  • Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

Historically, society associated aging with an inevitable physical decline. Consequently, people accepted this slow frailty as completely natural.

However, modern medical science drastically shifts this outdated paradigm today. Gerontology experts actively change how we view human aging entirely.

Sarcopenia drives this specific physical decline primarily. Doctors define sarcopenia as age-related skeletal muscle mass loss.

Furthermore, this progressive condition destroys essential physical strength and function. Obviously, humans cannot stop the natural aging process entirely.

However, medical professionals no longer view sarcopenia as absolutely certain. Instead, they increasingly recognize it as a highly manageable condition. In fact, proactive patients frequently reverse this muscular degradation completely.

Therefore, addressing it requires a fundamental health approach shift. We must actively move away from passive senior healthcare completely. Instead, we must urgently embrace active, targeted physical interventions.

Consequently, these interventions focus heavily on vigorous daily resistance training. Additionally, they center around optimizing biological muscle protein synthesis continuously.

The Biological Mechanics of Muscle Loss

Sarcopenia typically begins during the fourth decade of human life. Muscle mass actively declines by three to eight percent per decade.

This specific physical decline starts occurring after a person turns thirty. Furthermore, this alarming loss rate accelerates significantly after age sixty.

Profound Structural Degradation

Importantly, this muscular loss is never merely a cosmetic issue. Rather, it represents a profound metabolic and structural bodily degradation.

The healthy human body maintains a constant state of protein turnover. It continuously balances muscle protein synthesis with muscle protein breakdown.

During youth, the human body maintains this delicate balance easily. However, the aging body actively develops a dangerous biological phenomenon. Scientists call this frustrating physiological process “anabolic resistance.”

The Threat of Anabolic Resistance

Anabolic resistance makes the aging body notably less responsive. Specifically, the body ignores the two primary muscle growth stimuli. These essential stimuli include dietary protein and vigorous physical activity. Moreover, normal aging brings about a severe motor neuron reduction. These vital nerve cells signal your muscle fibers to contract.

Motor Neurons and Myosteatosis

Tragically, when a motor neuron dies, its connected fibers atrophy. Neighboring neurons successfully rescue some of these abandoned muscle fibers. Nevertheless, the overall muscle architecture becomes drastically smaller and weaker. Furthermore, unhealthy fat and connective tissue infiltrate the muscle belly. Medical researchers identify this specific destructive process as myosteatosis.

Protein Synthesis: The Nutritional Foundation

Patients must utilize targeted nutritional strategies to overcome anabolic resistance. Most notably, they must deliberately increase their daily protein intake. Current dietary guidelines frequently suggest an entirely insufficient baseline amount.

Reevaluating Daily Guidelines

The standard medical recommendation sits around 0.8 grams per kilogram. However, older adults need much more to combat sarcopenia actively. Therefore, they require closer to 1.5 grams per kilogram daily. More importantly, the quality and timing of protein matter immensely.

The Power of Leucine

The amino acid leucine plays a singular, vital preservation role. Essentially, leucine acts as a powerful molecular switch inside cells. It actively turns on the crucial mTOR biological pathway. Consequently, this specific pathway directly stimulates muscle protein synthesis.

Stimulating the Pathway

Older adults suffer deeply from stubborn anabolic resistance constantly. Therefore, they require a much higher leucine threshold per meal. They must consume enough protein to successfully “flip the switch.” Patients must distribute protein intake evenly across three daily meals.

They should aim for thirty grams of high-quality protein per meal. Consequently, this strategy successfully stimulates the mTOR pathway multiple times. Ultimately, it effectively combats the body’s natural muscle breakdown tendency.

Resistance Training: The Mechanical Antidote

Protein definitely provides the essential biological building blocks for growth. Meanwhile, resistance training provides the mandatory architectural blueprint for success. Aerobic exercises like walking and swimming remain excellent daily activities. They provide fantastic benefits for overall human cardiovascular health. However, they remain entirely insufficient for halting aggressive sarcopenia.

The Necessity of Mechanical Tension

The primary defense against age-related muscle loss is mechanical tension. This tension places intense physical stress directly on working muscles. Individuals create this beneficial stress by lifting heavy metal weights. Alternatively, they can use strong, elastic resistance bands effectively. Furthermore, they can perform challenging bodyweight exercises consistently at home.

Forcing Neuromuscular Adaptation

Vigorous resistance training directly forces the neuromuscular system to adapt. First, it actively stimulates significant muscle fiber hypertrophy immediately. This hypertrophy dramatically increases the physical size of individual muscle fibers. Specifically, it targets the fast-twitch Type II fibers heavily. Aging typically affects these specific fast-twitch fibers the most.

Rewiring the Nervous System

Additionally, resistance training vastly improves motor unit recruitment efficiency. Older adults must engage in consistent, challenging resistance training routines. Consequently, they essentially rewire their aging nervous system completely. Their nervous system quickly learns to fire more powerfully.

The Repair Process

This intense training inevitably triggers an acute bodily inflammatory response. Initially, this acute inflammation briefly damages the targeted muscle tissue. Ultimately, however, it forcefully signals the body to repair everything. The body fortifies the damaged tissue quickly and highly efficiently. Therefore, the training renders the muscle much stronger than before.

Maintaining Physical Independence

The high stakes of sarcopenia extend far beyond physical strength. Fundamentally, they involve maintaining physical independence and high life quality. Skeletal muscle functions as a highly vital endocrine organ today. Therefore, it plays a massive role in healthy glucose metabolism. Furthermore, it heavily supports overall systemic metabolic health for everyone.

The Link to Chronic Disease

Severe muscle mass loss directly correlates with dangerous insulin resistance. Consequently, it strongly drives type 2 diabetes development worldwide. Moreover, this massive muscular loss exacerbates serious cardiovascular disease progression. Additionally, sarcopenia acts as the primary driver of older people frailty. It heavily causes dangerous, life-threatening falls among the older people population.

Preventing Catastrophic Falls

A healthy thirty-year-old easily catches themselves during a minor trip. However, that same trip becomes a catastrophic event later. An individual with severe sarcopenia suffers terrible consequences from falling. For example, hip fractures carry a startlingly high mortality rate.

Power and Balance

Fortunately, older people can largely prevent these terrible hip fractures entirely. They simply must maintain their lower body power and balance. Both attributes represent direct, positive outcomes of consistent resistance training.

A Public Health Imperative

Ultimately, combatting widespread sarcopenia remains an absolute public health imperative. Society must completely reframe the fundamental purpose of daily exercise. We must stop viewing it merely as an aesthetics tool. Instead, we must view it as a non-negotiable medical intervention.

Securing Autonomy

This specific intervention ensures longevity and secures physical autonomy. Resistance training and strategic protein intake transcend simple fitness strategies. Actually, they represent the most effective medical prescription for aging. Therefore, they guarantee a resilient, strong, and highly independent life.
