• Nigel Farage’s Resignation : Political Money, Broken Rules and the Africa Diaspora Question

Nigel Farage’s resignation as MP for Clacton has turned a parliamentary standards controversy into a wider test of political money, democratic accountability and migration politics. With major parties refusing to contest the by-election, the episode raises urgent questions about whether electoral theatre can be used to weaken parliamentary scrutiny — and what that means for African diasporas in Britain, Ireland and at home....

  • Teaching Al-Musannaf Requires Rare Scholarly Expertise Beyond the Reach of Many Nigerian Scholars

Renowned Islamic scholar and founder of Darul Hadith Salafiyya, Zaria, Sheikh Muhammad Auwal Adam (Albani Zaria), has stated that teaching Kitabul Al-Musannaf requires an exceptional level of scholarly competence that, according to him, many Nigerian Islamic scholars do not possess.

The late cleric made the remarks during one of his Sahih al-Bukhari lectures in 2013, while discussing contemporary religious issues and the qualifications required to teach classical Islamic texts.

According to Sheikh Albani, Al-Musannaf is among the most comprehensive works in Islamic scholarship and demands mastery of several disciplines before a scholar can competently teach its contents.

"Teaching Kitabul Al-Musannaf requires rare scholarly expertise beyond what many Nigerian scholars possess," he said.

He explained that a scholar seeking to teach the book must possess extensive knowledge of Islamic jurisprudence (Fiqh), Hadith sciences (Mustalah al-Hadith), Islamic history (Tarikh), principles of narration, and other related Islamic sciences.

Albani argued that beyond academic qualifications, teaching the text requires years of specialization, extensive research, and a deep understanding of the differences among classical scholars and schools of thought.

According to him, many scholars lack the time, specialization, and depth of knowledge necessary to undertake such a demanding scholarly responsibility.

The respected scholar maintained that teaching advanced Islamic texts without the required expertise could lead to misunderstanding, inaccurate interpretations, and confusion among students of knowledge.

The mid-year cinematic rush in Nigeria has officially begun. Consequently, the local box office experiences a massive wave of excitement.

A Unique Human Narrative
Producers frequently offer flashy, high-budget comedies to theater audiences. Alternatively, studios release high-stakes action thrillers. However, a deeply grounding human story now captures the hearts of moviegoers.

The Arrival of Alechenu
The new film Alechenu officially hit major nationwide theaters on Friday, July 3, 2026. Therefore, this project stands out as the definitive theatrical event of the summer season.

Critical Acclaim and Audience Reaction
The prolific filmmaker Biodun Stephen directed this highly anticipated movie. Immediately, the film triggered a massive wave of positive reviews. Furthermore, eager crowds packed local cinema halls. The movie also sparked intense debates across online platforms.

More Than a Road Trip
A powerhouse ensemble cast stars in this emotional film. Specifically, the project features Bimbo Ademoye, Mike Ezuruonye, and Femi Adebayo.

Thus, Alechenu delivers much more than a typical road trip drama. Instead, the director explores maternal longing. She also highlights the harsh realities of urban migration. Additionally, she reveals the devastating weight of long-buried family secrets.

The Heart of the Story
A moving, character-driven narrative forms the absolute center of Alechenu. Indeed, this specific story feels deeply rooted in Southwestern Nigeria. Yet, the emotional appeal remains entirely universal for global viewers.

From Oyo to the Metropolis
The plot follows a young, fiercely determined boy named Alechenu. The young boy grows up in a quiet, traditional village within Oyo State.

Therefore, a deep sense of displacement grounds the young protagonist. Fragmented childhood memories also fuel his internal fire. Consequently, the young boy sets off on an intense, unauthorized journey. He travels directly to the sprawling, chaotic metropolis of Lagos.

A Singular Mission
Alechenu pursues a single, unwavering mission. He must find his long-lost mother. Mysteriously, she disappeared over a decade prior.

The Urban Puzzle
However, the boy faces sharp, unforgiving contrasts during his travels. He leaves the serene rustic landscapes of Oyo behind. Then, he encounters the overwhelming, fast-paced grit of the Lagos mainland.

Therefore, his simple quest for a joyful family reunion quickly changes. The journey morphs into a complex psychological puzzle.

Unearthing the Truth
Indeed, the young boy does not find straightforward answers in the city. Instead, his arrival triggers a massive domino effect. This crisis forces distant relatives and old acquaintances out of the shadows.

Furthermore, Alechenu pieces together his mother’s mysterious past. Inadvertently, he unearths a dark web of deeply buried family secrets. He also discovers financial betrayals and systemic sacrifices.

