• Tinubu Campaign Team Donates ₦600 Million to JIBWIS National Headquarters for Fortune University Project The campaign team of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has donated ₦600 million to the National Headquarters of the Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa’iqamatis Sunnah (JIBWIS) in Jos to support the development of Fortune University, a university project being undertaken by the organisation. The donation was announced during the JIBWIS National Meeting held in Jos on Sunday, where prominent political leaders and other senior personalities were in attendance. Among those present at the gathering was Senator Barau I. Jibrin, Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate, alongside the governors of Kano, Jigawa and Kebbi states, as well as other senior government officials and dignitaries. The financial support is intended to contribute to the development of the university project at the JIBWIS National Headquarters in Jos, which the organisation has identified as part of its efforts to expand educational opportunities. The presentation formed part of the activities surrounding the national meeting, which brought together JIBWIS leadership, scholars, political figures and other stakeholders. The donation also highlights the growing engagement between political actors and religious organisations in supporting educational and community-development initiatives. Fortune University, being developed under the auspices of JIBWIS, is expected to become an important educational institution in Jos upon completion. #Jibwis #Sheikhjingir #Izala #Jibwisnationalheadquarters

abuja —

For decades, the standard advice for weight management was simple, if deeply flawed: eat less, move more, and rely on willpower. But a massive shift is happening in the health world, driven by a class of medications known as GLP-1 receptor agonists. Drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro, which were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, have exploded in popularity for their weight loss benefits.

However, the real story is no longer just about losing weight. What we are witnessing today is a profound ripple effect. These medications are fundamentally changing how scientists view human metabolism, rewriting our psychological relationship with eating, and shifting entire industries from surgical medicine to daily nutrition.

What Is a GLP-1 and How Does It Work?
To understand why these drugs are causing such a stir, it helps to understand what GLP-1 actually is. GLP-1 stands for Glucagon-Like Peptide-1, which is a naturally occurring hormone your gut releases after you eat.

In simple terms, GLP-1 tells your body that food has arrived. It does this by triggering three main actions:

Insulin Production
It tells your pancreas to release insulin, which helps lower and stabilize your blood sugar levels.

Slowing the Stomach
It slows down the rate at which your stomach empties food into your small intestine. This physical delay keeps you feeling physically full for a much longer period.

Brain Communication
It signals the reward centers of your brain, letting you know that you are satisfied and no longer need to seek out food.

Synthetic GLP-1 medications essentially mimic this natural hormone, but they stay in the body much longer than the version our guts produce naturally, amplifying these biological signals.

Silencing the Mind; The Phenomenon of “Food Noise”
Perhaps the most groundbreaking discovery to emerge from the widespread use of GLP-1 drugs is their effect on what psychologists and patients call “food noise.”

Before these medications went mainstream, many people assumed that constant cravings were simply a failure of discipline. Food noise describes the relentless, intrusive thoughts about eating that happen throughout the day. For someone experiencing high food noise, a box of donuts in the office breakroom isn’t just a snack option; it is a constant mental distraction until it is consumed. Your brain is essentially shouting at you that you are hungry, even when your stomach is full.

GLP-1 medications act like a mute button for this mental chatter. By interacting with the brain’s reward pathways, the drugs turn down the volume on these constant cravings. For the first time, many individuals are experiencing what it feels like to simply be indifferent to food when they aren’t physically hungry. This revelation has shifted the public conversation: obesity is increasingly recognized not as a moral failing or a lack of willpower, but as a complex biological condition deeply rooted in brain chemistry.

Health Benefits Far Beyond the Scale
While the visible changes on the scale get the most media attention, medical researchers are far more excited about the underlying health improvements these medications offer. New clinical studies are revealing that the benefits of GLP-1s extend deep into cardiovascular and cellular health.

Lowering Blood Pressure and Heart Risks
Weight loss naturally reduces strain on the cardiovascular system, but GLP-1 drugs appear to protect the heart directly. Recent clinical trials have shown that these medications significantly lower blood pressure and reduce the overall risk of major adverse cardiac events, such as heart attacks and strokes. The medication helps reduce systemic inflammation and improves how blood vessels function, offering a protective shield for the cardiovascular system.

A New Frontier in Cancer Research
One of the most encouraging and surprising areas of new research involves oncology, specifically breast cancer. Recent studies suggest that GLP-1 medications may play a role in reducing the risk of breast cancer recurrence. While researchers are still working to understand the exact mechanisms, the current theory points to the drug’s ability to dramatically lower chronic inflammation and regulate insulin levels both of which are key factors that can fuel cancer cell growth.

The Upstream Shift: Changing the Medical Landscape
The rapid adoption of GLP-1s is causing a major realignment across the entire healthcare system, most notably in the field of metabolic surgery.
For years, bariatric surgeries such as gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy were considered the gold standard for individuals dealing with severe clinical obesity and related metabolic diseases. Today, hospitals and surgical centers are reporting a noticeable and steady decline in the demand for these invasive procedures. Given the choice between undergoing a major, life-altering surgical operation or taking a manageable, regular medication, a vast majority of patients are choosing the pharmaceutical route. This shift is freeing up surgical resources and providing patients with a non-invasive alternative to regain control of their health.

The Companion Market: Muscle Preservation and Nutrition
As millions of people reduce their caloric intake on GLP-1 medications, a brand-new challenge has emerged, sparking a massive boom in a secondary wellness industry.
When you lose weight rapidly by eating significantly less, your body doesn’t just burn fat it also breaks down skeletal muscle mass for energy. Losing too much muscle mass slows down your metabolism, causes fatigue, and reduces physical strength, which is especially dangerous for older adults. Furthermore, because individuals on these medications eat much smaller portions, they run the risk of developing severe nutrient deficiencies if they aren’t careful about what they consume.

This reality has birthed a massive “companion market” focused entirely on supporting people using GLP-1s:

The Rise of Protein-Dense Foods: There is a surge in demand for high-quality protein powders, shakes, and bars specifically formulated to help individuals maintain their muscle mass while consuming fewer calories.

Targeted Supplementation: Micronutrient supplements, specialized multivitamins, and hydration formulas are being designed specifically to counteract the unique nutritional gaps caused by a suppressed appetite.

Strength Training Rebirth:
Fitness spaces are pivoting their messaging away from extreme cardio for calorie-burning and moving toward resistance training and strength building to ensure that the weight being lost is fat, not vital muscle.

A Healthier Path Forward
The rise of GLP-1 medications represents far more than a passing fitness trend or a quick-fix diet craze. It marks a foundational evolution in how we view human biology, appetite, and chronic disease prevention. By silencing the exhausting mental drain of food noise and offering direct benefits to heart and cellular health, these treatments are giving millions of people the tools to live healthier, longer lives.

As the companion markets for muscle preservation and targeted nutrition continue to grow, the approach to wellness is becoming more holistic. We are moving away from a culture of shame and restriction and moving toward a future built on biological understanding, balanced nutrition, and sustainable health management.
