Amorim: Injured Fernandes irreplaceable as he recounts United’s great loss from captain’s absence
Amid Bruno Fernandes’s recent injury, Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim says it is so impossible to replace the influential and committed captain.
Fernandes, who has been an integral part of Amorim’s rejuvenated Manchester United team, is out and set to miss weeks of action.
During his recent pre-match conference, Amorim said: “It’s impossible to replace Bruno.” A statement which truly defines the importance of the Manchester United’s Portuguese midfielder.
“But I said that this morning to the team, we need to take the good thing, if there is a good thing on that, and a lot of people need to step up.
“It’s not just the creation. On every set-piece, he is the guy organising the team and that is a good opportunity for everyone to step up and realise we can’t rely on one player for everything.
Ruben Amorim and the entire Manchester United backroom staff know how relevant Fernandes’ presence is on the pitch and believe his injury will have adverse effects on the rhythm and success of the team following his soft tissue injury sustained last weekend.
“Sometimes we rely on Bruno for the organisation and creation. We lost Bruno, Bryan [Mbeumo] and Amad in set pieces so this is massive for the team.
“This is a good chance for Lucha [Lisandro Martinez], Luke Shaw, all of these guys to step up and have more leaders in the group.”
If Kobbie Maino is fit enough and ready to convince Amorim, this is the perfect time for him as the coach might be forced to look inward for a short-term replacement.
Continuing to provide update ahead of their Boxing Day fixture on who might be called on to stand in for injured Fernandes in the Manchester United’s midfield, Amorim added: “We have other players. We maybe need to see different ways of playing.
“I think Jack Fletcher did a very good job [against Aston Villa] and that’s why when we have this opportunity, we need to give space to guys like Jack and others. We will find solutions to play.
“I am confident we can win any game. We have some problems, but I believe in the team, even without many players in this moment. It is more difficult, but I trust in my players. If we are really focused in the game, we can win.”
In an interview a few days ago, Bruno Fernandes revealed that he was left devastated and hurt when he discovered that Manchester United was looking to cash-in on him during the summer.
Amorim describing Bruno Fernandes as “irreplaceable” has come after less than a week the midfielder revealed his feeling about United’s bosses wanting to sell him in the summer, but could not garner the audacity to go against the coach’s wish.
The United captain, who could have joined Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal for £100m, said he was “hurt” and “sad” about how the situation had been handled in an interview with Portuguese TV station Canal 11.
Many media outlets, including Sky Sports, understand that the Manchester United’s team leadership was ambiguous with Fernandes throughout the ongoing campaign─and remain adamant─that their influential captain is part and parcel of their plans going into the future and they are with no intention of selling him.

In an exclusive pre-match interview ahead of United’s Boxing Day tie against Newcastle United, Ruben Amorim claims that he is a ‘different’ and ‘better’ manager then he was when he arrived United one year ago.
The Manchester United head coach adds the he was ready to do so many hings differently too, and revealed that he has learned so much since joining the club last year.
He said: “I would love to go back to the last year. We suffer a lot in this moment and I would do things so differently.
“I learned more this year than the other five as a manager. I will do so many things in a different way, not just in everything but also on the pitch, the way we play the game.
“No matter what happens in the future, I learned so much and I’m a different manager.
“It’s hard to pinpoint one thing, but to take all the value of the squad that I had last year, maybe it was not the right choices all the time. I watched the games from last season to understand different things.
“I’m a different manager today. I will do maybe 75 per cent of the things different, but the key things, the red lines would be the same. I think I’m a better manager now.”
Manchester United head into their Boxing Day fixture against Newcastle United tomorrow, hoping Bruno Fernandes’ absence will not take any toll on the team’s performance.
Every club in the English Premier League surely knows that it is not a good time to lose any of their star players as, during the Christmas’ period, there is a load of congested fixtures to be played.
So, Fernandes not available for selection with Amorim, spells a tough time ahead, and we can easily understand why Amorim has described Fernandes as ‘irreplaceable.’
As Ruben Amorim has suggested, utilising Jack Fletcher, the youngster who impressed against Aston Villa, might just be a high score on the card as there are no better players to stand in for captain Bruno Fernandes; Kobbie Maino can be used too.
