The Army Chief commended personnel for their loyalty, discipline and commitment to duty, attributing recent operational gains to their professionalism and the synergy between the military and other stakeholders in the security sector.

The Nigerian Army has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to defending the nation’s sovereignty and protecting citizens, as it marked its 163rd anniversary with a renewed pledge to intensify operations against insecurity across the country.
The service formally signalled the commencement of activities lined up for the anniversary.
Represented by Major General Maxwell Dangana, the Army Chief described the occasion as a moment for reflection, gratitude, and recommitment to national service, noting that the Army’s long history has been defined by sacrifice, resilience and patriotism.
“Today provides us with an opportunity to thank God for His mercies, reflect on our journey, celebrate our accomplishments, honour our heroes and renew our commitment to the defence of our dear nation,” Shaibu stated.
He emphasised that the anniversary also serves as a platform to recognise the dedication of officers and soldiers who continue to operate in challenging environments across various theatres of operation nationwide.
“The theme is a clarion call for introspection, renewal and rededication. It reminds us that our primary constitutional mandate is deeply intertwined with the safety, prosperity and trust of the Nigerian citizens we have sworn to protect,” he said.
Shaibu noted that troops remain actively engaged in operations against terrorism, insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other criminal activities threatening national stability.
Despite the multifaceted nature of these security threats, he said the Army had recorded significant successes across different operational theatres through sustained efforts and collaboration with other security agencies.
“Through the dedication, courage and professionalism of our officers and soldiers, several criminal elements have been neutralised, terrorist enclaves dismantled, hostages rescued and normalcy restored to communities,” he added.
He reiterated that his command philosophy remains focused on building a more professional, adaptable and combat-ready force capable of responding effectively to emerging threats.
“Our personnel remain the Nigerian Army’s most valuable asset. Accordingly, we have continued to prioritise troop welfare by improving accommodation, healthcare services, training opportunities, educational support and other welfare initiatives,” Shaibu said.
He further disclosed that the Army had witnessed increased recruitment following directives from Bola Tinubu aimed at strengthening the nation’s security architecture.
Shaibu assured that newly recruited personnel would undergo rigorous training and professional development to equip them with the skills required for modern warfare and internal security operations.
He also paid tribute to fallen officers and soldiers, describing their sacrifices as the foundation of the Army’s legacy and a source of inspiration for serving personnel.
“We must never forget the gallant officers and soldiers who paid the supreme sacrifice in defence of our nation. Their courage, patriotism and selfless service remain a source of inspiration to us all,” he said.
The Army Chief also acknowledged the contributions of wounded personnel, veterans and military families, noting that their support plays a crucial role in sustaining operational success.
He expressed appreciation to the President and the Federal Government for their continued support, stating that recent achievements in the fight against insecurity would not have been possible without such backing.
“The successes recorded by the Nigerian Army in recent times would not have been possible without the continued support of the President and the Federal Government,” he said.
Shaibu urged Nigerians to continue supporting the Armed Forces and to pray for peace, unity and stability in the country, reaffirming the Army’s commitment to its core values of loyalty, discipline, integrity, selfless service and professionalism.
He urged officers and soldiers to uphold the dignity of all Nigerians, stressing that protecting innocent citizens is not only a constitutional responsibility but also a moral and spiritual duty.
Maimagani encouraged troops to remain steadfast and resilient in the face of ongoing security challenges, urging them to demonstrate courage, humility, integrity and compassion in the discharge of their duties.
He also offered prayers for divine protection over the Armed Forces and the nation, expressing hope for lasting peace and unity across Nigeria.
Meanwhile, similar activities were held across military formations nationwide as part of the anniversary celebrations.
The event brought together military personnel, their families and invited guests in thanksgiving and prayers for the country and its Armed Forces.
Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Chief of Army Staff, the General Officer Commanding 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Operation Fansan Yamma, Major General Bemgba Paul Koughna, said the anniversary offered an opportunity to reflect on the Army’s achievements and honour personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice.
He commended officers and soldiers of the division for their resilience and dedication in safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity despite persistent security challenges.
Special prayers were also offered for the President, national leaders, the Armed Forces and troops deployed in various operational theatres.
