev. Dachamo, the alleged infiltration of the military was the reason United States military personnel were withdrawn from Nigeria after, he claimed, they received security reports from troops deployed to assess the security situation.

He further alleged that the U.S. personnel had been sent in connection with concerns over what he described as the killing of Christian communities in parts of the country.

Rev. Dachamo did not provide evidence to substantiate his claims during the video.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian Armed Forces, the Federal Government of Nigeria, and the United States Government had not publicly confirmed Rev. Dachamo

Nigel Farage’s resignation as MP for Clacton has turned a parliamentary standards controversy into a wider test of political money, democratic accountability and migration politics. President Bola Tinubu has said the enduring legacy of Nigeria’s former leader, Muhammadu Buhari, will continue to inspire generations, describing him as a symbol of discipline, integrity and selfless service whose life remains etched in the country’s collective memory.

Tinubu made the remarks on Monday in Abuja at an event marking the first anniversary of Buhari’s passing.

Represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, the President told dignitaries, family members and associates of the late leader that Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria transcended his years in office and would continue to shape national values.

According to Tinubu, the gathering was not merely ceremonial but an opportunity for reflection on the life and legacy of a man he described as a patriot who dedicated himself wholly to the progress and unity of Nigeria.

“We are gathered here today, one year after the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, because the life he lived is not one this nation is capable of forgetting,” Tinubu said

“He has entered the consciousness of Nigeria, and it is in the nature of such men that their memory outlives the living.”He added

The President noted that Buhari’s legacy was defined not by personal accolades but by a consistent demonstration of integrity, discipline and commitment to national service.

He urged Nigerians to uphold these values, stressing that they remain essential to building a stable and prosperous nation.

Tinubu Hails Buhari’s Legacy

Tinubu also reflected on his personal and political relationship with the late president, describing them as “co-travellers” who shared a vision for a united and progressive Nigeria. He said their partnership was rooted in a common belief in national development, peace and inclusiveness.

“We worked together through seasons of difficulty and seasons of hope.We shared a deep and abiding passion for a renewed Nigeria-a nation held together by brotherhood, settled in peace, and generous in abundance so that no citizen is left outside the circle of its promise.”

He added that Buhari’s life journey from military leadership to democratic governance demonstrated resilience, adaptability and an unwavering commitment to national ideals.

According to Tinubu, Buhari remains one of the few Nigerian leaders to have served the country in two distinct capacities, first as a military Head of State and later as a democratically elected president.

Tinubu further emphasised that Buhari’s popularity and the trust Nigerians placed in him endured even after he left office, attributing this to his reputation for honesty and his modest personal lifestyle.

Addressing the family of the late president, including former First Lady Aisha Buhari, Tinubu expressed sympathy and assured them of continued support from the government and the Nigerian people.

“To the immediate family, I know that you have passed through a season of profound grief,” he said.

“Please be assured that the nation and this administration stand with you now and in all the years to come.”he added

He added that those who worked closely with Buhari have a responsibility to sustain the values he embodied, particularly honesty, simplicity and self-discipline.

Yakubu Gowon Recounts Relationship With Buhari

In his remarks, former Head of State Yakubu Gowon recounted his longstanding relationship with Buhari, which he said began during their years in the military.

Gowon described the late president as a gallant soldier and a leader deeply committed to Nigeria’s unity.

“My relationship with General Buhari goes back many years. We served together as soldiers, and all of us did our best to keep this country united,” Gowon said.

“I knew him as a man who earned respect.”

Gowon also traced Buhari’s political journey, noting that despite several unsuccessful attempts at the presidency, he remained persistent until he eventually succeeded.

He highlighted the role played by Tinubu in Buhari’s eventual emergence as president in 2015, describing their alliance as pivotal.

“However, when he joined hands with Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, they formed a strong political alliance,” Gowon said.

“The support he received certainly helped him to emerge as President, and their partnership remained strong throughout his administration.”He added

According to Gowon, Buhari later reciprocated that support by backing Tinubu’s own presidential ambition, thereby ensuring continuity in leadership.

He commended Buhari for placing national interest above personal ambition, citing the peaceful transition of power during the 2015 general elections as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.

Gowon recalled that there had been widespread concern about possible post-election violence at the time, especially among international observers attending an African Union meeting in Addis Ababa.

However, the fears were allayed when then-President Goodluck Jonathan conceded defeat before the final results were announced.

“General Buhari graciously accepted President Jonathan’s concession and expressed appreciation for his decision. That action helped Nigeria avoid an election crisis and demonstrated that he was a leader who placed the interests of Nigeria above all else.”Gowon Stated

Buhari’s Legacy Extend Beyond Politcs-Gov Radda

Also speaking at the event, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umar Radda, represented by Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, described Buhari as a leader whose life exemplified integrity, discipline and dedication to national unity.

Radda noted that Buhari’s legacy extended beyond politics, pointing to his contributions in key sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, security and social development.

He said the former president’s policies and programmes had lasting impacts on the country, particularly in promoting self-reliance and national cohesion.

He further highlighted Buhari’s simple lifestyle as a defining feature of his leadership, noting that it earned him admiration and respect across different segments of society.

“The late president’s life teaches us that leadership is about service, not personal gain,” the governor said.

“His commitment to accountability, honesty and unity should serve as a guiding principle for all Nigerians.”he added

Radda added that the Katsina State Government would continue to implement people-oriented policies that reflect the ideals associated with Buhari, particularly in areas of development and social welfare.

The memorial event brought together political leaders, government officials, members of the diplomatic community and associates of the late president, all of whom paid tribute to a man widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s most influential leaders.

As tributes continue to pour in one year after his passing, speakers at the event agreed that Buhari’s legacy anchored on discipline, integrity and national service remains a moral compass for Nigeria’s present and future leadership.
