The Nigerian Bar Association, Ibadan branch, on Monday, charged the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, to take a keen interest in the ceaseless influx of people into the state amid the recent abduction of teachers and students in Oriire Local Government Area of the state.
NBA, in a statement on Monday, said, “This barbarism must not be allowed to have a foothold in an erstwhile peaceful environment. We must not allow this latest incident to be added to the consistently growing list of unresolved horrendous crimes perpetrated against the hapless people of this country”the statement reads
The association further called on both the Federal and State Governments to put more effort into rescuing abducted teachers and students at three different schools in the local governments.
” The perpetrators of this attack and their sponsors must be unmasked. The government at different levels must act in earnest to confront this menace. The state must rise above characteristic but ineffectual reactions to grave acts of barbarism which assail our sensibilities”the statement added

A week ago,terrorists armed with guns stormed three schools in Oriire Local Government Area,Oyo State,abducting an unspecified number of students and teachers.
Residents described the attack as one of the most daring assaults on school communities in recent times, with gunmen reportedly operating in broad daylight and moving freely between locations without resistance.
The incident had thrown the community into fear and confusion, with parents, teachers, and residents in distress as security operatives launched a manhunt for the kidnappers.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the hoodlums stormed the communities around 9am, after the pupils gathered for morning assembly and normal school activities.

According to eye witnesses the assailants arrived on motorcycles and shot sporadically as they entered the school premises and nearby areas.
Speaking on the incident, Governor Seyi Makinde on Monday confirmed that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while 18 children and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School, adding that one person was killed during the attack.
“Now we can confirm conclusively that at the Community Secondary School, about seven students were abducted, while at the First Baptist Primary and Nursery School, 18 children were abducted, and about seven teachers were also involved. Unfortunately, like I reported yesterday, one of them was killed”Gov Makinde said
He further noted that the government is ready to listen to the abductors and address their needs to ensure the swift release of the children and their teacher.

“If you see something strange, say something, and expect us to do something. We will not give in to terror. We will do everything possible to ensure that our children and their teachers return safely” he stated

The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Gani Adams, has accused South-West governors of failing to address repeated calls and proposals on regional security despite growing threats of kidnapping and banditry across the region.
Adams made the remarks on Tuesday while reacting to the recent attack on schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, where gunmen abducted pupils, students and teachers.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Tuesday,the Yoruba leader described the incident as tragic and a signal that the South-West could no longer treat insecurity lackadaisically.
“What happened in Oriire Local Government Area in Oyo State a few days ago is very sad and highly condemnable,” he said

According to him, although cases of kidnapping had been recorded in parts of the region, the latest mass abduction showed that criminal groups were becoming more daring in the South-West.
“We have had a series of kidnappings in different states, but we have not witnessed mass kidnapping in Yorubaland, and that shows that the Yoruba race in the South-West must prepare for this issue of insecurity,” he said
The Aare Ona Kakanfo said he had consistently alerted authorities about the activities of criminal elements operating within the region, stressing that some states had already been infiltrated by terrorist elements.
“Precisely, in November last year, I mentioned four states that these criminals had infiltrated. I mentioned Ondo State, Ekiti State, Osun State, and Oyo State,” he added

Adams also disclosed that he had formally written to South-West governors, urging closer collaboration with traditional and socio-cultural groups to strengthen the region’s security architecture, but claimed his calls were ignored.
” I had written to the South-West governors that there is a need for collaboration on the issue of security; all hands must be on deck on these issues. But for the past two years, they have not replied to me,” he said.
He explained that beyond the Oodua People’s Congress, other Yoruba organisations were willing to work with governments to tackle insecurity across the region.

The traditional ruler of the community, the Eleshi Ele of Esiele, Oba Tajudeen Abioye, confirmed that the terrorists arrived on eight motorcycles, each carrying two armed men.
He said the attack occurred while a town meeting was ongoing.
“We were having a town hall meeting when we suddenly heard gunshots. People started running in all directions. Later, we discovered they had attacked the schools, killed a teacher and abducted pupils and the principal,” he said
The monarch lamented how kindergarten pupils were not spared in the attack.

“They did not spare anyone. They abducted pupils from both primary and secondary schools, including very small children. We cannot even confirm the number yet,” he said
