Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved ₦87.435 million for the re-accreditation of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Teaching Hospital, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in Kano State.
The approval was announced in a statement on Friday,by Hajiya Samira Suleiman, Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Hospitals Management Board.
According to Suleiman, the funding reflects the administration’s commitment to revitalising the health sector and expanding access to quality care across the state.
She said the intervention would boost the hospital’s capacity in specialist training, maternal and child healthcare, and raise professional standards in obstetrics and gynaecology.

“The re-accreditation exercise will further strengthen the hospital’s role in producing highly trained medical professionals while enhancing services for and neighbouring states,” Suleiman said
She described the approval as part of Governor Yusuf’s broader healthcare reform agenda aimed at repositioning Kano as a centre of excellence in both healthcare delivery and medical education in Nigeria.

Kano Contributory Healthcare To Enrol 6,000 TB Patients
The Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency has announced plans to enrol no fewer than 6,000 tuberculosis patients into its vulnerable healthcare scheme as part of a renewed effort to improve access to treatment and reduce the burden of the disease across the state.
The Executive Secretary of KSCHMA, Dr. Rahila Mukhtar, made the disclosure on Tuesday during an advocacy visit by the Kano TB Network and the Society for Child Support and Economic Empowerment, led by its Coordinator, Sunusi Hashim.
“We have a plan to enrol 6,000 TB patients into our vulnerable healthcare scheme to improve access to treatment and reduce the spread of the disease in the state,” she said.
Mukhtar explained that the agency had already extended healthcare coverage to people living with HIV and would now include tuberculosis patients under the vulnerable group programme.
She described tuberculosis as a major public health challenge requiring urgent intervention and stronger collaboration among stakeholders to ensure patients receive adequate treatment and support.

” As we know, tuberculosis is one of the major health challenges needing urgent intervention and a strong collaboration among stakeholders,” she noted.
According to Rahila, enrolling TB patients into the health insurance scheme would reduce financial barriers to healthcare and improve access to diagnosis, medication, and other essential medical services.
The KSCHMA boss reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding inclusive healthcare programmes aimed at improving the well-being of vulnerable residents across Kano State.
In his remarks, Hashim commended KSCHMA for the initiative, describing the planned enrollment as a significant step toward strengthening the fight against tuberculosis and easing the burden on affected patients, particularly low-income families.

He also called for sustained collaboration among government agencies, development partners, and civil society groups to combat tuberculosis and other infectious diseases in Kano State and the country at large.
Based on 2026 reports, Kano State is one of the highest TB-burdened states in Nigeria, with an estimated 33,961 cases documented within the year.
Nigeria has recorded 440,000 tuberculosis (TB) cases in 2025, but health authorities warn that thousands of infections remain undiagnosed, posing a continued public health threat.
This was revealed by the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Iziaq Salako, during a ministerial press briefing to mark the 2026 World TB Day in Abuja.

The event also featured the launch of the Multisectoral Accountability Framework for TB (MAF-TB), designed to track commitments and improve coordination across all levels of government.
Mr Salako said TB case notifications rose significantly from 138,591 in 2020 to 440,000 in 2025.
He attributed the increase to strategic expansion of diagnostic networks, especially the GeneXpert network, which increased from 32 machines in 2012 to 527 in 2026, and TB-TrueNAT capacity, which grew from 39 units in 2013 to 372 units.
He added that treatment success rates remain high at 94 per cent, reflecting the dedication of healthcare workers and the efficacy of TB medicines.

Despite these gains, he warned that a significant number of TB cases are still missed.
“While we have expanded access and improved diagnostic capacity, undetected cases remain a serious concern. Innovation, expanded access, and sustained domestic financing are critical to reaching these populations,” he said
The minister also emphasised that continued success requires strong domestic financing and accountability.
He highlighted the federal government’s commitment, in collaboration with states and local governments, to co-finance strategic health investments, including TB, HIV, and malaria.

“Through sector-wide programmes and coordinated resource use, we can stretch limited resources effectively to achieve results.
Accountability and timely release of funds are essential to ensure commodities and services reach those who need them,” he said
He said the launch of the MAF-TB will allow real-time tracking of commitments, ensuring all stakeholders, including government agencies and communities, are aligned in delivering results.
