Lagos —

Four students from Sunflower School in Kano State have attracted national attention after developing a digital platform designed to address some of the challenges faced by Nigerian farmers. Their team, Agrolens Technologies, won the 2026 National Company of the Year Competition organised by Junior Achievement Nigeria (JAN).

The students developed AgroLens AI, a mobile platform that brings several agricultural services together. These include crop disease and pest detection, treatment recommendations, market price information, connections to buyers and information about agricultural financing.

The team received a $250 cash prize and an all-expenses-paid trip to Cape Town, South Africa, where it will represent Nigeria at the African Company of the Year Competition.

Beyond the award, the students’ achievement highlights how young people can use technology to explore solutions to problems affecting their communities. It also raises an important question about how digital tools can become useful and affordable for farmers who need reliable agricultural information.

How Four Students Developed the Idea

The winning team comprises Fadillah Abdulsalam, Ruqayya Jallo, Hayfa Mukhtar and Maryam Butu.

Their company, Agrolens Technologies, presented AgroLens AI as a free mobile platform designed to help farmers make better agricultural decisions.

The team emerged as the winner at the national competition, whose results were announced on October 21, 2026.

The competition gives young people an opportunity to develop business ideas, present products and demonstrate their understanding of entrepreneurship. It also encourages students to consider how innovation can create opportunities beyond the classroom.

AgroLens AI stood out because its focus was on agriculture, a sector that supports farmers, traders, food processors and other businesses across Nigeria.

The platform brings several services into one place rather than requiring farmers to seek different sources for every type of information.

Its features are designed to help users recognise crop problems, obtain treatment guidance, compare market prices and find potential buyers.

The students also received the Product Innovation and Operational Excellence Award, presented by Food Concepts.

Their victory will take the team beyond the national competition, giving them an opportunity to present their innovation at the African contest in South Africa.

However, winning a competition is only the beginning. The platform’s long-term value will depend on whether it can provide accurate information and meet the practical needs of farmers.

Helping Farmers Identify Crop Problems

Crop diseases and pests can damage produce and reduce the amount farmers eventually harvest and sell.

When farmers cannot identify a problem early, they may lose valuable time trying to determine what is affecting their crops. Choosing the wrong treatment could also waste money or cause further problems.

AgroLens AI is designed to help users identify crop diseases and pests and access treatment recommendations.

If the technology works accurately in real farming conditions, it could help farmers recognise possible problems earlier and seek appropriate advice.

However, the platform should not be treated as a guaranteed replacement for agricultural experts. Its recommendations need to be reliable, and farmers may still require professional guidance when dealing with serious or unfamiliar crop diseases.

The usefulness of the feature will also depend on the crops it can recognise, the quality of the information provided and the conditions in which farmers use it.

For farming communities, the important question is whether the platform can help users make better decisions at the right time.

Independent testing and feedback from farmers could help establish how well the technology performs outside a competition setting.

Market Information Could Help Farmers Make Better Decisions

Finding buyers and negotiating prices can be difficult for farmers who have limited access to market information.

A farmer may spend money cultivating a crop only to discover that the available buyers are offering prices that barely cover production and transportation costs.

AgroLens AI includes market price information intended to help farmers understand prevailing prices and make more informed decisions.

The platform also aims to connect farmers with buyers.

Together, these features could help users compare available opportunities and identify potential customers before selling their produce.

For instance, a farmer who has access to reliable market information may be better prepared to assess an offer from a trader. A connection to additional buyers could also provide more options when deciding where to sell.

Nevertheless, market information is useful only when it is accurate and up to date. Prices can vary between locations, products and periods, while transportation costs may affect how much a farmer eventually earns.

Connecting farmers to buyers does not automatically guarantee a sale or a better price. The platform would need to provide dependable information and useful connections for the feature to deliver meaningful results.

Even so, bringing these services together could offer farmers another way to explore market opportunities.

Local Languages Could Make the Technology More Accessible

One notable feature of AgroLens AI is its support for English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Nigerian Pidgin.

The platform also includes voice-enabled features intended to assist users who have limited literacy or prefer speaking rather than typing.

This approach could make agricultural information easier to access for people who are less comfortable using applications that depend heavily on written instructions.

For example, a farmer who prefers Hausa could benefit from information presented in a familiar language. Voice features may also make it easier for users who struggle to type on mobile devices.

However, language support must be practical as well as available. Instructions need to be clear, and translations must preserve the meaning of agricultural advice.

Farmers must also be able to understand the information and apply it correctly.

Internet access, smartphone availability and the cost of mobile data may present additional barriers. Some potential users may need demonstrations or help before they can use the platform confidently.

Working with agricultural cooperatives and community groups could help introduce the technology to farmers and gather feedback about its performance.

Why the Students’ Achievement Matters

The Kano students’ victory demonstrates how practical learning can encourage young people to identify problems and develop possible solutions.

Junior Achievement Nigeria runs programmes that introduce students to entrepreneurship, business planning and other skills that may support their transition from school to further education or employment.

Through these activities, students gain opportunities to work in teams, develop ideas and present products or services.

AgroLens AI provides an example of how a school-based project can focus on a challenge beyond the classroom.

The students chose an area with direct links to food production, household income and local commerce. Their work also brings attention to the role young women can play in technology and entrepreneurship.

The competition recognised other student-led businesses as well. New Era Company from Community Secondary School, Asokoro, Abuja, placed second, while Nexora from International School Lagos came third.

The results show that the competition provides a platform for young entrepreneurs from different parts of Nigeria to present their ideas.

For the Kano team, the next opportunity is to represent the country at the African Company of the Year Competition in Cape Town.

Turning an Award-Winning Idea into a Useful Service

Although the students have received national recognition, the next stage will require more than publicity.

The team will need to ensure that the platform remains accessible, that its information is reliable and that its features respond to the needs of actual users.

Testing the disease-detection feature with agricultural specialists could help establish its accuracy. Feedback from farmers could also reveal whether the market information and buyer connections are useful in everyday business.

The team may need support from technology professionals, agricultural organisations and potential partners to improve the platform and explore its wider use.

It will also be important to understand how the service can remain available and useful over time, even though it is presented as free to farmers.

These questions do not reduce the importance of the students’ achievement. Instead, they point to the practical steps required to turn an innovative idea into a dependable service.

If the platform performs well, it could offer farmers another source of information to support their decisions. Its actual contribution, however, will need to be demonstrated through testing and use.

A Lesson for Communities and Schools

The Kano team’s achievement offers a useful example for schools seeking to make learning more practical.

Students can identify challenges in their surroundings and explore ways technology, research and teamwork might help address them.

Such projects can also encourage young people to consider entrepreneurship as a possible path alongside traditional employment.

For farming communities, AgroLens AI presents an idea worth examining because it focuses on information, market access and crop management.

Still, digital tools cannot solve every problem facing agriculture. Farmers also need access to land, suitable inputs, reliable transport, storage facilities and buyers willing to pay fair prices.

Technology can complement these needs, but it cannot replace the wider support required for a strong agricultural sector.

The students’ next challenge is to show how their platform works in practice and whether it can make a measurable difference to farmers.

For Kano State, their victory is an example of young people engaging with a major economic activity through innovation. For Nigeria, it highlights the importance of giving students opportunities to develop ideas that respond to real community needs.

Ultimately, the success of AgroLens AI will depend not only on the award it has won but also on whether farmers can use it confidently and benefit from the services it provides.
