  • Nigel Farage’s Resignation : Political Money, Broken Rules and the Africa Diaspora Question

Nigel Farage’s resignation as MP for Clacton has turned a parliamentary standards controversy into a wider test of political money, democratic accountability and migration politics. With major parties refusing to contest the by-election, the episode raises urgent questions about whether electoral theatre can be used to weaken parliamentary scrutiny — and what that means for African diasporas in Britain, Ireland and at home....

  • Teaching Al-Musannaf Requires Rare Scholarly Expertise Beyond the Reach of Many Nigerian Scholars

Renowned Islamic scholar and founder of Darul Hadith Salafiyya, Zaria, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam (Albani Zaria), has stated that teaching Kitabul Al-Musannaf requires an exceptional level of scholarly competence that, according to him, many Nigerian Islamic scholars do not possess.

The late cleric made the remarks during one of his Sahih al-Bukhari lectures in 2013, while discussing contemporary religious issues and the qualifications required to teach classical Islamic texts.

According to Sheikh Albani, Al-Musannaf is among the most comprehensive works in Islamic scholarship and demands mastery of several disciplines before a scholar can competently teach its contents.

"Teaching Kitabul Al-Musannaf requires rare scholarly expertise beyond what many Nigerian scholars possess," he said.

He explained that a scholar seeking to teach the book must possess extensive knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), Hadith sciences (Mustalah al-Hadith), Islamic history (Tarikh), principles of narration, and other related Islamic sciences.

Albani argued that beyond academic qualifications, teaching the text requires years of specialization, extensive research, and a deep understanding of the differences among classical scholars and schools of thought.

According to him, many scholars lack the time, specialization, and depth of knowledge necessary to undertake such a demanding scholarly responsibility.

The respected scholar maintained that teaching advanced Islamic texts without the required expertise could lead to misunderstanding, inaccurate interpretations, and confusion among students of knowledge.

Putin Renews War Defiance, and has vowed that Russia’s objectives in its war against Ukraine “will undoubtedly be achieved,” either through diplomacy or military force, as he sharply criticized European leaders and accused the West of prolonging the conflict through continued support for Kyiv.

His comments, delivered during a meeting with senior officials at Russia’s defense ministry, come amid renewed diplomatic activity in Europe and ongoing discussions over increased military and financial assistance to Ukraine.

Putin Renews War Defiance

In remarks broadcast by Russian state media, Putin struck a combative tone while signaling conditional openness to negotiations. He said Russia remained prepared for what he described as “substantive talks,” particularly with the United States, but insisted that any diplomatic process must recognize what Moscow views as the “realities on the ground.”

He stressed that Russia would not abandon its strategic goals, which include maintaining control over occupied Ukrainian territories and resisting Ukraine’s closer alignment with Western military alliances.

During the address, Putin used unusually crude language to dismiss European leaders advocating increased aid to Ukraine, referring to them as “little pigs” as they debate higher defense spending and expanded military assistance for Kyiv.

The remarks have drawn condemnation from Western officials and are expected to further strain relations between Moscow and European capitals already locked in a prolonged standoff with Russia.

The comments coincided with preparations for a high level European Union summit in Brussels, where Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to meet EU leaders to discuss continued political, military, and economic support for Ukraine.

European officials say the talks will focus on sustaining long term assistance as the war enters another year with no clear path to a negotiated settlement.

Since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022, European governments and the United States have provided Ukraine with billions of dollars in military equipment, humanitarian aid, and financial assistance.

Putin Renews War Defiance

Recent proposals under discussion include expanding multi year funding packages, increasing ammunition production, and strengthening Ukraine’s air defense capabilities in response to ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.

Putin accused European governments of deliberately fueling the conflict by supplying weapons to Kyiv, arguing that Western involvement has transformed the war into a broader confrontation between Russia and NATO.

He repeated Moscow’s long standing claim that the conflict is a defensive operation aimed at protecting Russia’s security interests and countering what he described as NATO’s expansion toward its borders.

Western leaders have consistently rejected that narrative, insisting that Russia’s invasion violates international law and Ukraine’s sovereignty.

European and U.S. officials argue that continued support for Kyiv is necessary to prevent further aggression and to uphold the principle that borders cannot be changed by force.

Ukrainian authorities have also dismissed Moscow’s calls for talks as insincere, noting that Russian forces continue to carry out attacks across the country.

President Zelensky has repeatedly stated that any peace process must be based on the full withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukrainian territory, including areas annexed by Moscow in 2022 following referendums that Ukraine and its allies describe as illegal.

The war has had devastating consequences, with tens of thousands killed, cities reduced to rubble, and millions of Ukrainians displaced internally or forced to flee abroad.

The conflict has also reshaped global energy markets, disrupted food supplies, and heightened geopolitical tensions far beyond Eastern Europe.

Putin Renews War Defiance

Putin’s latest remarks suggest that Moscow is preparing for a prolonged confrontation, even as it seeks to project confidence about its military and economic resilience.

Russian officials have repeatedly highlighted what they describe as the country’s ability to withstand Western sanctions, pointing to stable energy revenues and increased defense production as evidence that Russia can sustain the war effort.

However, independent analysts note that Russia continues to face significant challenges, including battlefield losses, pressure on its military manpower, and continued economic impact of sanctions.

Despite these difficulties, the Kremlin has shown no indication of altering its core objectives in Ukraine. European leaders, meanwhile, are grappling with the political and economic costs of supporting Ukraine, including rising defense expenditures and domestic debates over the sustainability of long term aid.

Still, EU officials have emphasized that abandoning Ukraine would carry far greater risks, potentially emboldening authoritarian states and undermining global security norms.

U.S. officials have also reiterated their commitment to Ukraine while urging European allies to maintain unity.

Washington has said it remains open to diplomacy but insists that any negotiations must be led by Ukraine and respect its territorial integrity.

The Kremlin has maintained that it is willing to engage in dialogue, but Russian officials have made clear that they expect Western governments to acknowledge Russia’s territorial claims and security demands, conditions that Kyiv and its allies have firmly rejected.

Putin Renews War Defiance

As winter conditions set in and fighting continues along multiple fronts, prospects for a near term ceasefire remain slim.

Both Russia and Ukraine appear entrenched in their positions, while diplomatic efforts have so far failed to bridge the gap between their demands.

Putin’s speech underscores the widening divide between Moscow and the West, as well as the deepening sense that the conflict has become a defining feature of the global geopolitical landscape.

With European leaders preparing to reaffirm their support for Ukraine and Russia signaling its determination to press on, the war shows no immediate signs of de-escalation.

For now, the conflict continues to test international alliances, strain diplomatic relations, and shape security calculations across Europe and beyond, as the world watches for any indication that rhetoric might give way to meaningful negotiations.