Ultimately, these shocking revelations threaten his understanding of identity, lineage, and home.

Biodun Stephen’s Creative Direction
The brilliant direction of Biodun Stephen elevates Alechenu into an elite piece of cinematic art. Thus, the project transcends a standard melodramatic script.

The Master of Emotional Realism

The African film industry knows Stephen as a master of emotional realism. Previously, she directed beloved, deeply moving hits like Breaded Life and Sista. She also created the popular film Hotel Labamba.

Human Interaction Over Gimmicks

Additionally, Stephen brings her signature warmth and meticulous pacing to this project. She also injects profound empathy into every scene. For instance, she rejects cheap jump scares.

She also avoids overly stylized, unrealistic action set pieces. Instead, she lets the narrative breathe through authentic human interaction.

Framing the Visual Contrast

Consequently, her directorial choices emphasize a stark visual contrast. She highlights the differences between her two main settings. For this reason, she collaborated closely with the brilliant cinematographer Gideon Chu.

The Colors of Oyo and Lagos
Chu frames Oyo with warm, golden tones and sprawling landscapes. Thus, he creates a profound sense of ancestral stillness. In sharp contrast, he introduces Lagos through cool, chaotic, blue-and-gray hues.

He uses tight close-ups and handheld camera movements. Therefore, these choices instantly make the audience feel the claustrophobia of the city. Viewers also experience the constant danger and relentless energy of the streets.

Honoring Human Resilience
Furthermore, Stephen possesses a unique ability to find profound beauty in everyday Nigerian struggles. Consequently, the film never feels exploitative. Instead, the director intentionally honors the resilience of her characters.

A Powerhouse Ensemble Cast
The star-studded, cross-generational cast carries the heavy emotional weight of Alechenu flawlessly. Today, each lead actor delivers a career-defining performance. Indeed, these stellar performances are already generating early award-season buzz.

Bimbo Ademoye’s Emotional Range
Frequent collaborator Bimbo Ademoye delivers the most mature performance of her career. Specifically, she steps completely away from her popular comedic typecasts.

Instead, Ademoye plays a pivotal, deeply conflicted figure. This character ties directly to the dark past of Alechenu’s mother.

Nuance and Subtle Acting

Furthermore, incredible nuance anchors her brilliant performance. She conveys immense grief, guilt, and protective love. Amazingly, she uses only her eyes and subtle shifts in body language.

The Triumphant Return of Mike Ezuruonye
Additionally, veteran actor Mike Ezuruonye makes a brilliant, highly celebrated return to the big screen. He beautifully embodies a complex, Lagos-based relative. Externally, this character maintains a tough, cynical exterior.

However, this mask hides deep emotional scars. Therefore, Ezuruonye’s commanding screen presence provides a fantastic anchor for the film’s tense second act.

Femi Adebayo’s Indigenous Presence

Meanwhile, Femi Adebayo adds incredible gravity to the Oyo-based segments of the film. He recently completed historic runs in epic indigenous cinema.

Now, Adebayo infuses this project with a rich, authentic cultural weight. He masterfully portrays a traditional patriarch. This man holds the key to the family’s original fracturing.

On-Screen Chemistry
Ultimately, the chemistry between these distinct acting powerhouses creates an electric dynamic on screen. Consequently, every single confrontation feels completely earned. Each quiet conversation and emotional breakdown also feels devastatingly real to the audience.

A Triumph for Modern Nollywood
Ultimately, Alechenu represents a major triumph for contemporary Nollywood cinema. Therefore, the movie serves as a refreshing, powerful reminder for filmmakers.

Rejecting Hollywood Formulas

Indeed, Nigerian filmmaking does not need to mimic Western blockbuster formulas. Local stories can remain deeply captivating on their own terms.

Grounded in Authenticity

Thus, Stephen grounds her narrative in authentic Nigerian geography and language. She also focuses heavily on real family dynamics. Through these elements, the film achieves a rare level of emotional truth.

Box Office Longevity
Currently, the movie continues its successful opening weekend run across several key cities. Crowds are flocking to cinemas in Lagos, Abuja, and Ibadan.

Therefore, the film remains firmly positioned to dominate the box office charts. It will also control the cultural conversation for weeks to come.

A Timeless Masterpiece
In conclusion, Biodun Stephen has once again delivered a timeless masterpiece. This profound film will make you cry. Furthermore, the story will make you think deeply.

Ultimately, the movie will make you want to call your family immediately. For this reason, you must watch Alechenu if you head to the theaters this weekend.
