  • At Least 100 Killed in Nigerian Airstrike on Zamfara Market, Amnesty International Says
At least 100 people were killed after a Nigerian military airstrike reportedly hit a market area in Zamfara State, according to Amnesty International, in one of the deadliest incidents involving aerial bombardment in the country in recent times.
The rights organisation said the strike occurred during a busy trading period, leaving scores dead and many others injured. Witnesses and local sources cited by Amnesty claimed that civilians, including traders, women, and children, were among the casualties.
According to reports, the affected community was thrown into chaos as residents scrambled for safety following the explosion. Eyewitnesses described scenes of destruction, with shops damaged and emergency efforts overwhelmed by the scale of casualties.
Amnesty International called for an immediate and transparent investigation into the incident, urging Nigerian authorities to determine whether international humanitarian laws were violated during the operation.
The Nigerian military has yet to issue a detailed official response regarding the allegations and casualty figures at the time of reporting. Security operations in Zamfara and surrounding northwestern states have intensified in recent years as armed groups continue attacks, kidnappings, and raids on rural communities.
Airstrikes have increasingly been used as part of counterinsurgency and anti-banditry operations, though rights groups and local communities have repeatedly raised concerns over civilian casualties and intelligence failures.
The incident is expected to renew debate over military tactics, civilian protection, and accountability in Nigeria’s ongoing security operations.

Royal division overshadows Eid-el-Kabir in Kano. Instead of unity, the ancient city witnessed a most symbolic and public split in its traditional leadership.

Two rival claimants to the Emir of Kano throne, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero and Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II led separate Eid prayers.

The separate Eid prayers at different eid ground, has deepening the power struggle within the Kano emirate, a revered central institution to Northern Nigeria’s identity.

Tale of Two Emirs That Lead Separate Eid Prayers

At the Nasarawa mini palace, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, the son of (late Alhaji. Ado Bayero, one of the remarkable emirs whose legacies transcended the ordinary in Africa)  who was deposed in May but secured a court order for reinstatement, led Eid prayers amid heavy security.

His congregation was addressed by Sarkin Malamai, Malam Kamalu Inuwa, who urged believers to embody the values of sacrifice, patience, and unity, drawing from the example of Prophet Ibrahim.

Meanwhile, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, reinstated forcefully by the Kano State Government just weeks ago, presided over a massive gathering at the Kofar Mata Central Eid Ground.

Attended by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, top state officials, and traditional leaders, the event served as a show of state-backed support for Sanusi, an act which many but not few, described as show injustice and side taking.

Likewise, on the contrary, it only revealed how far the state government top officials can go, to hinder the opposing move and attain victory.

In his sermon, Sanusi addressed a pressing issue, worth must demanding; youth violence and rising insecurity in Kano.

He emphasized community collaboration, partnership, responsible parenting, and stronger social bonds to combat criminality.

“We must not allow violence and disunity to destroy the legacy of peace our forefathers established in Kano,” Sanusi said. “A good upbringing begins at home.”

Security Ensured a Peaceful Eid Despite Tensions

Despite the high profile leadership standoff, Eid prayers in Kano were conducted peacefully.

Security forces were stationed at all major prayer grounds, successfully maintaining order and preventing any confrontation between the two factions.

The simultaneous prayers, however, reflect more than a theological divide, but they are the clearest public signal yet of a divided emirate.

Eid-el-Kabir 2025 in Kano was marked by a rare and symbolic split in royal authority, as rival Emirs Aminu Ado Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi II led separate Eid prayers…!

Residents and observers fear that the longer the dispute persists, the more it may threaten the cultural cohesion and spiritual leadership that the Kano Emirate Council has long represented and held up to.

Royal Division Overshadows Eid-el-Kabir in Kano

How the Kano Emirate Crisis persist

The roots of this dispute goes back to 2020, when then governor Abdullahi Ganduje deposed Emir Sanusi II, citing insubordination and political tensions. Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, a son of the late Emir Ado Bayero, was appointed in his place.

In a stunning political reversal in May 2024, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf nullified the Ganduje era law that divided Kano into five emirates, reinstated Sanusi, and dissolved the newly created emirates.

Bayero contested this move, securing a court injunction to maintain his position, thus setting the stage for a constitutional standoff.

The situation remains fluid as legal challenges and appeals continue, and public opinion remains deeply split.

Implications for the Future of Traditional Ruling in Nigeria

This dual-emir scenario in Kano has ignited national conversations about the future of traditional institutions in modern Nigerian governance, referencing this with what others are campaigning for in the katsina emirate.

Youth across various communities of katsina are shouting and advocating that katsina state government should consider dividing the emirate to multiples distinction

The crisis reveals the increasingly political nature of emirship appointments and raises questions about how far state governments should influence royal affairs.

In a stunning concern, if more of this is yet to happen, then the traditional institution would be down-founded, and of no value.

Royal Division Overshadows Eid-el-Kabir in Kano

This has left several people with a belief that next to, is the Borno empire left out as the center of attention in the entire northern Nigeria, on what to tune next.

More critically, the public nature of the dispute, amplified through media and digital platforms, defined the risks undermining the respect and unity traditionally commanded by the Emir of Kano.

Looking at the  escalating controversies arising between the two, this emirship tussle must be addressed in order to regain and regain the royal value.

Eid-el-Kabir 2025 in Kano was marked by a rare and symbolic split in royal authority, as rival Emirs Aminu Ado Bayero and Muhammadu Sanusi II led separate Eid prayers…!

If unresolved, the conflict could diminish the moral authority of the emirate at a time when communities need strong, and unifying voices.

A Call for Dialogue and Resolution
