• Gen. Yakubu Gowon Says Two Christian Friends in Plateau Betrayed Him in New Memoir

Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), has revealed that two of his Christian friends from Plateau State betrayed him, saying the experience remains one of the painful memories of his life.

Gowon made the revelation in his newly launched memoir, My Life of Duty, unveiled in Abuja during a ceremony attended by prominent national figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, former First Lady Aisha Buhari, former Heads of State, senior military officers, diplomats, and other distinguished guests.

In the book, the former Head of State recalled that two of his Christian friends in Plateau State abandoned and betrayed him, noting that the incident left a lasting emotional impact.

According to Gowon, despite the passage of time, he still feels the pain of what he described as their betrayal.

The elder statesman explained that one of the major reasons for writing My Life of Duty was to correct what he described as longstanding misconceptions and inaccurate interpretations about his life, his leadership, and the policies of his administration.

He said the memoir offers his personal account of key events in Nigeria

  • Three Years After Lalong Left Office, Nigerians Reflect on His Legacy

Three years after the administration of former Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong came to an end, residents and political observers have continued to reflect on his eight-year tenure, with discussions centering on his achievements, shortcomings, and overall legacy.

Across social media platforms and public forums, many Nigerians have been asking a common question: "Three years after the Lalong administration ended, what stands out most to you about his time in office?"

The question has generated diverse reactions, with some respondents highlighting infrastructure development, road construction, educational reforms, and efforts to promote peaceful coexistence during his administration.

Others, however, pointed to persistent security challenges, economic concerns, unemployment, and governance issues, arguing that these remain among the defining aspects of Lalong

The Nigerian movie industry is currently experiencing a massive wave of excitement, and one specific movie title is on everyone’s lips. If you have spent any time on social media or around film lovers recently, you have definitely heard about My Father’s Shadow. Directed by the highly talented Akinola Davies Jr., this deeply emotional drama has officially become the undisputed heavyweight champion of the cinema season.

For a movie that started as a quiet, artistic project, its journey to the top has been nothing short of spectacular. The biggest turning point happened at the prestigious 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA 2026). On that historic night, My Father’s Shadow did not just participate; it completely swept the floor by winning five major awards. Most importantly, it walked away with the biggest trophy of the night: Best Movie. Since that massive win, ordinary Nigerians who missed its initial release have been begging for a chance to watch it. In response to this intense public demand, the producers have announced a highly anticipated theatrical re-release this June.

The Big AMVCA Sweep That Shocked Everyone
To understand why this movie is trending so heavily, you have to look at what happened at the AMVCA ceremony. Usually, the films that win big at award shows are the loud, high-budget comedies or massive cultural blockbusters that everyone has already seen in the cinemas. My Father’s Shadow took a completely different path. It won its prizes through sheer artistic beauty and top-tier quality.

The movie was nominated in several categories, and by the time the event ended, it had secured five major wins:
Best Overall Movie
Best Director (Akinola Davies Jr.)
Best Writing (Wale Davies)
Best Score/Music (Duval Timothy and CJ Mirra)
Best Sound Design (Pius Fatoke and CJ Mirra)
This historic sweep was decided by a highly respected panel of industry experts led by veteran actress Joke Silva. The judges made it clear that they chose My Father’s Shadow because of its incredible storytelling, deep emotional impact, and flawless technical work. It proved that a movie does not need to rely on cheap laughs or massive social media stunts to be recognized as a masterpiece. It just needs to tell a powerful story beautifully.

What is ‘My Father’s Shadow’ Really About?
So, what is the story that has captivated both international film festivals and local award judges? My Father’s Shadow is a deeply personal and emotional family drama set against the backdrop of one of Nigeria’s most unforgettable historical moments: the turbulent 1993 political election crisis.

The story follows two young brothers, Akin and Remi, who end up spending a single, transformative day traveling through the bustling city of Lagos with their estranged father, Folarin (played brilliantly by British-Nigerian actor Ṣọpẹ́ Dìrísù). Folarin is not a perfect hero; he is a deeply flawed, struggling man who loves his children but has been absent from their lives. As they journey through the crowded buses, military checkpoints, and restless streets of Lagos, the young boys begin to discover the complicated truth about who their father really is.

What starts as a simple day out quickly unfolds into a moving story about brotherhood, memory, and the complex relationship between Nigerian fathers and their sons. The background of political instability and national fear makes the family drama feel incredibly high-stakes. It shows how the stress of a country falling apart can deeply affect the peace and unity of a home. It is a story that makes history feel intensely personal, leaving audiences with wet eyes and thoughtful hearts long after the final credits roll.

Why Audiences are Clamoring to See It
When My Father’s Shadow first had its limited run in Nigerian cinemas late last year, it was highly praised by critics, but many everyday moviegoers did not get the chance to catch it. At the time, the film was busy making waves internationally even making history as the first Nigerian film to be selected for the Cannes Film Festival’s official lineup and winning a prestigious BAFTA award in the United Kingdom.

However, after the film dominated the AMVCAs over the weekend, a massive wave of curiosity hit the Nigerian public. Suddenly, everyone wanted to know why this specific drama beat out all the popular box office blockbusters. Comment sections under movie review pages were flooded with questions from fans asking where they could stream or buy tickets to watch it.

This intense curiosity has created a rare level of excitement for a drama film. People are tired of seeing the same old formulas on screen, and the buzz surrounding My Father’s Shadow promises something fresh, deeply artistic, and thoroughly Nigerian. It has quickly moved from being an exclusive film for critics to a “must-watch” cultural event for the general public.

The Big June Return: A Second Chance for Film Lovers
Recognizing the massive demand from the public, the producers of the film, in partnership with FilmOne Entertainment, have made a brilliant decision. Starting from June 5, 2026, My Father’s Shadow will be returning to cinema screens across Nigeria for a special, limited theatrical re-release.

This return is timed perfectly. By bringing the movie back to theaters in June, the filmmakers are creating a powerful space for reflection just as the country approaches June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day. It gives audiences a unique opportunity to sit in a dark room with fellow citizens and experience a story that mirrors our shared history, our struggles, and our resilience.

To make the re-release even more exciting, the organizers have promised a curated campaign that includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, historical archives, and special merchandise drops for dedicated fans. It is being treated not just as a movie screening, but as a celebratory homecoming for a film that went out and conquered the global stage.

Don’t Miss the Cinematic Event of the Year
The message from the filmmakers is clear: some stories are simply meant to be experienced on the giant silver screen, where the sound can surround you and the pictures can truly come alive. My Father’s Shadow has proven itself to be a landmark achievement for modern Nollywood, showing the world that Nigerian cinema can deliver world-class technical execution alongside deeply rooted local stories.

If you missed the initial run of this award-winning masterpiece, your golden opportunity has finally arrived. Clear your schedules for this June, gather your friends and family, and head to the nearest cinema. The undisputed heavyweight of the season is coming back home, and it is an experience you definitely do not want to miss.
