KaNO —

The All Progressives Congress APC has cleared Governor Abba Kabir  Yusuf to contest for a second term in the 2027 governorship election in Kano State.

This was revealed in a statement signed and made available to journalists on Friday by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa.

According to the spokesperson, the governor has been successfully screened by the National Working Committee of the party after the submission of his nomination and screening forms.

The statement added that the screening exercise was conducted by a committee led by the APC National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, at the Plateau Governor’s Lodge.

During the exercise, the National Chairman, Yilwatda, made a remark, stating that the party was satisfied with the governor’s performance and eligibility to seek re-election.

“After careful screening and verification of all submitted documents, the committee is satisfied that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has fulfilled all constitutional and party requirements to contest for a second term under the platform of the APC,” he said.

“The governor has demonstrated commitment to governance, party unity, and the development of Kano State.

Consequently, he has been cleared and recognised as, so far, the sole aspirant for the APC governorship ticket in Kano State ahead of the 2027 election” he added

Speaking after the exercise, Yusuf expressed appreciation to the party leadership for the confidence reposed in him.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust and support shown to me by the leadership of our great party. This confidence will further inspire us to remain focused on delivering meaningful development and improving the lives of our people,” the governor said.

He also reaffirmed his commitment to sustaining policies aimed at promoting peace, economic growth, and inclusive governance in the state.

“We remain committed to building a Kano where every citizen feels included, protected, and empowered. Our administration will continue to prioritise education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth empowerment, and economic opportunities for all,” Yusuf added

The governor also urged party members and supporters to remain united ahead of the 2027 polls.

“I urge all our party members, supporters, and stakeholders to remain united and committed to the collective interest of Kano State. Together, we will consolidate on our achievements and secure victory for our great party in 2027,” he stated.

The development comes amid growing political activities and consultations across political parties ahead of the next general elections.

Gov Yusuf had earlier parted ways with his political godfather, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso after he defected to the ruling APC, a move that made the two close associates sworn enemies.

Tinubu Promise Automatic Ticket For Lawmakers
President Bola Tinubu had earlier promised to support automatic tickets to the members of the National Assembly who defected to the ruling APC.

Tinubu, who made the statement at the State House during an interfaith breaking of fast with the lawmakers, said the motive was to reduce the high turnover of the members in the upcoming elections.

The president, who acknowledged that some constituencies rotate members of the National Assembly, however promised to “do everything within the party’s powers” for the current set to continue, in 2027.
“I will do everything within our party’s power. In several constituencies, there are rotational arrangements. I wish that everyone would return,” he said

With the president’s promise, it was not a surprise that the All Progressives Congress (APC)–led National Assembly inserted direct primaries in the Electoral Act 2026 where candidates would emerge through consensus arrangements.

Kwankwaso’s Dilemma.
After the defection of Gov Yusuf to the ruling APC, Senator Kwankwaso was left with a few lawmakers and loyalists in the New Nigeria People’s Party.

However, he also defected to the African Democratic Congress with his followers and loyalties to join former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Labour Party Presidential Candidate Peter Obi.

Internal crisis and the need to secure the presidential ticket for the 2027 general elections made Kwankwaso and his counterpart, Peter Obi ditch the ADC for NDC, a party founded by a former Bayelsa State governor and serving senator in the 10th Assembly, Seriake Dickson.

KANO NDC In Crisis
The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress is in turmoil after the party’s chairman, Usaini Isa Mai Riga, rejected moves to hand control of the state party’s structure to former governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who joined the NDC on Sunday alongside Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi.

The Chairman has vowed to resist any attempt to upturn the existing structure.

Speaking on the issue during an interview with The Whistler in Kano, Mai Riga said meetings have been convened to formally accommodate Kwankwaso into the party’s structure but the meetings ended in chaos over disagreements on leadership arrangements, with the former governor reportedly insisting on full control of the party structure.

“He wants us to hand over the entire party to him, despite the sacrifices we made when the party had little or no presence,” Mai Riga said, adding that the current leadership would pursue all lawful avenues to prevent a takeover” The chairman said

The chairman further accused the NDC’s national leadership of deliberately suspending the planned state congress in Kano while similar congresses proceeded in other states to pave the way for Kwankwaso’s takeover.

He said the directive was the reason he was absent from the congress venue.

He further noted that Kwankwaso had yet to formally engage the state executive committee since arriving in Kano on Monday, delegating discussions instead to former deputy governor Aminu Abdussalam.
